On a mild March Saturday night in Chicago there is always a wide array of shows taking place so it can be a challenge to select the right venue and lineup. However, this past Saturday the choice was clear since it would be the first time Chicago would get to see and hear what is the next evolution for the Psych Punk group Kangaroo Court.
The night began at the nearly full Subterranean with the post hardcore group mail. setting the tone for what would be a pretty raucous evening. The group released their first two singles back in 2023, but last month dropped a noisy live EP that totally changed our perspective of where they were headed. It is not often you come across a band with a drummer that is also the lead singer. However, it was the moment he began playing the trumpet, while drumming, and singing that we were sold on mail.’s blend of the screamo, and melodic hardcore.

Next up the hyped crowd moved even closer to the stage for Yeshi Regalado and La Rosa Noir. The post punk, latin surf rock group is always a ton of fun and have been building an incredible live show and reputation since releasing their debut full-length, Arellano, back in 2023. With the second appearance of a trumpet and the contagious dance moves of Regalado the crowd began to really move and get involved. However, it wasn’t until she jumped off stage to start the night’s first of many mosh pits that vibe truly shifted. The performance really came to a climax during the group’s roaring performance of their hit single “Chicano Stomp”, and the now packed venue went wild.

By the time Jack Luce and the revamped line-up of Kangaroo Court took the stage the room was ready to explode. The grouped began their set with several new songs that had the crowd moshing and crowd surfing instantly. Yet when they launched into a series of familiar sounds from their 2023 debut album, This is Kangaroo Court, the energy rose into a whole level including a surprisingly well timed audience member stage diving. It was clear that Luce was in his element and absolutely thrilled to be back on stage.
