Brenda – “Children” Music Video
Here’s a really cool video from one of the top bands bursting from Toronto’s thriving garage/pysch scene. Brenda has released a new single from their upcoming EP “Creeeper”. “Children” sneaks along with a creepy pace and the video falls right in line with that ambience. They smoothly transition from dark clown quiet riffage to a frenetic blend of fuzz, verb and more fuzz. You should watch this video alone late at night while playing Resident Evil on Playstation 1. Brenda plays Friday (October 20) at The Monarch Tavern with Crazy Bones and Pink Acid Wash. – Kris Gies

New Borzoi Boy EP Available for Streaming & Download
Philly singer-songwriter Alexandra Gordon is now recording under the moniker Borzoi Boy ("like the Russian greyhound"). Enter The Light captures a certain hushed, candlelit, emotive intimacy. Letting the listener in on the thoughts that are encased in one’s mind, Gordon figures out her next move, while reminiscing on love and feelings of loneliness. The duality of brightness and bleakness grips as the sun trickles in through the curtains.
New Track: “Point of Personal Privilege” – Weller
“Point of Personal Privilege” serves as the second single off Weller’s full-length debut, due out on October 20. Gradually illustrating a poignant heart-wrenching tale, that optimistic imagery is torn to pieces by the harshness of reality. Somber self-evaluations, accentuated by the warm build of backing harmonies, come crashing, battered by swells of tension-releasing instrumentation. On Saturday, November 4, JJ’s Diner will be hosting the band’s record release show, with Three Man Cannon and Allegra rounding out the lineup.
The Nuclears to shake up Sunnyvale 10/21
The Nuclears might sound like a some unearthed garage-y gold from your latest crate digging escapades, but the five-piece have only been tearing up the NYC-scene for not even a decade. The band plays raw rock ‘n’ roll the way your daddy used to like, with all the electricity of old-school punk acts, and they even dabble in dirty rock-a-billy for the discerning rock purist. Check them out live at Sunnyvale 10/21 and be sure to check out their music below. – Olivia Sisinni
TAYLS bringing psych pop fun to The East Room for Halloween (10.27)
Taylor Cole, formerly of Nashville’s Chalaxy and Creature Comfort, is back with a new psych pop outfit, TAYLS. Their first single “Pop Tart (Queer Boy/Small Town)” was released earlier this year, highlighting Cole’s soaring, Beck-like vocals over a grooving and swaying pop track bringing to mind the likes of Grouplove. “I want to change the way Nashville views music and art,” Cole states. “I want to make you forget about your real life, make you feel like you’re back on the playground.” If what is to follow carries the same sense of carefree joy as their first offering, TAYLS are going to be a welcome change to Nashville’s already diverse scene. Make sure to catch them playing a Halloween party at The East Room October 27th at 9 PM along with Spaceface, The Subnovas, and TWEN! – Chris Thiessen
Outer Rooms – New Album, Release Party Saturday!
Blackwood Row Releases ‘Werewolf’ EP
The 7-piece Americana band, Blackwood Row, was formed nearly two years ago by ambitious songwriter and vocalist Raquelle Blackwood shortly after starting her first semester in college. From early on it was clear that the band would be destined to achieve significant recognition in the Americana/Folk community; a premonition that seems even more achievable with the release of the band’s debut EP, “Werewolf.” The project combines insightful songwriting with lush instrumentation, where story-like verses seamlessly transition into howling choruses. From the opening track, “Broken Bone” to the consoling closer, “Little Time,” the project masterfully captures a contrast of perspectives on sensitive experiences and self-reflection.
Go listen for yourself on Apple Music or Spotify, and be sure to catch Blackwood Row’s next show here in Nashville, November 11, live at the Black Lodge!
Mellow psych poppers Plates of Cake release new LP 10/19 at Berlin
Brooklyn-based Plates of Cake serves up sweet, creamy psych pop that manages to be trippy without ever being jarring. With a sound that’s reminiscent of a more Beach Boys-y Syd Barrett, the easy listening aspects of Plates of Cake’s songs are matched by their layers of sonic experimentation. Their new release, "Let’s Not Deprive Each Other" is no exception; the album is surprisingly moody, somewhat cynical, and most interestingly, seems to defy simple time-period classification. Strong melody writing, undeniable hooks, and great instrumentation are all on display here, so make sure you catch them live at Berlin 10/19. – Olivia Sisinni
