Win 4 tickets to Au Revoir Simone show at Highline Ballroom on Jan. 07

Posted on:

One of our favorite hobbies here at The Deli is to brag about how much earlier we covered and/or booked some local bands that were later blessed by international recognition… Here we go, then: we first covered Au Revoir Simone in 2005 – the band also played a Deli show at quaint and cozy Pete’s Candy’s Store in Brooklyn. They were a brand new band at the time… we knew they were good, but we weren’t expecting that they would sell out arenas in Japan and China within a few years…
The three charming ladies will be back in their hometown in early 2010 for a show at Highline Ballroom on Thursday January 7. We have a bunch of free tickets available for readers: to enter the contest send us a 3 to 5 word description (or, better yet – make a Haiku) about the music of your favorite 3-girl-armed-with-synths band to this address: info [at] thedelimagazine.com. The 2 best entries will win 2 tickets to the show.

Submission Deadline December 11. Good luck!

Leave Me Alone

Pretty Good Dance Moves‘ latest single, "Leave Me Alone," has received the remix treatment. The catchy electro-pop tune has been remixed by David Wolf (who has previously mixed Crystal Castles, among others). Check out the video for "Leave Me Alone," which features Japanese girl-group, The Suzan. The video follows a gang of Japanese girls, warding off a mad scientist — it’s the video the Flaming Lips never made during Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Tres cool.

You can see Pretty Good Dance Moves in person on December 12th with I Fight Dragons and Cobalt & The Hired Guns at Metro. – Neph Basedow

DJs Throw Down: It’s a Melee, Red 7 12/6

Posted on:

Dj Orion

The busy folks of Learning Secrets will be the subject of our upcoming, and sadly final, installment of our DJ Education series (all written by the incomparable Tolly Moseley). Before we get to that, though, they’re putting together another DJ Melee – what is a DJ Melee? Glad you asked. Here, in their words, because we’re running low on our own words, is how it works:

"The DJ’s select from the hottest record stores in town and are each given only five minutes to pick up 30 pieces of vinyl to use in a thirty minute set at a series of DJ Melee parties thrown at Austin’s best clubs.  All vinyl goes straight into a locked box until show time, and local industry judges have the final vote on the DJ’s mixing skills and music knowledge."

High pressure produces diamonds, is the idea here…check out their next event this Sunday at Red 7, with DJs Cauze One, Bigface, Manny & Orion (above).

In Tall Buildings @ Bottom Lounge

Posted on:

Over the last few years Nomo has gained a solid reputation for pushing the boundaries between instrumental rock, afro-beats, and jazz. Their sound is playful, inventive and always soulful. Recently band members Erik Hall and Elliot Bergman decided to strip back a couple of the sonic layers from the Nomo sound and add some calming vocals. The resulting band is called In Tall Buildings, and they have some of the key Nomo elements at times, from trumpets to tropical rhythms, but their sound in rooted more soundly in folk music. The duo has recorded their debut album and it was recently announced that it will be released by Chicago’s Whistler Records in March, 2010.

If you love the eclectic nature of Nomo, but also enjoy gentle vocals you should check our In Tall Building at Bottom Lounge on Dec. 11th with Cains & Abels and Brooklyn’s Cavalier Rose.

On Saturday December 5 local music blog Guilt Free Pleasures is presenting an intimate night of folk/alt-country performances at a private art space in Brooklyn, NY, featuring fine Brooklyn folkster  Reverend John Delore among others. His blues-tinged alt-country rumbles with wistful tales of yearning. His gritty vocals have been likened to those of Hayes Carll, Mason Jennings and Steve Earle. Full line up and more info about this even can be found here.
