Dana Falconberry & Medicine Bow Walk You Through the Enigmas of Nature on “From the Forest Came the Fire”

Posted on:

The result of the latest collaboration between Dana Falconberry and her band Medicine Bow is the folksy album From the Forest Came the Fire (Modern Outsider), in which Falconberry tells tales of her days exploring the forests. Released this past April, this effort is one more quality addition to Falconberry’s repertoire of lyrical tunes with vivid imagery of nature and wildlife.

Each song from “From the Forest Came the Fire” is beautifully composed and filled with rich textures paired with elegant harmonies. On these tunes pushed by unbroken rhythm, Falconberry (who has experience playing classical music) effortlessly describes the uniqueness and tranquility of the landscapes in the United States.

Falconberry brings Medicine Bow along with her on this aural journey, said band being a musically diverse group of expert players that consists of Karla Manzur (keys), Gina Dvorak (banjo, guitar), Lindsey Verrill (cello), Christopher Cox (bass), and Mathhew Shepherd. With this group, Falconberry is able to retain the traditional sounds of a folk tune, while also experimenting outside those boundaries to bring out a truly fresh sound.

Along with using strings and humming to enhance her music, Falconberry takes us through an ethereal and passionate experience lyrically, as she takes up the rivers, trees, and mountains as characters to describe her story. One comes away from this lyrically-focused music feeling closer to nature, which seems to be Falconberry’s very point in making it.

If you too would like to vicariously explore the enigmas of nature through music, give three selected tracks from the album a listen below, and check the groups’ Facebook for their current tour dates to hear it performed live.

Pizzafest III showcases many NYC surf, punk and garage bands – June 23-25

Posted on:

As you may have noticed The Deli likes to organize music by genre – there are just too many darn bands these days, and we decided that genres are our friends in organizing this scene’s output – besides, regular Delis do that with food too, separating cheeses from meats from canned goods, so… maybe there’s a reason for that!). That’s why we are happy to promote a mini-fest like Pizzafest III, scheduled in three Bushwick venues from June 23rd to June 25th, that’s laser focused on surf, punk and garage rock. The event is organized by local label King Pizza Records, more info about the three shows can be found here. Check out below the playlist featuring all the NYC artists performing at this event!

New York singer/songwriter Troy premieres ‘Daisy’ + plays The Rock Shop tomorrow (6/16)

Posted on:

Following his November-released debut EP ‘When the Lights Came,’ New York soul man Troy today premieres his latest heart-tugging single, “Daisy” (streaming below). Progressing with a rugged warmth that is reminiscent of both Kings of Leon and Michael McDonald, the guitar-curled track evokes the titular, perished woman’s inner beauty with a purity that could only be beheld with awe. Listening to this impassioned song, it sounds as if Troy needed to sing it. Troy plays The Rock Shop tomorrow night (6/16). – Zach Weg

Buzz Alert! Big Thief plays Celebrate Brooklyn on 06.23 and Summer Stage in September

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Big Thief is the exemplification of what can happen to a band in one year when uncommon talent is matched by a great record, hard work and compelling live performances. The group, led by songwriter Adrianne Lenker, in just one year went from playing your usual Brooklyn venues in front of a few fans, to becoming one of the most talked about new indie acts out of NYC. Currently touring the US, Big Thief will be back in NYC on June 23rd for a live performance at the Prospect Park Shell within the Celebrate Brooklyn Fest. Later in September the band is also scheduled to open for Lucius at Central Park’s Summer Stage. If this is not an emerging band with buzz, we don’t know what is!
P.S. We are very proud to have premiered their video for single Masterpiece last year

Search for Meaning & Connection w/Spring Onion at Tralfamadore June 15

Posted on:

Catherine Dwyer is at the controls of the bedroom-folk sound of Spring Onion, performing tonight at Tralfamadore. Dwyer reaches back with an easily accessible, casually-strolling instrumental tone. However, while concise lyrical anecdotes appear to offer a set of temporary images, they also speak to a deeper microcosmic, pensive framework. They’re the type of songs that’ll sit with you for a while, ruffling one’s tucked away search for meaning and connection. With a reserved feel of emotive release capable of bursting at the seams at any time, Buster supplies a bare yet volatile vibe. Rochester-based Sad Cactus artist Big Fred provides quick flashes of fragile fury and levity. The Honeymoon Band rounds this lineup into its final shape. Belle Mare releases new single, “How Much Longer” – debut LP out in the summer

Posted on:

Now two years in the making, it seems like Belle Mare‘s debut LP is unhurriedly coming together, single by single – but what would you expect from a band that writes music this gentle? After that 2013 debut that won our hearts, the duo turned five-piece released three singles, the last of which, appropriately titled "How Much Longer," came out last week. In this track Belle Mare weave together arrangements more complex than they got us accustomed to, while still retaining the understated folkiness of their past releases.Vocalist Amelia Bushell’s ghost-like vocals drive the track’s dynamic shifts through one of the band’s loudest chorus to date. The debut LP is scheduled to be released later this summer.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

The Minks offer up a distinctly Nashville sound on “Sweet Talk”

Posted on:

Sweet Talk, the first recordings released by The Minks (featuring local everywhereman and Deli favorite Ron Gallo), is a mixture of styles that both makes sense and works pretty damn well. The distinctly Nashville pair of songs on the EP bring together the city’s two dominant styles at the moment—there’s the bluesy country side we all know so well, but it’s balanced out by the extra-fuzzy garage psych that’s gotten a reputation for itself in the past few years. There’s no hint of trying too hard to make a statement or anything like that; it comes off as a natural result of the band’s surroundings, whittled down into song form by incredibly capable hands. –Austin Phy

New Track: “Give It Time” – Marge

Posted on:

As a steady combination of fuzz and percussion provide a forward thrust, melodic semi-muffled vocals emerge in a new track from Marge, called “Give It Time,” giving way to a surprisingly delicate, inviting hook. While the quartet’s forthcoming album Bruise Easy won’t be released until September 4, the song is one of a trio that’s currently available for streaming, wetting listener’s appetite for the complete record. Marge will be back in town with Littler, Arm Candy, Horse Girls, and Bad Heaven on Sunday, June 26 at LAVA Space.

Stringer rises from the ashes of Heeney: live at Shea Stadium on 6.21

Posted on:

Stringer’s members are no stranger to the NYC DIY music scene. The Brooklyn-based four piece features several ex-members of Heeney (Max Kagan, Mark Fletcher, and John Spencer) and J Boxer of The Gradients and Bluffing – all acts that got their fair share of coverage in this very blog. Debut EP Dead Ass, released in December 2015, combines elements of grunge and punk, conjuring up a sound reminiscent of early post-hardcore acts like Rites of Spring and Embrace. The EP’s opener “Fear of Death” (streaming below) highlights the band’s fascination with grunge, while following tune “Just Like You” is a brief track characterized by swift, pounding drums and a snotty punk vocal delivery. These two songs exemplify the range within Boxer, Fletcher, and Kagan operate when sharing songwriting and vocal duties, layering their unique personalities and voices with Spencer’s precise drumming. The band will be playing Shea Stadium on June 21st in support of Washer. – John Honan
