Besides having a sweet name, Jean Daddy plays some deadly garage punk tunes. They put together some fast n heavy rock tunes that’ll make you drive like a maniac and pretty much make you not give a fuck in general. Listen to Salmon Candy to know what I’m talking about. This 4 piece band from Kitchener will be in Toronto on Friday Night at the Central with Wine Lips and Possum. – Kris Gies
BLACKDOG BALLROOM – INDIE MOD ROCK
Blackdog Ballroom is a 4 piece indie/mod rock group comin out of Richmond Hill, Ontario. They released an album in January of this year titled “This Is Blackdog Ballroom.” The record opens up with a track called “Sounds Like Now” which is a catchy tune that’ll easily get stuck in your head. It has a bit of a 90‘s feel to it which combined with the mod style they got goin on makes for an interesting combo. November 4th they’ll be rockin Cherry Cola’s for Matt Groopie’s birthday bash. Have a listen to a track right here… – Kris Gies
THE PLAIN STEEL – NEW LP!
They call themselves "folk n’ roll" which is a fairly accurate description. The Plain Steel have been around the Hamilton scene for many years now and they are getting ready to release their second full length album. The record is titled "Slow Day In A One Horse Town" which can sometimes be the feelings you get in Hamilton. The folks there know how to party when there is something going on though. This Friday The Plain Steel are throwing their release party at the Casbah. Have a listen to their single "Living Memory" which delicately unveils their folk n’ roll sounds complete with a soothing cello and nice guitar licks. Joining them will be the Beach Bats, Local Haunts and Will Gillespie. 5 bucks and doors at 8. – Kris Gies
HOODED FANG – “VENUS ON EDGE”
Creepy indie rock from right here in Toronto. That’s what I’m gettin’ from Hooded Fang. Their album “Venus on Earth” was released earlier this year on Daps Records. They have some very unique sounds in their music but still keep it down the indie rock alley. The vocals in “Tunnel Vision” are a bit mesmerizing especially when mixed in with the somewhat hectic instrumentation. They just finished a summer tour in support of a new album so perhaps we will give them a few days to recover. Look for upcoming Hooded Fang shows on their website. – Kris Gies
HELLO HARVARD – “SILLY THINGS” EP
Burlington, Ontario popsters Hello Harvard are making their way back to the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern this weekend. They released their debut EP "Silly Things" in May. The title track kicks off the album and it lays a solid foundation of what to expect. They have nice vocals with catchy hooks all over their well thought out pop-rock sound. It still kinda feels like summer and these tunes have serious summer feels. They probably have girls at their shows too. So go see em on October 1st at the ‘Shoe.
CROWN LANDS – “BEING RIGHT” PREMIERE!
Current Band of the Month here at the Deli – Crown Lands have done up a live-off-the-floor video for their tune "Being Right" at Rattlebox Studios. This video gives you a glimpse of how these 2 fellas make their huge sound. Cody Bowles rocks the drums very solid and consistent and he howls at the same time with a Wolfmother feel to his voice. Kevin Comeau on guitar and bass pedals is very impressive and it seems his multi-tasking is key to the full sound this 2 piece band produces. I’m often skeptical about 2 piece bands but Crown Lands have figured out something special. They will be at Hard Luck Bar on Thursday September 29 with The Kerouacs, Big Lonely and The Ballroom Babies. Here is a link to that event. Enjoy the video. – Kris Gies
DAN EDMONDS – “LOVE CAN BE A TUNNEL”
Dan Edmonds is gettin’ his solo career going quite nicely since his former band Harlen Pepper decided to go their separate ways. His debut solo album "Ladies on the Corner" will be released on October 7th via Missed Connection Records and Edmonds has dropped a video for the lead single. "Love Can Be A Tunnel" has a laid back folk rock feel with a cool chord progression and hypnotic vocal melodies. The song is about some ladies on the corner that he would talk to before heading into the studio in downtown Hamilton. The song shows there are different tunnels of love with the first verse being rather dark and the second becoming more positive. The video was directed by Taylor Heres. He’ll be at The Dakota Tavern on October 7th before heading on a tour to Western Canada. – Kris Gies
WEAVES – LP OUT NOW!
Buzz Records band Weaves have recently dropped their debut self titled LP. Seems like everyone is excited about it from Toronto to Europe where they will be headed very soon. Female fronted indie rock with an edge. The rhythm grooves while the guitar and synth lay sweet hooks. The initial comparison would go to fellow Toronto band Metric however Weaves sound way more creative both musically and lyrically. When they return from Europe they play the Mod Club on November 3rd. Ya best go see em before they take off on a new worldly adventure. Have a listen to "Birds & Bees" from their debut LP available now. – Kris Gies
SUN K – TORONTO URBAN ROOTS FESTIVAL 2016
This weekend at Fort York is the Toronto Urban Roots Festival! Along with my some of my favorites Matt Mays, The Sheepdogs, The Sadies and Corb Lund is a local band from right here in Toronto creating a big buzz these days. Sun K consists of 5 talented musicians, most of whom play multiple instruments on their tunes. Influenced by the likes of Neil Young and The Band they have major roots influence in their rock n roll. Whether you wanna get messy on a Friday night or take it easy drivin’ home on Sunday Sun K will have a tune for you. They play TURF on Sunday at 2:10 on the Battle of York Stage. – Kris Gies
MATLOCK EXPRESSWAY – POP PUNK FROM THE ‘SHWA
Comin’ from the eastern suburb of Oshawa is a 4 piece indie band called “Matlock Expressway”. They have a nicely polished pop punk sound that anyone who grew up listening to the likes of Sum 41 would easily be able to grasp on to. Punchy n’ tight. Happy tunes that are also kinda sad. Their new EP “Why Is This Time Any Different” was released last month and features 5 tunes. Most of which could be on the next American Pie soundtrack… – Kris Gies
Elementals – Hittin’ Up The Shoe!
Comin’ from a small town just outside the Nation’s Capital…Elementals are a grunge rock trio with some serious skills. Last year they released their debut album "I’m Not Here, I’m Not Real" and I must say it’s one of the best indie releases I’ve heard in a long time. These 3 rock hard with well put together tunes and lots of emotion. There are some obvious grunge influences in their music but they are able to give it their own style with the way the tunes are performed and arranged. "Debase" is an absolute classic. It brings in the classic loud/soft dynamics of 90’s rock but adds a 3rd layer for the chorus and it changes the game completely. These fellas will be playing in Toronto for the first time ever on Friday September 2nd at the Horseshoe Tavern. – Kris Gies
Tonemirror – Brand New Shoegaze!
Tonemirror from what I can tell are very new on the Toronto music scene. They’re a two piece shoegazer duo making some very dreamy indie tunes. They released a single this year titled “Supermoon” with a b-side properly titled “B-Side”. There is certainly a specific type of plant you can inhale to enhance Tonemirror’s vibrations when listening. Tonemirror plays Lee’s Palace on September 8th. – Kris Gies
