The Rassle Drop Anticipated Debut Album

Posted on:

The Rassle caught our ear back in 2011, when the two-piece was performing around Brooklyn and garnering attention for their excellent live shows and hybrid psych-noise-pop sound. We had lost hope to see a full-length release, but the indie rock duo–made up of brothers Blair and Reed Van Nort–is finally ready to deliver debut album Roll On.

The Rassle’s edgier sonic qualities are leveled out by their indie rock sensibility, mixing softer psych-inspired melodies with solidly catchy songwriting chops. It’s all topped off with a slick mastering and mixing sheen that makes for an effortlessly great rock record. The 9 tracks on this record gleam thanks to shiny production from John O’Mahony, but still manage to keep the band’s charming ramshackle sound intact. With everything from stadium anthems to hooky sing along choruses, there’s something for everyone on Roll On. Listen below and don’t miss this band live when you get the chance. – Sara Nuta

Miles Francis is back with new single + video for “Sophomore Slump”

Posted on:

Back in February, Miles Arntzen a.k.a Miles Francis put out his debut solo EP Swimmers. Today he’s continuing to make waves with the release of new single and music video entitled “Sophomore Slump.”  Francis, who also played drums in Antibalas, is an NYC-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter who crafts organic, off-kilter pop. Directed by Charles Billot, the accompanying visuals for “Sophomore Slump” find Francis maneuvering dark corridors and bright balloons, surrounded by masked figures in feather boas dancing alongside the song’s jittery melody. Here’s what he had to say on the video’s genesis, “The video is basically a dark funhouse version of my mind. The clutter, the calm; childhood, adulthood; confidence, insecurity – it’s all in there, and I’m surveying all of it.” Watch below! – Sara Nuta

Debut Likes LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Likes is a new musical outfit fronted by Philly’s Ada Babar. Babar has been active the last few years with the Ada Babar Band, a split cassette with Palm’s Kasra Kurt, Suffer Dragon, and a whole slew of solo releases. They are also involved with a new label Nino Tomorrow, who recently reissued an obscure 80’s electronic album by the Texas artist Charles Ditto. With Likes, Babar is joined by Gavin O.Wald, Clarke Sondermann, Nat Grandbois, Emly Lyon, TC Helicon, Andrew Lee, and Eve Alpert. New Pedal toes the line between pop eccentricism and total campiness without landing on either side. The album is equal parts goofy and stunning, coming through with the laughs, while also running the listener through a full gambit of head bobbers and glitchtronic freakouts. Take a chance on this curveball, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. – Josh Kelly

Meg Myers Inspires at Sold Out Show

Posted on:

In a city with endless music venues, there is no place where your name shines brighter than the billboard at Antones Nightclub.  “Meg Myers – Sold Out” blared out over 5th street on Sunday night and the crowd begin to mass at the doorway.  Since the original scheduled date had been rescheduled from weeks ago due to Meg’s vocal surgery, fans were anticipatory and fervent.

Meg Myers has been releasing music for six years now and with the help of her writing partner, Doctor Rosen Rosen, has created a deep body of work that is potent as it is eclectic. The release of her second and latest album, Take Me To The Disco, has brought a second wave of earworms that have been added to the hit-laden debut album, Sorry.

Local electro-pop artist, Dossey, opened for Meg and brought an upbeat and 80’s-inspired energy that galvanized the audience while priming them for the main act. Meg Myers is 32 years old, her youthful appearance leads you to think she could be fresh out of college, and then she begins to sing and you hear a voice that is as powerful as it is timeless. The show kicked off the show with new songs like “Jealous Sea”, “The Death of Me” and “Take Me to the Disco” which were received well.

Older hits like “Motel”, “Sorry” and “Monster” all came out as well and served as red meat for Meg’s most vehement fans. The audience was an interesting mix of various age groups with teenagers, middle-aged people and older folk all present and equally fixated, albeit some shrieking more than others.

Onstage Meg engages in witty banter with the crowd while bearing her soul on each and every song. Her encore would prove to be the tipping point with her biggest hit to date, “Desire”, and her first single off the latest album, “Numb”. The crowd loosed their love upon Meg and her band and the only question that lingered, was how big the next venue would have to be to facilitate Meg Myer’s next visit to Austin.

Soul songwriter MELD launches Kickstarter for debut LP

Posted on:

Having released her debut EP H.U.R.T. in 2017, soul fusion singer-songwriter Melanie Dewey — known as MELD — has launched a Kickstarter to kick off recording sessions with her band for her upcoming debut LP. Dewey has performed around Nashville for a few years now, and has taken her act across ten different states and over twenty-five cities. Her hope with her music and her debut album is to help inspire more women into the forefront of soul music and to show that eclectic musical elements can jam well together when put together the right way. With her Kickstarter, Dewey hopes not only to cover all the costs for her band, the studio time, and the other production expenses, but also to build a record that will allow her to share her voice beyond anywhere she’s ever shared it before. You can view the campaign page here, and you can watch Dewey and the rest of MELD perform live at Rockwood Music Hall in New York below. – Will Sisskind

Darkwing Amps Things Up In New Visuals For “Vicious”

Posted on:

Last week, Darkwing put out their new EP, Super Silver, which came out on the heels of their loosie “Ignorant Ghost.” Today, they’re premiering the visuals for “Vicious” off of the split track “Vicious/Who U R.”

Despite being based out of Brooklyn-via-New Jersey, Darkwing has a sound that’s got a lot of west coast blood in it; you can hear a blend of surf punk, scuzzy garage, and fuzzy Southern California rock elements on their latest. “Quid Facere” and “Alley Cat Blues” both dip into the band’s melancholic side, while “Necropants" and “Vicious / Who U R” showcase rowdier, hooky song structures while still flirting with cynicism.

The video for “Vicious” is a dizzying mash-up of fish-lens images–from lip-syncing to quick cuts of party scenes and raucous shows. The song finds a balance between their amped up, oddball energy and east-coast neuroticism. The video only clocks in at one minute but manages to feel much longer. Check out both the video and the EP below.
