Foursix release visual for ‘Favors,’ + play SoB’s tonight (09.06)

Posted on:

First and foremost, Foursix isn’t an artist, but rather a collective of seven, including rappers, producers, songwriters, a singer and a guitarist. Their output on Soundcloud so far has been limited to three tracks by a duo of emcees named J-Payso and Verdé Madera, and each song has demonstrated a ton of potential both on the rapping and Foursix’s producers side of things. J-payso and Verdé both have abstract, yet unpretencious flows, often stretching aproachable lyrics with complex rhyme schemes over several bars. Foursix’s producers then do a good job of accentuating their rapping with minimalist beats that give the lyrics enough room to shine. A good example of this is "Favors" (video streaming below), where the duo rap about being sick and tired of being asked for stuff while getting nothing in return over a fresh, keys-driven trap beat.

As a bonus, they also released a hilarious music video for the track which you can check out below. You can see them live at SoB’s on 9/6. —Henry Solotaroff-Webber, photo Credit: Brandon Todd

Sam Lewis brings his Americana on tour + plays The Basement East on 09.23

Posted on:

A sun-dappled song that soulfully tackles inner ennui, “The Cross I Wear” (streaming below) by Nashville-based singer/songwriter Sam Lewis is quietly pretty. Emanating a lilting alt-country feeling that warmly recalls My Morning Jacket or Hiss Golden Messenger, the keys-fleeted track (off Lewis’s eponymous debut album) is the yearning of a man with aching worries but, in its very existence, its sheer sounding out, is the coddling of those concerns, too. Sam Lewis is currently touring the country, and has a home town gig scheduled at The Basement East on September 23rd. – Zach Weg

Sylk 130 Reunion at the TLA Sept. 4

Posted on:
The TLA is set to burn down tonight. Not by malice, not by terrorists, not by pyromaniacs, and no, Great White is not playing. King Britt will be reuniting Sylk 130 to perform When the Funk Hits the Fan, his classic release, along with selections from Re-member’s Only. When the Funk changed Philly, and left techno, house, dance, and remix producers with their jaws dropped, like an artfully placed break. Also joining King Britt on stage this evening are former collaborators and friends Ursula Rucker, Lady Alma, Tanja Dixon, Vicki Miles, Alison Crockette, Capitol A, Chuck Treece, Tim Motzer, Anthony Tidd, Damon Bennett, Japhar Barron, Elliot Levin and more than likely, many more surprise and special guests. Boy Blake will be hosting this memorable event. TLA, 330 South St., 8:30pm, $20, All Ages (Photo by Gary Dan) – Keith Kelley

Loose Tooth Accelerates Into Top Gear at KFN Sept. 3

Posted on:

Rowdy, rambunctious, rumbling, percussion pummeling serves as the blunt energetic force behind the slow-burning, emotive fuse of Loose Tooth. There’s a somewhat sentimental stewing as the melodic pop-punk narratives unfold, and then the switch flips; the quartet accelerates into top gear, bringing an aggressive avalanche of sound along the way. The lyrically incisive yet playful electro-folk, bedroom-pop of Scott Leitch, a.k.a. Shelf Life, and the seductively smooth yet consistently surging sounds of Blue Smiley will be joining them. And performing for the first time in Philly, New York-based Poppies completes this Guild presented event at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Kung Fu Necktie 1250 N. Make space in your playlist for every song ever to come from new group Maurice and the Stiff Sisters, especially for the one we’re premiering today called "Heart Beats Faster."

Heartfelt tones come from lead vocalist Maurice Spencer, which only adds an extra element to the jovial, psych tinged heart pop that Maurice and the Stiff Sisters produce.

They’ve just about a handful of tracks, but based on how well they’re already done, there’s sure to be more. Fall in love with "Heart Beats Faster" below and check out their other song "Unlucky in Love" over on their Soundcloud page.

