Tomorrow night, Kymberli’s Music Box Presents and The Night Light in Oakland will be hosting a killer neo psych lineup. With performances by up and coming local musical outfits, Down and Outlaws with their heavy psych rock aesthetic and energetic live show and the melodious mod rock group, The Electric Magpie, whose reminiscent, 60s revivalist sound seems to be filtered directly through a time machine, this show is not to be missed. 

Salt Lake City based sextet, Super 78 will also be playing the show. Their mashed-up qualities results the creation of a New Order-gone-Gang of Four musical vibe. The lo-fi group will share the bill with the one and only, Kirpatrick Thomas of Cowboy-badboys Spindrift. He’ll be lending his killer baritone voice to his own solo acoustic psych-cowboy songs. It will be an amazing performance to experience.

As you may or may have not heard, The Deli Magazine San Francisco is spearheading a series of shows at the DNA Lounge. For the very first show (after our Riot Grrrl party we threw at SUB/Mission in February) April 18, we’ve got an excellent lineup of local bands consisting of Modern Man, Buzzmutt and Baus.

Baus is an Oakland band that made waves last month with the release of their first full-length, Idol Minds. The band blends elements of post-punk and no wave to create truly jagged and abrasive tunes. Buzzmutt is a band from San Francisco wh playing psych-tinged noise rock. And headlining is Modern Man, an Oakland-based band that weaves together drudgingly dark shoegaze. Last year the band came out with an awesome tape entitled, Small Waves.

A new era of reinvented garage rock is upon us, and there’s no better musical example that represents this statement than San Fran based group, Vulture Legs. Bearing bluesy garage vibes, their four-song EP Crawl With Me ranges in sound reminiscent of a cooled-off Black Keys and a cleaned-up version of FIDLAR.

Organ overtones in No Game throwback their sound to the 60’s, with poetically blunt lyrics (mean on the streets/tryna sell some happiness/woman on the corner, man did you see her? /no she’s not your ordinary girl). With Me Girl leads with a strong guitar interlude, as lyrics plead for a chance with the opposite sex (Won’t you take a ride with me girl/I can show you things girl). Read Between The Lines is filled with fast-paced guitar riffs and battering drum beats as vocals dance up and down the melodies. Citing "a tasty casserole" as an influence on their Facebook bio, the tastiness is inevitably apparent in their first release. We can expect great things from Vulture Legs. –Kat Collins

Down Dirty Shake is headling another San Francisco show. This time, they’ll be playing with Gainsville based Ancient River and California Raga Association, formallly the Brooklyn Raga Association. This is going to be a classic psych revival show with diverse interpretations of the genre being expressed by each band. Down Dirty Shake plays psych-soul, with a heavy and stylistic resemblence to The Doors. Ancient River is more Pink Floyd-esque garage, gritty sound that drive, and the California Raga Association brings a roots version of psych rock to the table.

San Francisco based neo psych-revivalist and Bay Area based music legend, Joel Gion is beginning to gain momentum with his solo music project, Joel Gion & the Primary Colors. With a hand full of local shows under his belt, Gion continues to emerge with the premiere of his new music video, Overthrow. The video is a reflection of the washed and colorful track that highlights Joel’s whispered shoegaze vocals and Ryan Van Kriedt‘s unique and haunting audial production style. Members of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Federale, Asteroid #4 and Dead Skeletons lend a hand to this sensuous track.

The video (created by Damien Taylor) is completely trippy and portrays a visual homage to psychedelic culture and rock and roll awesomeness. Look out for this track, which is set for release on 7" and download cards on April 22. Gion’s new full length album is titled, Apple Bonkers and is set to emerge onto the scene this summer. -je

San Francisco based Electro Noir Pop band, no:carrier will be embarking on a west coast mini tour upon the release of their new album, Wisdom and Failure. The album is an experimental euro-pop album that is unique and titillating to the ears. It’s always cool to come across music that reflects and international sound and vibe. If one thing’s for sure, we at the Deli Magazine San Francisco can’t get enough of Quaaludes and The Younger Lovers. Quaaludes played our first Deli sponsored event of the season, so we were thrilled when we heard that The Younger Lovers, Quaaludes, Bad Daddies and Yi would be playing a show at the Hemlock Tavern tonight.

