New Music Video: “By The Light” – Moor Mother

Posted on:

Avant-garde sound sculptor Moor Mother, a.k.a. Camae Ayewa, premiered her new music video for "By The Light" earlier today over at Impose Magazine. The Patrick JF Smith-directed creation does an excellent job of playing off the eariness of the track and capturing her tale of urban horror in a a fitting setting before Ayewa spits fury and demonstrates the ability to control her own destiny, no matter the circumstances, through her convictions, words and art. "By The Light" can be found on her new full-lenth album, Fetish Bones, which is available via Don Giovanni Records. Moor Mother will be celebrating her record release in Philly on Saturday, September 24 at Yung Kandy Collective, sharing the stage with NAH.

New England Record of the Month: Astronoid (live at Great Scott on 09.13)

Posted on:

Boston’s Astronoid interject beautifully dreamy instrumentation and ethereal vocals into black metal on their impressive debut full length Air, which was released in June on the Finnish metal label Blood Music. It cohesively blends shoegaze, thrash, prog-rock, black metal, and punk to form what they call “dream thrash”. While the five-piece embraces the clean atmospheric sounds of post-rock bands like Explosions in the Sky, they also offer a pummeling and swift assault of black metal blast beats that shows off drummer’s Matt St. Jean’s solid skills. Instead of resorting to the usual harsh and guttural screams the black metal genre is known for, vocalist Brett Boland uses an elegantly clean vocal delivery that channels the airy sounds of popular shoegaze acts such as Slowdive and Ride. It would be easy to lose sight of their goal on an LP that pulls from an eclectic group of influences, but Astronoid do a fantastic job at forging a sound that stays consistent throughout the album. They will be playing at Great Scott on September 13th in support of Ghost Bath! – John Honan

Weyes Blood moves from NYC to LA, release singles “Do You Need My Love” and “Seven Words”

Posted on:

Straddling the line betweeen Otis Redding’s soulful vintage pop and Nico’s decadent, maudit songwriting, Weyes Blood (aka Natalie Merring, who recently relocated from NYC to LA) is certainly a singular talent. Gifted with an incredibly deep and expressive voice, until recently the singer songwriter performed solo on stage with just an acoustic guitar and a four track recorder playing anything from vintage sounding instrumental tracks to background noise, but she will be joined by a full band for her upcoming tour. Weyes blood recently unveiled two singles from her forthcoming album, Front Row Seat To Earth, titled "Seven Words" and “Do You Need My Love” (both streaming below). The latter, released a few days ago, struggles with impossible love, and the feedback loop that such a love engenders: the harder to grasp, the easier to let oneself slide into unchecked romance. Angelinos will be able to catch her at The Resident on September 15th, while New Yorkers who missed her performance at Rough Trade this weekend will get another chance on November 10th at The Park Church Co-op.

Happy 10th Anniversary Week, Johnny Brenda’s!!!

Posted on:
For those who’ve been lucky enough to live through the renaissance that Philly’s music scene has been experiencing for the last decade or so, we’d like to remind you of a time when the next big thing in music was not likely going to be discovered in your favorite local DIY space. With the exception of R5 Productions, who was only consistently booking the First Unitarian Church at the time and just starting to gain a great reputation nationally in the indie music scene, many of the music venues were known more for ripping off artists than helping to nurture the music community. However, once Johnny Brenda’s renovated its second floor into a concert space, it was a total game changer – forever raising the bar in Philly. (Thank you!) We finally had a world-class music venue that actually cared about the artists’ and concertgoers’ experience. (What local musician out there didn’t appreciate the complimentary Greek plate in the backstage when he or she first performed there?) Johnny Brenda’s became a cornerstone for the arts & culture community in Fishtown and throughout Philadelphia.

This week marks the beloved establishment’s 10th Anniversary as a music venue, and they’ll be celebrating it with some kick-ass events that start this evening with the soulful, powerful ache of Hop Along frontwoman Frances Quinlan, the polished indie-pop of Hurry, and the “heavenly blues” of The Goodbye Party. You also surely don’t want to miss Tuesday night’s psych explorations with Bardo Pond, Birds of Maya, and Chris Forsyth. The rest of the week’s festivities will also include evenings with Rocky Votolato, The Album Leaf, IGNITE Philly, and much more. Cheers to all the good folks at JB’s! – Q.D. Tran

Embrace the Ethereal Capacity of Dulls at Ortlieb’s Sept. 11

Posted on:

A muggy yet enticing psych haze draws one toward the dream-like state that is Dulls. Then, as your about to drift into the sonic waters, a tumultuous typhoon appears, smacking you into shoegazing submission. Increasing gradually, the force of the storm becomes more evident, but once you’re in its volatile center, there’s no need to retreat. Embrace the ethereal capacity of searing guitars, incoming percussions and enchanting vocals. Tonight at Ortlieb’s, they’ll be paired with the drifting, ambient, time-warping tones of The Stargazer Lillies, the tempered, magnetic, enclosing harmony of The Lulls, and the cloud-exploring expanses of Tessellations. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Heartwood releases impassioned new single “Peace of Mind”

Posted on:

Indie rock quartet Heartwood first graced us close to half a year ago with "Can’t You", a promising single that had a vivid anthemic quality with its prominent harmonies and noodling guitars. Their latest single, "Peace of Mind", is a serious step up for a band that is embracing a no-frills form of guitar rock that both ehtuses and invigorates. Lead by Michael Armstrong’s superb vocal range, the track propels forward a hyper-melodic guitar hook that steers its way to a memorable chorus that is all the more augmented by the band’s radiant harmonic phrasing.

The Bigness & Liz de Lise Joint Record Release Show at Ortlieb’s Sept. 10

Posted on:

Ortlieb’s will be hosting a show this evening celebrating a pair of new releases. With their latest album Time Traveler (which was co-produced with Jeff Zeigler) slated for release on September 16, the quartet of The Bigness hits the ground running as Kristin Bigness’s vocals craft an intimate yet fiercely powerful setting. Coated in layers of polished rock instrumentation that still holds an emotional grip, the group hits melodic touchstones while an extra gear breaks them loose. With her self-titled full-length debut, Liz de Lise weaves an elegant, vocal-oriented, folk-jazz hybrid, often eliciting an emotional response. However, the sounds can also carry a bubbly, pop sensibility. The tumbling Americana-flavored rock of Flat Mary Road will also get things started. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St., 8pm, $10, 21+ -Michael Colavita

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Pretty Words

Posted on:
Rising from the ashes of “a thrash metal band that never did anything,” Josh Crackett (guitar, vocals, synth) and Paul Bothwell (guitar) didn’t seem to have much trouble getting drummer Dom Russo and bassist Justin Kohn on board to form Pretty Words, based on the strength of their recorded demos. We also liked what we heard and so did you. That is why Pretty Words was chosen as our recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner. You can check out what Crackett and the boys have been getting into and where they’ve been in our “get to know ya” interview HERE. (Photo by Jordy Lyric)