PAC NW Keeping the Festival Season Going

Posted on:

As if the last couple weeks haven’t been enough of a clusterfuck in the way of music festivals, tomorrow brings yet another to add to the list of attendance. This time around, it’s a collaboration between three bar venues downtown and Lagunitas Brewing.

PAC NW Fest features 15 bands spread out across Dante’s, Ash Street Saloon and Kelly’s Olympian, all in one Saturday night.

Catch what is sure to be a rowdy final performance from Foxy Lemon‘s drummer Zach Boggis as they headline the bill at Kelly’s Olympian. Supporting them will be Bubble Cats, the Hoons, Keeper Keeper and Internal State. That side room at Kelly’s is sure to reach capacity.

Over at Dante’s, you’ll find Seattle’s Moon Darling, Willow House, Arlo Indigo and Just Lions opening up for King Who, the new moniker for the trippy synth pop group Us Lights.

Dark pop rock lovers Skull Diver will be closing out the night at Ash Street Saloon with their psychedelic visuals and ethereal vocals. Febian Perez’s post-Bike Thief project Eclisse will also take the stage, along with Rader, Young Hunter and Salo Panto.

All shows start at 7 p.m. Wristbands for all three venues are available for $12 adv, $15 door with single show tickets being $8. Wristbands can be picked up tomorrow at Ash Street Saloon only. Purchase wristbands here. Enjoy!

Weekend Warrior, September 2 – 5

Though the corporate monstrosity known as Made In America will be taking over Center City Philly this weekend, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have a safe haven away from the mainstream crap that will be flooding our streets. Tonight at Nacho House, get the feels with the warm, comforting harmonies of The Afterglows. The natural musical partnership of West Philly housemates Michael Cantor (The Goodbye Party, ex-Ambulars) and Sam Cooke-Parrott (Radiator Hospital) will be celebrating the release of their collaborative self-titled debut LP, which you will be able to purchase this evening on vinyl. It will be a “chill” night of “soft sounds” that will also include local singer-songwriter Shannen Moser and former Chumped frontwoman Anika Pyle. And you won’t have to consume any crappy, overpriced Buds! Nacho House (Please contact one of the acts or venue for more info.), 8pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Check out Cat Be Damned’s thoughtful and sleepy dream pop

Posted on:

Cat Be Damned is the lo-fi recording project of Richmond artist Erik Phillips, whose latest album Daydreams in a Roach Motel was released in May via Joy Void Records. His intimately soft tracks reflect on his introverted and antisocial tendencies, while also examining religion and what it’s like to be queer in the South. Drawing from inspirations such as Elvis Depressedly, Neil Young, and Elliot Smith, Phillips’ sleepy tracks employ the use of hushed vocals and melodic synths to shape his placid sound. – John Honan

Free Strange Parts & Valley Exit (Full Band) Show at JB’s Sept. 2

Posted on:

Catch the first free show ever at Johnny Brenda’s! Here’s a rundown of what you can expect to see upstairs. Producer extraordinaire Jeff Zeigler slips further into the space-age experimental pool of Valley Exit. With a somewhat fluid cast of characters that includes April Harkanson (Downtown Club, Myrrias), Steve Urgo (Myrrias), Josh Meakim (A Sunny Day In Glasgow, The Fantastic Imagination), the band swiftly shifts among a wide expanse of electronic exploration in an accessible yet discovery-oriented mode. This evening’s show will feature the dynamic pairing of Attia Taylor & Corey Duncan (Oh! Pears), who has recently returned after a stint as a resident on the West Coast), a.k.a. Strange Parts. Their fresh single,  “Asleep in the Flowers,” effortlessly combines Taylor’s enchanting vocals with a heavy dose of percussion and synth, developing a deep hypnotic groove that you’ll be in no rush to pull yourself out of, offering a glimpse into their multi- dimensional tones. Emily Robb (Lantern, Louie Louie, Myrrias) rounds out this free night of music with her collection of vinyl for your listening pleasure. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N.
