In between dorm life and mid-term exams, NYU trio Town Hall released their full-length debut “Roots and Bells” this spring. Though maybe not your typical college undergrads, the Brooklyn trio met as students at the Clive Davis Institute of Recording Music in 2010 and have been jamming together ever since. With the poppy, upbeat vocals of Stefan Weiner and Phoebe Ryan, the band charges through “Roots and Bells” with songs about mischief and longing that mix playful humor with a diverse set of stirring folk melodies. Joined by Plume Giant and The Due Diligence, they’ll be starting off their fall season on September 29th at Shea Stadium. Read Devon Antonetti’s interview with the band here.

The Dude Hates Cancer Afterparty w/Orbit to Leslie, Cheers Elephant & Swift Technique at JB’s Sept. 15
Today, North Bowl hosts the 7th annual The Dude Hates Cancer bowling tournament, an event aimed at raising awareness and financial support for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Teams of six to ten people contribute a flat rate of $280 for three hours of bowling, in one of three waves beginning at 11:30am, 2:30pm, and 5:30pm respectively. The deal includes free shoe rental, a free participation t-shirt, a chance to win prizes and free admission into Jack Treehorn’s afterparty at Johnny Brenda’s. Last year’s event raised $83,000, and they plan to kick its ass in typical dude fashion upping the bar to $100,000.
The afterparty includes a triple threat – the cool, eclectic grooves of Orbit to Leslie, the psychedelic get-down pop-rock of Cheers Elephant, and the funkalicious sounds of Swift Technique closing the night out. Grab a white Russian, and let the party begin. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave, 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita
Whiskey Shivers- “Middlesboro” (Live)
From our good friends (well…I say friends. More like they don’t know who we are, and we look on longingly) at The Good Music Club, we have a delicious video of Austin’s most beloved Whiskey Shivers playing a song off their new album "Rampa Head". Having been at the show myself I can safely vouch for the pure delight that is this performance. Here at The Deli Austin Office we are positively abuzz and excited about the new Whiskey Shivers album (I look across The Office, i.e. the room, at the cat in the corner. The cat stops and looks back at me blankly. It’s official. We are abuzzed). –Taylor Browne
Video of the Day- K Phillips & The Concho Pearls- “Lincoln City (Keep It Safe)”
Check out this video from the very perdy sounding country band K Phillips & The Concho Pearls. Wait for the chorus; it’s most definitely worth it. Also, female bassist = YES.
Future Islands New Video for “Grease

(via Thrill Jockey) "Future Islands are pleased to extend their North American tour, embarking on dates through September and then again in November. The band also released a video for "Grease" from their album On The Water. The video was directed by Jay Buim, who previously directed their videos for "Tin Man" and "Balance." "Grease" is created through a series of panoramic shots, gracefully showing the narrative of Future Islands’ tour-life."

Field Mouse releases new single + plays Pianos and Rock Shop
We watched Field Mouse progress from a singer songwriter based project to a full blown Dream Pop band, and their new single "How Do You Know" (streaming here) represent another step towards the most pillowy and ethereal of musical genres. The track will be released as a 7" through the Lefse Records Singles Series. NYC daydreamers, shoegazers and stargazers shouldn’t miss the band when they play Pianos tonight (09.14) and The Rock Shop on 09.19.
Weekend Warrior, September 14 – 16

