Talk Before Sleep offer gentle dream pop on their self-titled EP

Posted on:

A calm, gentle drift washes over like a rippling tide in "Winona", the reverb-drenched track that opens Talk Before Sleep’s self-titled debut EP. Not to be confused with that other shoegaze ode to "Winona" by Drop Nineteens, but of a similar vein in how it treats distortion with a considerate touch, the El Monte trio later follow suit with a pair of tracks that veer from lushly poppy ("Clean") to more tensioned in its drige-like songwriting approach ("Lights"). A promising debut, Talk Before Sleep is a prudent first effort that emits a tranquil energy with its ambiguous curiosity. – Juan Rodríguez

OL’CD – “PREMIUM TRASH” EP!

Posted on:

These 4 Toronto garagers are back with a brand new bangin’ EP. Ol’CD play rippin’ garage rock with a lil bit of surf rock and a whole lotta party mixed in. The new EP titled "Premium Trash" starts with a straight up mosher "Hang Nail" which seems to tell the tale of a serious lingerer. "Not Me" is a sweet tune with some nice solo action. Everything gets a bit hectic on the last track "Paralyzed" which was a nice change in feels to finish off this record. "Premium Trash" available on their bandcamp page now! Ol’CD hits the road for the east coast today so have a look at their tour dates on their facebook page. Their Toronto release party for "Premium Trash" goes down on August 27th at Silver Dollar. – Kris Gies

Cloud Becomes Your Hand talk about recording on Delicious Audio

Posted on:

NYC’s Cloud Becomes Your Hand‘s creative potential is on full display in their sophomore album "Rest In Flea," a multi-colored sonic adventure released by intrepid Queens label Northern Spy, home to an enviable collection of NYC’s best experimental talents of all ages. But the record, a brilliantly quirky but very musical collage of robotic numbers, psychedelia and musical deconstruction, doesn’t tell the whole story. With electronic xylophone, clarinet and electric violin rounding up their drum/bass/guitar sonic backbone, the sextet offers a monstrously tight live show featuring perfectly choreographed movements and sublime moments of absurdity, reminiscent of a DIY blend of Devo, Wire and The Residents.

The Wimps bring their throwback rock and roll to Strange Matter on 8.09

Posted on:

The Wimps could easily be mistaken for a 60s band that never quite made it big, instead they’re a young Richmond based quartet who formed less than a year ago and take inspiration from prominent artists such as The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, and The Stooges. In April they released their debut self-titled full length, which features 10 garage pop tracks dripping with infectious melodies and catchy lyrics. The record highlights a variety of different sounds from the 60s that range from the easy going melodic pop of female singers like Lesley Gore to the R&B soul of artists like Percy Sledge. It also contains the energy and attitude of garage rock characterized by buzzing guitars and precise drumwork. The Wimps will be playing Strange Matter on August 9th in support of Lady God. – John Honan

The Way Ways to bring vintage soft-rock to Great Scott on 8/6

Posted on:

There’s always been a thin line between songs that pay homage to the past, and songs that regurgitate it. Tracks of Quincy band The Way Ways are definitely in the former camp, offering a fresh take on 50’s and 60’s soft-rock. Like who would’ve been their contemporaries, they have knack for strong song-writing that doesn’t try to do too much.  Chilled out vocals, steely guitars, and soft-spoken piano parts gently intermingle to create a sound that’s tranquil, but has enough teeth to keep things interesting. They also have some pretty fly solos on tracks like "Jeanne" too that probably sound great live. Speaking of, you can see them on 8/6 at Great Scott. —Henry Solotaroff-Webber

NYC Artist on the rise: COTE’s mellow pop

Posted on:

Newcomer pop artist COTE has clearly been keeping her ear’s peeled to indie pop’s current state of affairs. On the NYC artist’s debut track, "London," she brings together dreamy guitar licks in addition to nostalgic synth patterns — both of which are hallmarks of today’s pop landscape.  Her dark and sultry vocals might be slightly reminiscent of mellow-pop goddess Lana Del Rey, but make no mistake: her debut single ‘London’ shows a peronality that’s all her own. Most importantly, this is a beautifully produced track that showcases a young artist with a noteworthy voice and very promising songwriting chops. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber

Bad Magic set to play Strange Matter on 8.8 and bewitch us all

Posted on:

If this is what bad magic is then I don’t even want to know what good magic is because I’m sure I will keep coming back to the beguiling clutch of Bad Magic’s music. The Richmond trio–consisting of Julie Karr, Jimmy Held and Tim Falen–hits a sweet spot between rough and tender, coaxing us listeners with the rugged charm of high strung guitars and then easing us down with languid vocals. Julie bewitches with her vocals, textured with longing and fire, and commandeers each track with a snaking guitar riff that sneaks up on you before exploding. Bad Magic’s music is raw but melodious, packing every inch of each chord and progression with feeling and desire, melting everything around you away. Luckily enough they’re performing at Strange Matter on August 8 so if you’re looking to be enchanted just take a listen below and catch their show on monday! – Adriana S. Ballester

Field Mouse Record Release Show at Boot & Saddle Aug. 4

Posted on:

While the quintet of Field Mouse splits time between Philly and New York, the band celebrates their new album Episodic, officially being released tomorrow via Topshelf Records, with a show this evening at Boot & Saddle. The collection of songs carries a composed yet volatile potential to shift as personal sketches of well-oiled, melodic pop-rock are momentarily provided. Rachel Browne exhibits a smooth, steady vocal tone that flexes when emotively pushed. It’s simultaneously tender and tumultuous. Cynthia Ann Schemmer’s (Radiator Hospital) musical vehicle, Swanning, occupies the middle slot of this lineup – decidedly open lyrically whilst incorporating rougher edges to the overall sense of polish. Led by Kyle Gilbride (Swearin’), Missing Earth kicks off the festivities. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Two Moons and Arbor Daze Tied for Artist of the Month

Posted on:

This last round of the Deli Portland Artist of the Month poll resulted in a tie between two different nominees. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does it shows the wealth of good music offered in the city that just can’t be ignored. That being said, both Two Moons and Arbor Daze are artists deserving of more than just local attention.

Arbor Daze, a solo project by Aspen Koch, is actually quite indicative of the moniker itself, educing the state of calm often felt while taking in the beauty of a forest. Koch illicits a certain halcyon ambiance, dressed in a doleful cloak. Her interesting usage of looping adds texture to Arbor Daze tracks, taking them to a whole other level of interest and turmoiled relation.

Two Moons bring out a different sort of reaction with their songs of heavier broodiness. Guitarist and vocalist Aaron Liu takes the term "shredding" to a whole other level, using his guitar as a fierce weapon supporting his at times emotionally savage vocality that’s especially heard during live sets. While not necessarily always applying the "loud, quiet loud" structure to their songs, Two Moons have proven they’ve mastered just the right amount of force to strengthen soft songs and the appropriate amount of delicacy to abate benevolently porcine tracks.

Congrats to both Arbor Daze and Two Moons, the latter of which will be playing their next show Sunday at Kelly’s Olympian with Fringe Class. The newest round of the Deli AOTM poll features Bruhn, the Empty, Seahorse C-Section and Toothbone, so be sure to give them all a listen and vote for the one(s) you dig!
