Divey showcases serious sonic substance with new record “Beautiful Zero”

Posted on:

As far as DIY productions go Beautiful Zero, the latest record from Providence’s Divey (real name Alex Garzone) is a brief, but substantial listening experience carefully threaded to stimulate the mind. From the hypnotic vocal delivery and incessant electric guitar strum of “Call Me on the Phone Tonight” to the massive kick drum that drives “What U Do” the sounds stick to you as much as they stick with you. The immersive experience is generated by the smooth production of Garzone and friend Frank Mullen: the record is given an air of simplicity and bedroom-recording imagery while layering with deceptive skill. Divey is an artist on the fringe of the electro-rock revival currently spearheaded by artists like Des Rocs, which is excellent because it means he is free to go at it his way. Not easily labeled and engaging, the music of Divey is a modern treat your ears will thank you for indeed. We are streaming “What U Do” for you below. – Rene Cobar

Boo Riley Releases A New Single, “Mango Garry”

Posted on:

Manhattan-based artist Austin Lesch (aka Boo Riley)’s most recent single, "Mango Garry," is a clever, mid-tempo track vaguely remenescient of Steely Dan that will send you back to that sunny era in the ’80s when you could hear quality pop rock on the radio. From the beginning, the song is packed with sophisticated songwriting twists and held together by Lesch’s smooth, made-for-radio vocals. The song opens a three-track, impeccably produced and performed EP – you can stream it below. – Susan Moon

Cannons’ “Fire for You” sparks disco fever, release debut album Shadows

Posted on:

Electro-pop trio Cannons have released their debut album, Shadows, featuring headlining powerhouse, “Fire for You." Vocalist Michelle Joy pushes out beautifully nostalgic lyrics of love, loss, and everything few and far between. Ryan Clapham and Paul Davis complete this trio, painting colorful baselines with a funky disco charm that keeps your head wrapped in a warm, hazy atmosphere—perfect for the Monday blues or the Friday jitters. There is no doubt in my mind that this album is slowly becoming the fuel to my work week.

Shadows is out now via AntiFragile Music. Kayla Hay

Singer/Songwriter Kira Metcalf plays Elsehwere on July 24

Posted on:

In her blend of folk and pop Brooklyn-based artist Kira Metcalf mixes poetry with a variety of genres. Listening to her new LP Indelicate, this young talent writes songs about women’s experiences with the self-assuredness of a seasoned performer and an enviable introspective quality. Opening track "I Had a Head," is an acappella number that is as satisfying for its harmonizations as it is for Metcalf’s voice. "Thornbird" is an unexpected change in style, in part reminiscent of rock songwriters of 90’s like The Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan or – more recently – Paramore’s Hayley Williams.

Her new music video for "Lily" is equally poignant, showcasing Kira’s keenness to investigate moments that escape most of us. The line, "to have what I crave feels like a trick" is the song’s takeaway and the perfect summary of a personality that enjoys intellectual and lyrical reflection over… simple enjoyment. Kira Metcalf will perform live at Elsewhere’s Zone One on July 24th. – Susan Moon

New Track: “of Iron” (Feat. Gozu) – Acid Orphan

Posted on:

Acid Orphan, a.k.a. Andrea O. Bullard (of Etheric Felines), recently released a new single. DJ Diabolic handles production on “Of Iron,” which also features Gozu. Envisioning a time-traveling, alternative reality of living during the time of Genghis Khan, the track exhibits authoritative aggression. This storming delivery is compounded by the rock/hip-hop hybrid beat, injected with noise, as the percussive push remains omnipresent. An attacking intensity permeates within an energetic exuberance.