It’s nice that you can always find a bunch of Philly area folks to rally around a good cause. And though we’re not sure what the Bombs and Bedlam: A Benefit Concert to Secure the Planet thingy is all about this Saturday at The Blockley, we damn sure know that they got some great local talent involved to show us a good time. The lineup consists of the always-up-for-fun guys and gals of Dangerous Ponies, Bucks County folk-hop outfit Illinois, retro rockers Juston Stens and the Get Real Gang, captivating folkies Spirit and Dust, and way rad Jerzey acts River City Extension and Brick + Mortar. Shall we say that this show is going to be the bomb? Sorry – yes, I do enjoy sounding like mom trying to be cool. The Blockley, 3801 Chestnut St., 8pm, $15, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Norwegian Arms & Laser Background Kick Off Philly House Show Residency at Dreamcastle Sept. 14
Come get weird tonight with Norwegian Arms and Laser Background at Dreamcastle in South Philly as they begin their Philly house show residency experiment. The guys sent us an email at the end of August announcing their plans to tour our city’s various house venues from mid-September to mid-October. The message also included a set of rules that the members of each band must adhere to during the tour (including living at each house for at least two days). You can check out the note with the complete list of rules and tour dates HERE.
Norwegian Arms posted this status on their Facebook the other night which perfectly sums up our feelings of why their house show tour is important for the city’s underground music scene and why you should go out and support the artists and houses involved. “I think the best thing about this House show residency is that not only does it allow me to play in four hardworking house venues in this city, but it also raises people’s awareness of spaces like there, where people allow folks to enter into their homes and share in a common cultural experience. We’ve also chosen them because they reflect different neighborhoods.” They’ll also be joined this evening by buddies The Circadian Rhythms and Jon Pfeffer (from Capillary Action). Dreamcastle, (Please contact one of the acts or the venue for more deets.), 8pm, $1 – $5 (sliding scale), All Ages, BYO-fun things – Dan Brightcliffe
NYC Artists on the rise: Alexandra Stewart, live at Glasslands on 09.17
Alexandra Stewart arrives to her music with the same wide open spirit that accompanies many of her fellow colleagues, artists like Bjork or Feist, with whom Stewart shares a link to Iceland’s legendary producer Valgeir Sigurðsson, through her own producer (and Sigurðsson’s apprentice) Alexander Overington. Like her own story, Stewart’s new album ‘Wàbà’ checks in with the force of a tireless immigrant, set to land on Brooklyn’s shores with a splash before finding its way to all our playlists over the next several months. Stewart is that kind of dangerous artist who threatens to upend expectations of what our local songwriters can do. The first single off her soon-to-be-released record is a mellow and slightly jazzy power rocker (‘Soul Like A Ghost,’ streaming below); so sure of it’s own power, it’ll leave you a little taken aback. But don’t worry, there’s plenty of perfectly quiet moments for you on the record too (‘Lullaby’ and ‘You Don’t Know How’) – you can stream the whole thing here.
Check out all these different moods when Stewart plays Glasslands Monday, September 17. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
Tinley Park 5 Benefit Show at “Turnerdome” Sept. 14
Nineties-style straight edge hardcore outfit Dying plays tonight at the Tinley Park 5 Benefit Show, held at the “Turnerdome.” Bringing awareness to the Tinley Park Five, anti-fascists who were arrested for taking action in shutting down hate speech. The band’s willingness to use flourishes and moments of severe wistfulness where pure aggression would have come naturally is refreshing. Unafraid of the tender moment, Dying starts their album History of Nothing off in a downright contemplative direction with "Pray," leading off with muted, almost dreamlike arpeggios that eventually smolder into the reality of their pummeling hardcore. The group’s sound is the loudest contender of the night, with the other bands on the lineup – Erik Petersen of Mischief Brew, The Adults, Corporate Hearts, Mean Streets, and Collingswood ska band Autocracy East – coming from wildly dissimilar ends of the punk spectrum for this night’s call to action. Turnerdome, N. 2nd St. and Turner Ave., 7pm, All Ages – Alyssa Greenberg
Free Download: Spring 2012 Selections – Lotus
Below is a free sampler of live recordings from local jamtronic band Lotus. The tracks are handpicked selections from their spring 2012 tour. The band released the compilation to celebrate a couple big shows for them – last weekend’s performance at legendary Red Rocks and tomorrow’s one-day fest at FDR Park. (Looks like Larry Magid is finally getting a chance to use his permits from the “rained out” POPPED! Festival.) If you dig taking hallucinogens and dancing, then tomorrow will be a nice day to do so in South Philly.
