New Jonny Clousson EP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Singer-songwriter Jonny Clousson recently shared a new EP, which he has titled Trouble Comes. There’s an earnest exuberance at play. The songs have an exposed, get-up-and-go vulnerability. The capacity to express issues and insecurities with an universal, upbeat energy makes the album surprisingly endearing, with a positive, pop-punk feel.

Blood Cultures premiere horrifically enchanting new song + video

Posted on:

It’s hard to imagine “Dunk On Me” without the video, or the video without the song. The pairing, directed by Idle House and Blood Cultures, is outstanding. Drawn in by film grain and a wash of hazy synths and distant vocals, “Dunk On Me” abruptly rushes into a suffocating rush of clanging electronics and gothic imagery as school-age lovesickness develops into horror movie plotline in just over three-and-a-half minutes. The disjointed, experimental approach Blood Cultures takes on the track should reel you in, but with the video it’s an act that’s difficult to turn away from. Watch below. – Cameron Carr

New Track: “Little Norma” – Beach Bod

Posted on:

The duo of Rachel Wild & Nathan Avila, a.k.a. Beach Bod, have returned with a new single. “Little Norma” navigates the melancholy waters of a breakup/separation. The pair share vocal duties, creating a mellow mirroring perspective. Gradually floating apart, aided by the tranquil, surf-pop sound, it’s like watching a narrative in split screen, as a connection that was once strong is severed. (Photo by Ashley Gellman)

Indie pop trio Younger Hunger empathize with the daily grinders on “Dead Inside”

Posted on:

Sometimes it’s hard to admit that that job that pays the bills can be such a chore. Younger Hunger understand that plight with some humorous whimsy on "Dead Inside." The stuttering, yet sinuous electro-pop track by the Long Beach trio intertwines a curious amalgamation of glitched-out samples over a funk-lite rhythm. Sounds complicated, but at its core, the spooky, yet buoyant track is a breezy listen that could well make that long shift a little bit less of a drag.

"Dead Inside is the second single off of the trio’s forthcoming debut EP, which is out on December 7. Juan Rodríguez

Supermoon Video

Posted on:

The music video for Havania Whaal’s “Supermoon” was released this past week. It follows the protagonist as they fall asleep underneath a glowing full moon stuck to the wall. As happens in any good dream, everything in the video is out of place yet exactly where it’s supposed to be. It has the snarky attitude of indie-darlings like Ghost World and Juno, encased in the style of silent films. Havania Whaal’s distorted, buzzing music follows the protagonist as they attempt to navigate the romantically campy dreamscape. The characters in the video may be out of sync with their bodies, but they’re perfectly in tune with the music. It’s a playful house of horrors, one you’ll enjoy getting lost in.

Onionface – Dirty Prog/Grunge Rock, Sneaky Dee’s 11.17

Posted on:

Onionface is a rock n’ rollin trio from the Nation’s Capital. To me they’re like a grunge band with progressive influences and some fuzz cranked all the way up. Their bass player Calvin McCormick has a custom amp and pedal company (McCormick Analog) which must be a nice bonus to always have new top notch gear to try out. Their most recent record came out last year titled “Roll Over, Dog…And Run!” The opening track "Goodbye, Take Care" fires it up nicely with some influences from The Meat Puppets and The smalls. Onionface are regulars in the Toronto scene and can be witnessed live at Sneaky Dee’s on November 17th with Dirty Rick and Blackened Blues. – Kris Gies

New Rose shares new single + releases new LP at Elsewhere on 11.14

Posted on:

New Rose is gearing up to release their full-length album, Crying Eyes, via Broken Circles this coming November. The NYC cosmic country six-piece has already debuted the record’s windswept first single “Plenty of Flowers” and now they’re sharing the beautifully languid “Weeping Willow.” The forthcoming album follows the band’s first full-length, Morning Haze, which came out in 2017 and set the precedent for their particular brand of dusty, Americana-inspired indie rock. “Weeping Willow” is no different and basks in much of the same nostalgia-inducing golden hour light, with droopy sliding guitars and lilting vocals. This time around, New Rose kicks up the dust a bit with a moody bassline and a cagey percussive opening that resembles an ‘80s drum machine. The song drifts back into a familiar warm breeze soon enough with a kind of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” sentimentality. The vocalist sings, “There’s a weeping willow that sings to me/ A southern landscape with a northern breeze,”  which is the perfect imagery for a band with a rootsy sound tethered to an east coast locale. If you’re in NYC you can catch the band live at their record release at Elsewhere (Zone One) on November 14th, where they will be playing with The Letter Yellow and Teen Body. Crying Eyes is out November 8th via Broken Circles and you can listen to “Weeping Willow” below.
