Gina Biver’s “Mirror” is 2spooky

Posted on:

The Fuse Ensemble achieves full spookiness on “Mirror” from The Music of Gina Biver. The track features a discordant string/piano thing with Gina Biver intoning, “something looks back each time I move, oh demon mask, sad, turned down mouth” from American poet Colette Inez’s poem “Empress in the Mirror.” In all, the creative mixing and pleasantly random improvisation is able to get the spooky sound, or as the liner notes put it, “awakening new shapes and realities while the repetitive nature of the Biver’s electric guitar maintains an underlying continuing, eternal presence.”

I could see some cool audio/visual collab on this one.

New Music Video: “Hanging Out of Cars” – Empath

Posted on:

Empath‘s Active Listening: Night on Earth is slated to arrive on May 3 via Get Better Records. Directed by Ali Donohue (Fleabite, Swanning, Waxahatchee), a new video has emerged for "Hanging Out of Cars”. Amphibians scatter across and traverse various vibrantly colored, craftily constructed, outdoor settings. The noisy, psych-tinged soundscapes are wonderfully enriched by the video’s creatively intriguing landscapes.

Bailey Minzenberger “Dramamine”

Posted on:

Singer/Songwriter Bailey Minzenberger recently released her debut LP, Dramamine. The album’s lead track and first single single is called “One”, and sets a tone for an album that blends lyrics that paint a picture of being cold, outside both physically and mentally, with music and vocals that tend to be warm and inviting.

You can catch Bailey Minzenberger on April 27th at TACO Spring Show (2215 S. Ford Ave) on April 27th with Mock Nine, Vision in Rhythm, North Lodge, Free Range, and many more.

The sweet, slacker pop of Isador Kaufman

Posted on:

Isador Kaufman’s debut EP, Scattered Efforts, is a “collection of songs about happy and sad.” It’s his first solo album after his former band, Watergate Sandals, disbanded in 2017. “I was in a bit of a creative rut for a while there,” Kaufman says, and is grateful to have re-found the creative energies to make Scattered Efforts. Some tracks have a bit of a Mac Demarco thing while others have a sometimes spacey, sometimes beachy psych rock feel. The simple description of “Pop” does not do this work justice. It’s an honest and raw collection, written, performed, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Kaufman himself. He recorded and mixed on Pro Tools then mastered songs on an old Foster 4 track cassette player he bought off Craigslist. As a first effort at production, we’re impressed. We’re also impressed that he decided to donate 100% of the proceeds from EP sales to Planned Parenthood. Stay tuned for tour dates and his second album, which is in the works as we speak. Like we say, stay tuned. – Michelle Kicherer, Associate Editor

Daddies come out swinging in debut EP, play Baby’s All Right 05.23

Posted on:

Garage rock is still kicking very hard in NYC thanks to bands like Daddies who take every aspect of the genre’s do-it-yourself(-and-have-fun) very seriously by churning out one distorted chord progression after the next in their first EP titled—simply and in classic punk fashion—EP 1. The crazed songs in their debut record summon the energy of ’70s pioneers like The Ramones and The Dead Kennedys. The acoustic opening in their song “GoodBye" (streaming) is perfectly disrupted by the electric guitars which come roaring in, and the aggression is taken to the next level by a seemingly constantly speeding tempo and by a furious drum solo finale – there’s Daddies for you. The group is taking the stage at Baby’s All Right on May 23, and it is bound to be a hell of a good time. Check out “GoodBye” here below. – Rene Cobar

Maru “Vela EP”

Posted on:

Maru Martinez is the Guitarist for the Progressive Metal band Paper Hero. Last week she released her solo debut EP, "Vela", and it is a breathtaking departure from Metal of Paper Hero. On this project her intricate guitar playing is on full display and accompanied by the intensely talented Jessica Burdeaux of City Mouth on drums.

The lone track with vocal is called “Sola” and features a contribution from Bernadette Conant of Bernie & The Wolf.

This EP is thoughtful, beautiful, Post-Rock, and after three times through, still left us wanting more.

New Track: “Real Name” – Big Nothing

Posted on:

Chris is the forthcoming full-length debut from Big Nothing, and is slated to arrive on May 10 via Salinas Records. The quartet recently shared its lead single “Real Name”. There is a catchy vulnerability in the songs emotive earnestness as a sense of isolation and not being seen for what you really are unfolds. You can catch the band, alongside Cherry and Swanning, at Radiator Hospital’s record release show on Tuesday, May 21 at PhilaMOCA. (Photo by Jared Castaldi)

Being Dead Blesses the Family “Apostle’s Prom”

Posted on:

Juli Kellerand and Cody Dosier would like you to think that they’ve let Satan into their heart, but the the truth is much darker – they’re conducting LSD-fueled experiments of friendship and musicianship under the guise of Being Dead. The early experimental data is showing a synergistic reaction that has led to the emission of druggy psych rock and hazed surf punk vapors, that are highly addictive. Idolatry, horses, twerking and medieval weaponry are themes that all flow seamlessly into the duo’s video for "Apostle’s Prom" which is a corrosive agent on the minds of our youth – but a positive delight for those already sporting a warped world view. The duo has released a new EP on Austin Town Hall records and will be playing on April 20th at Hole in the Wall with Duncan Fellows, The Oysters, Magic Rockers of Texas and Hi, Gene.
