Ahleuchatistas Black Spirituals IMA and Tonal Masher Play Starline Social Club – 5/26

Posted on:

We´re intensely excited about the upcoming line up at Oakland´s Starline Social Club on May 26th. If you´re a music listener who is always on the look out for a unique live music experience, this show is the event to catch:

Oakalnd´s BLACK SPIRITUALS is a collaboration between two soloists who have found a new platform for the intersection of tone-generating electronic technology and the heart-thumping technology of acoustic percussion. This duet features a new tradition in conversant, duo vernacular dynamics that sparked a revolution in our conceptions of space, stage, ritual, performance, geography, praxis, brotherhood, relationships, rockin’ out and more. AHLEUCHATISTAS (Asheville NC) is guitarist Shane Parish and drummer Ryan Oslance on a musical odyssey of pure imagination, limitless in influences, combining tight-knit composition with improvisation, and delivering powerful live shows. The project was founded in 2002 and has evolved organically as the muse leads through the creative sonic continuum…

IMA [ii-ma] ไปŠ. ็žฌ้–“: the electro-percussion duo of Amma Ateria and Nava Dunkelman explores distortions of time and handling of the ever present moment through restraint and release. Their array of metallic nature march forth with space expanding densities to brinks of breakage, situated to be caressed by the beautification of spaces in between. IMA have performed and collaborated with avant garde pioneers such as John Zorn, Fred Frith, Ikue Mori, and many others. TONAL MASHER is the solo electroacoustic project of Aram Shelton. By removing the mouthpiece and reed, Shelton explores a different aspect of a 1937 Conn alto saxophone. Starting with feedback generated via saxophone, microphone and amplifier, Shelton uses nontraditional fingerings to coax an instrument specific set of tones from the vintage horn. The resultant music features patient polyphony from a generally monophonic instrument, and highlights the percussive aspects of the saxophone via key clicks and pad thumps.

LAURA COLE – YOU ALWAYS HURT THE ONES YOU LOVE

Posted on:

Laura Cole…the sultry voice from Ancaster, Ontario has released a brand new track titled "You Always Hurt The Ones You Love". It is based off a poem with the same title written by Amy Winehouse and featured in the documentary "Amy". This poem hit home with Laura and her band so she took it upon herself to add a second verse and bridge to complete this wonderful tune. Laura debuted this song and video last Friday at Mill’s Hardware in Hamilton. All the proceeds from the show went to the Amy Winehouse Foundation. You can learn more at www.amywinehousefoundation.org. Enjoy the video! – Kris Gies

New Track: “Decade of Nothing” – Blood Sound

Posted on:

“Decade of Nothing,” the new single from the trio of Blood Sound, hits a solemn yet pleasant tone befitting the current aesthetic outdoors. The insistent movement created by synth, percussion and bass is enhanced by the grimness of the track’s vocals. The song will be available for purchase/download this Friday, May 20, and will be featured on the group’s forthcoming EP that is due out later this year. Catch Blood Sound with Gwenno tonight at Boot & Saddle.

Low Doses take their garage pop to Monty Hall on July 16th

Posted on:

Sixties garage and seventies power-pop are ubiquitous these days, in particular in the NYC scene. Jersey City’s Low Doses (who made the list of our best emerging Revival Pop/Rock NYC Artists of 2015) play them straightforward, deviating little; they rely on catchy hooks, hand-claps, and lines like “If I could, you know I would stop thinking about you” to subvert the modern cynic and be idiosyncratic. It works. The band has two shows at the Monty Hall scheduled on July 16th. Dave Cromwell

New Video: “Everything” – Psychic Teens

Posted on:

Psychic Teens‘ new video transforms a status quo children’s party into a rockin’ one. Directed by Eric Bresler, with Bob Sweeney handling cinematography, the post-punks take the stage at PhilaMOCA to a crowd of raucous children who smack balloons and eat/fight with cake to the downhill, hazy thump of  “Everything”. The song is featured on the band’s new album NERVE available via SRA Records. You can party along with Psychic Teens at their record release show on Saturday, May 28 at Johnny Brenda’s with Vivatape and Mt. Billions.

Come Feel The Afterglow Tonight at Lava Space

Posted on:
Michael Cantor (The Goodbye Party, Ex-Ambulars) and Sam Cook-Parrott (Radiator Hospital) combine forces as The Afterglows tonight at Lava Space for a First Time’s The Charm 2016 .  While Cook-Parrott has helped flesh-out The Goodbye Party’s live incarnation, this brand new pairing of the duo offers yet another wrinkle into the collaboration.  With a meshing of infectious pop-melody tempered by a knack for incisive, relatable lyricism, the pairing has the ability to quickly shift musical directions. Tonight, they’ll be joined by the rambunctious release of Todd Killingz, and the intimate acoustic reflections of Shannen Moser. While Bloomington’s Patrick Jennings (Purple 7/Hot New Mexicans) completes the billing. Lava Space (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more information.), 7:30pm, $5, All Ages- Michael Colavita

PREMIERE: KULULULU – “#14”

KULULULU are that kind of band that cover all bases during a performance. Not only is their music premium for jumping around and getting a bit crazy, but their costumes, crowd enthusing dancers and interesting monologues keep you glued and entertained throughout their whole set.

Their new video, "#14," couldn’t be more fitting a video for them to release. Simple and somewhat complex, the video centers around a creepy mask and dancing around in a parking garage. Its artsy, its awesome, and it’ll have you anticipating what they’re going to do next. You’ll see.

Check out the strange intrigue of "#14" below.

Oyinda is back with two new tracks – EP ‘Restless Minds,’ out in June

Posted on:

In the spring of 2015 we got really into Nigerian, NYC based electronic-soul chanteuse Oyinda‘s debut EP ‘Before the Fall‘ (single ‘What Still Remains" in particular). After a few months spent under the radar, Oyinda re-emerged in early 2016 with a string of shows and two new tracks that, again, marry her soulful vocals with moody, edgy electronic arrangements. Our favorite one is ‘Never Enough’ (streamiing below), a complex, dark and tense downtempo featuring antithetical elements like experimental programming and call and response vocals. More recent single ‘Flatline‘ – as suggested by the title – is a more linear R’n’B ballad. Both songs will be included in Oyinda’s upcoming EP ‘Restless Minds,’ out on June 10th.

Brooklyn’s Goldfeather premieres poignant ‘Spilled Milk’ off upcoming debut LP

Posted on:

It doesn’t seem too often that a band today tackles the dissolution not of a romance but of a friendship. That is just what Brooklyn self-described “folk music band meets ensemble” Goldfeather does, however, on “Spilled Milk” (streaming below), the bluegrass-girded lead single off its forthcoming debut LP ‘Patchwork Quilt.’ Starting with choral swells that perhaps lament the story of friends come and gone that follows, the poignant (even in its title) track is striking and laudable in its potentially underused subject matter: the aching absence of a one-time confidante. ‘Patchwork Quilt’ is scheduled for a September 2016 release, and Goldfeather is scheduled to play Park Slope’s Barbes on June 9th. – Zach Weg
