Brookyln’s fuzzed-out psychedelic rock group, Heliotropes have a sound that would please the fans of Black Sabbath and Sleater-Kinney. Their latest single, Moonlight, is characterized by dark, heavy guitar riffs and melancholy strings that swirl around singer, Jessica Numsuwankijkul’s brooding vocal style. Los Angeles label, Manimal Vinyl will release the band’s first full-length album this Spring. Heliotropes are currently on tour with UK band Esbend and will be playing Mercury Lounge on 03.22 and The Knit on 03.23. – Andy Lambert

Oakland’s Warm Soda flaunts a gift for punchy power pop hooks reminiscent of classic punk bands like The Buzzocks and The Soft Boys. Their first full-length album, Someone For You, drops next week on Castle Face Records (Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall). The album was recorded at the band’s own studio, Fuzz City Studio, and offers twelve raucous tracks that are bursting with retro gusto. Singer Matthew Melton’s vocals maintain a peculiar and attractive delicacy against the backdrop of vintage rock ‘n’ roll overdrive. Warm Soda is currently busy touring the U.S., and will return to the Bay Area in late April. Stream Someone For You in its entirety here. -Andy Lambert

Oakland based electronic, psychedelic pop band, Mwahaha is making waves with their distinct brand of ethereal electro psychedelia. A burst of recent exposure, including love from NPR and a spot on the Warp Records SXSW showcase, has made these sonic savants difficult to ignore. LA-based indie label Plug Research has singed the band, and will re-release their self-titled debut album later this month.
The record is a swirling vortex of fluid textures and glitch honey. Think Elephant Six Collective meets TV On the Radio. Track highlights include Swimmer, Deep Sleep and Love–the latter featuring tUnE-yArDs‘ Merril Garbus.
The band recorded “Mwahaha” with Oakland-based engineer Eli Crews (Deerhoof, Rogue Wave) last year and put the album out themselves in limited quantity. The new Plug Research edition features two additional tracks and new artwork, and will be available on vinyl. -Andy Lambert
The multi-talented Venezuelan American singer Devendra Banhart has dropped his eighth album, Mala, whose eclectic tunes diffuse a laid-back indie rock sound. Although happily engaged, the singer delivers varied tracks with a generally bittersweet outlook on love.
The soothing “Daniel” kicks off with gentle vocals and a French bistro-lounge vibe, followed by the dreamy, airy tribute to 12th century German nun Hildegard von Bingen… who turns VJ. “Never Seen Such Good Things” packs the album’s funniest couplet, as the Spanish-sung “Mi Negrita” adds some Latin flavor to the mix. Banhart duets with fiancée Ana Kraš in the multi-layered, ironically semi-cruel track “Your Fine Petting Duck,” which eventually transitions to a Pop-based number complete with German lyrics. Yet even his shorter pieces intrigue, as seen via the beautiful instrumental interlude “The Ballad of Keenan Milton” and the lyrically bleak “A Gain.” While “Won’t You Come Over” and “Hatchet Wound” figure as decent romantic jams, the one that easily takes the cake is the breathtakingly hypnotizing “Won’t You Come Home.” Nevertheless, the album closes on a somber note, with Banhart chanting “I can’t keep myself from evil” in the creepy “Taurobolium.”
Neither sappy nor excessively eccentric, Mala faithfully entails genre-defying experimentation and signature dose of quirkiness that fans will eat right up. – Natacha Pavlov
San Francisco based experimental indie rock band, Tartufi, will be releasing their fourth full length album as they break an almost three year span of silence after releasing their last studio effort, an EP entitled, The Goodwill of The Scar. In celebration of the March 26th release of their new album, These Factory Days, Tartufi has shared a new single entitled, Underwater. This seasoned Bay Area trio will also be playing several tour dates across the United States, and will end their tour in San Francisco with their official album release event at the Brick and Mortar Music Hall on April 26th, exactly a month after the album’s release date.
These Factory Days is dramatic and superfluously elegant. Make sure you check out the album’s new single, Underwater, and buy a copy of These Factory Days, which will make for a great addition to your music collection.

Monday night’s intimate benefit show for Adobe Books left everyone who attended much better for the wear. A combined sense of revelry and urgency permeated San Francisco’s Public Works and congealed into a series of inspired performances. Cozy acoustic contributions from both Van and Adam Stephens interposed the kinetic atmospherics supplied by The Tambo Rays and The Dodos. Each act was punctuated by an alluring panorama of wall projection eye candy, and between sets DJ Andy Cabic spun the greatest tracks you’ve never heard from a collection too easy to envy.
Adobe enthusiast Tiffany Sainz grew inspired to organize the event at seeing the names of past performers scrawled on the shop’s walls. Many San Francisco artists harbor formative memories attached to Adobe, including stalwart indie duo The Dodos. Guitarist/Vocalist Meric Long once lived across the street from the iconic bookseller, where he fondly recalls gigging early in his career. Drummer Logan Kroeber once heard the worst bassline of all time at Adobe, a memory he narrated with high regard and which speaks to the shop’s reputation as a source for the genuine. The Dodos returned from a European tour just days before the event, and despite the jet lag put on a staggering performance filled with new material. They’ve finished recording a new LP, which I’m told we can expect this August.
The Save Adobe Books Indiegogo campaign concludes Friday, March 15th. If you were unable to attend the benefit show, it’s not too late to contribute! -Andy Lambert
Oakland based songwriter/producer Wallpaper. became a viable music industry success after singning with L.A. Reid and Epic Records last year. Wallpaper.
