Toronto’s garage scene is booming right now and right in the thick of it is Vypers. A wild 4 piece psych garage band that look as dirty as they sound. They just opened up for Black Lips at the Horseshoe but if you missed that don’t worry. Listen to their new single "Mr.Girl" right now and get lost in the duel guitar threat comin’ at ya. The fight between fuzz and reverb is a real battle with Vypers. It may never end. Vypers will be joining The Tenenbaums and Wine Lips on June 10th at Cherry Colas. – Kris Gies
TOMAHAWK LOVE – “TAKE THE BAIT”
Tomahawk Love are a rock n roll band from Mississauga. Their brand new album "Take The Bait" offers up some classic pop punk influences that along with their self proclaimed blue collar approach brings together their sound in an enjoyable way. They were finalists in the HTZ FM Rock Search a couple years ago and were able to rock the stage at Riot Fest. If you like fun rock n roll tunes that are easy to sink in to then have a go with Tomahawk Love. This video for "Judy Nails" was shot at Stop, Drop n Roll on College St. They are playing the Bread n’ Honey Festival in Mississauga on June 3rd and will be at the Mod Club in Toronto on June 6 opening up for CKY, The Wild! and the Familiars. – Kris Gies
THE SOLE PURSUIT – INDIE PROG ROCK
Here’s some prog-indie rock from the ‘burbs of Brampton. The Sole Pursuit kick off their album "Flower City After Dark" with an epic instrumental intro on the track "Ashes". The vocals would make it or break it at this point and singer Kyle Dawe comes in with enough intensity to keep this track rolling. Aggressive guitar and interesting arrangements are the key ingredients for the Soul Pursuit. Listen to the album on their bandcamp page. – Kris Gies
THINLY VEILED DOUBLE ENTENDRES – “CAPTAIN FISH HEART”
Long band name/short song. The Thinly Veiled Double Entendres have released a video for their single "Captain Fish Heart". This little ditty is a fun rockabilly tune that’ll get your toes tappin’. I recommend findin’ yourself a nice lady to hit the floor with and spin around until it’s time for the next drink. TTVDE put on a great live show with a solid rhythm section, powerful vocals, slinky guitar licks and nice harmonies. They could play at the saloon or the rock bar…as long as they have some booze to fuel em up. Go see these ladies and fellas on Friday at Cherry Colas along with Flamingo Báy and Jim Dan Dee. – Kris Gies
THE TENENBAUMS – SMALL TOWN GRAVEL PUNK
These guys were raised in a small town near Ottawa. So they had plenty of time to drink cheap beer and make dirty punk tunes. Gravel punk unique to the Tenenbaums. Hectic rock n roll that is still catchy…that makes for a great combo. "We’ll Always Have Milhouse" is available on their bandcamp page. So crank it before The Tenenbaums come to town. Make some noise for the Tenenbaums at Cherry Cola’s on June 10th along with Wine Lips. – Kris Gies
OLD JAMES – REAL ROCK N’ ROLL
Don’t worry everybody…rock n roll is alive and well. Thanks to Old James. This power trio truly brings back the deadly rock n roll riffage of the 70’s. The opening track from their album "Speaks Volumes" absolutely sets the tone for what you’re about to experience. "Don’t Put It On Me" immediately hits you with face melting electric guitar with a Bruce Dickinson-esque scream and away we go. This tune will get you fired up for the weekend…which is all you really need in life. – Kris Gies
HOT GARBAGE – “HONEY/BABY” TAPE
Hot Garbage has just released a new double sided single "Honey/Baby". Side 1 features the tune "Honey Tree". A dreamy garage pop tune that takes you floating on a cloud of gentle vocals. It slowly transforms into a new realm of noise with carnival-like synth noises as the whole tune picks up steam. Let Hot Garbage take you for a ride through their interesting tunes. They are having a release party for the "Honey/Baby" Tape on Thursday (May 11) at The Baby G! – Kris Gies
GREENBANK – GREAT CANADIANA
Greenbank hail from Thunder Bay, Ontario. Very nice harmonies from these guys over their pure Canadiana tunes. Cut from the cloth knitted by Canadian legends like Neil Young and The Band, I get a sense of rural landscape listening to them. Their tunes although new could still give you a nice sense of nostalgia. From Thunder Bay to LA these guys can hold their own. They will be at the Painted Lady on May 10th. – Kris Gies
KING BEEZ – “POLLINATION” VIDEO
Toronto based surf-punk band King Beez are back with their first release in over 3 years. These guys give surf rock a whole new spin with heavy metal influences and a whole rack of punk rock attitude. Their video for "Pollination" shows the Beez in all their glory. Playing in various venues with frontman Matt Groopie roaming the streets and shredding on the roof. King Beez "Rumble Bee" EP is available now. See em May 11th at the Cadillac Lounge. – Kris Gies
PET HEADS – “STRANGE SERENITY”
Pet Heads is the brainchild of Carlos Coronado. I wanna call it indie-soul. They have just released a video for the track "Strange Serenity". It’s a dreamy tune with soulful synth and smooth vocals. The video features Mr.Coronado himself showing his best solo rhythmic steps which impressed the lady enough for her to help him finish it off. Cool and unique track with a video to match. See ’em Saturday May 6 at Handlebar in Kensington along with Yeomans, Champion Ski and The Drywall Heels. – Kris Gies
THE EFFENS – GLAM GRUNGE AT THE BOVINE!
How bout a grunge/glam combo? Thats The Effens. Their video for "Burn Blush" is actually kind of hard to watch. It’s like an episode of Fear Factor watching this worm thing hang on to some guy’s face….and then it goes ON HIS EYEBALL…wipe that thing off already! Anyways the song is quite good…very heavy on the grunge rock. Simple and sludgy downstrokes on the guitar set the tone for the whole song. The Effens play Bovine Sex Club on May 13th with Ol’CD and The Leslie Spits. Kris Gies
HIGH HEELS LO FI – PREMIER PARTY ROCK BAND
Toronto’s Premier Party Rock Band – High Heels Lo Fi are a half n half guy/girl pop rock band. They have fuzzy pop-punk melodies along with greasy female vocals. Definitely a vintage vibe kinda like the New York Dolls, Joan Jett and maybe a little bit of KISS. Might as well just get wasted while watching them rock out live. High Heels Lo-Fi play Junction City Music Hall on Saturday with The Danger Bees, Big Name Actors and Flamingo Báy. – Kris Gies