Yi is an Oakland based band that plays jagged-sounding punk. Recently, they released a track from their upcoming album, Crying called "Going Dumb." It has the perfect amount of fuzz and noise. Bad Daddies is an East Bay band that plays loud and fast punk. Expect a new 7-inch from the band on Negative Fun Records coming in June! And next is Quaaludes – this girl band plays a mixture of riot grrrl, no wave and grunge and are known for putting on a raucous show! And last but not least are The Younger Lovers, an Oakland based band that features Gravy Train!!! alum Brontez Purnell. Playing a form of fast and snotty lo-fi, be sure not to miss out on this show! –Erin Dage

Fresh out of their van, San Francisco’s Burnt Ones are back home from another US tour, and they’re finally ready to celebrate the release of their latest LP, Gift at Brick and Mortar Music Hall this Saturday, April 12. After a self-imposed six-month hiatus from playing live gigs, the band is making up for lost time with a fresh perspective on its music and live performances.

Though most listeners are familiar with the garage glam sound of the band’s first two albums, particularly their pop masterpiece single, Gonna Listen to T. Rex (All Night Long) off of their debut album, Burnt Ones have pushed passed conventions of the traditional garage rock sound, forfeiting digestibility in favor of creating more well rounded material.

For Gift, the band channeled its erratic live energy in the studio, bundling their pop melodies inside warm distorted layers of dissonance. Fluctuating rhythms lend each tune capricious vibes, and the introduction of a drum machine tinges the record with foreign electronic flavors. Mark Tester’s familiar vocals, particularly during those hushed and subtle tremolo moments, keep the songs anchored and facetted to the band’s roots. Gift, which was released on Castle Face Records on March 25th, without a doubt can still be recognized as a Burnt Ones record, but this time around, Mark and company challenge listeners to pay closer attention, and to actively listen and locate the infectious elements that are always at play in Burnt Ones’s songs.

If you accept the challenge, come out to Brick and Mortar this Saturday for the Burnt Ones’s record release show. The event will feature performances by Useless Eaters, Violent Change and Al Lover. – Lauren Espina 

Tonight at Thee Parkside, it’s all about manifestations of bands from the past. Break Anchor is headlining the event with ToyGuitar and Civil War Rust.

Civil War Rust is a pop-punk band from the East Bay. Drawing from contemporary and not-so-contemporary bands such as Dead To Me, Jawbreaker and Crimpshrine, they play music containing equal parts of self deprecation, positivity and snottiness (we mean that in he most respectful way!). Also playing is Toyguitar, who is reconfiguration of ’90s East Bay punk band, One Man Army. They have a self-titled 7-inch on Adeline Records that leans more in the direction of power pop. And last but certainly not least is Break Anchor, a Detroit-based band and the product of former Suicide Machines vocalist Jason Navarro. This project is seen as a Navarro’s saving grace from depression and addiction that he endured. It’s melodic, heartfelt, and most definitely influenced by 924 Gilman bands of the ’90s. –Erin Dage

Kiss them goodbye: San Francisco’s (nearly) all-female David Bowie cover band, Lady Stardust is playing their last show tonight at Thee Parkside with Purple Heart and Bones of a Feather.

Opening will be a Bones of a Feather, a band from San Francisco that plays soulful covers spanning many genres. Also joining in on the fun is Purple Heart, a band known for playing Heart and Prince covers. Here’s hoping that they’ll play "Raspberry Beret"!

And last but certainly not least, Lady Stardust will perform. The band will be playing the Bowie’s magnum opus, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, from start to finish. –Erin Dage
