The San Jose based indie rock band, A Yawn Worth Yelling has released a single entitled Start Somewhere in anticipation of their upcoming 2015 release. The band’s new EP, Play Pretend is due out on September 18th.

Start Somewhere is an intricate indie rock-pop track that is creatively layered with electro-acoustic instrumentals and coated with thoughtful lyrics. Lend your ear to this song and make sure you support this Bay Area band at their live performances as well!

The San Francisco based music project, Split Screens has released a free download and bonus track from their LP, Before The Storm! The track is entitled, Black Pines and we’re super excited to premiere it!

Inspired by a childhood spent in New York’s remote Catskill Mountains, ‘Black Pines’ is the brand new single from Split Screens and it’s a track that offers the kind of woozy Summer retreat that instantly captivates. Front man Jesse Cafiero’s radiant vocal guides the track through three minutes of weighty pop music, shaped by a West Coast glow that is palpably invigorating. Impressive in scope and assured in delivery, ‘Black Pines’ is a further step forward from a songwriter who continues to grow and flourish with each release.

The world’s first solar powered mobile music studio and performance session platform–will host the second installment of their San Francisco Artist House during Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, where they’ll be hosting close to 20 one-of-a-kind performances from festival and local SF acts, plus a live showcase, from Thursday, August 6th through Sunday, August 9th.

The Artist House will serve as a retreat from the festival chaos and guests to this invite-online event will experience a kick-off party, live performances, photo-booths, talent gifting and interactive brand experiences; such as listening stations, games and art. Throughout each day bands will come through the Artist House where they will eat, drink, play games, charge their phones, network with other bands, interact and be gifted with products from cool brands, and record live sessions. The evening of Saturday the 8th will turn into a live music showcase that will go into the later hours. San Francisco Artist House (271 Dore St, San Francisco).

A Message from Viracocha:

So as most of you know by now, we have closed Viracocha. Not temporarily, but completely, this time. We begin dismantling and demolition this weekend. However… There is still an opportunity to save the Basement Performance Level, and pass it along to the perspective new tenants. But…. we’ve only got TONIGHT! (Monday, August 3rd)

There is a group who wish to save the performance space, and keep it designated for public artistic programming, of all sorts, but the decision to move forward, or ‘call it quits’, needs an answer by the end of this evening.

There will be a community meeting at Viracocha, at 7:30 pm. The perspective tenant, will be on hand to describe their vision, and business plan, for what will, hopefully, inhabit 998 Valencia. They have some financial backing, but not enough to do it on their own.

If you, or anyone you know, might be interested in investing with them, in an effort to keep another SF art space in existence, this is the time. 7:30PM, Tonight.

The San Francisco based classic soul revivalist band, Gene Washington & The Ironsides will be performing at Slim’s in support of the rapidly emerging soul/big band The Suffers. If you like insanely large music ensembles, energetic soul music and nostalgic experiences, check this show out. The San Jose based band, Los Hot Boxers will be rounding out the bill with a unique fusion of doo-wap, Jazz and Latin musical influences.

This would be the perfect show to take your S/O out for a night of dinner and dancing. It can’t always be about you, of course there’s no reason why you wouldn’t have a BLAST getting down to The Suffers and all the amazing music you’re going to experience on August 4th at Slim’s??

The San Francisco based burlesque -heavy rock band, Kat Robichaud and The Darling Misfits have released a brand new music video. Apple Pie and The Knife is an anthem that fights the unfair epidemic of "slut-shaming" (accusing a woman of being over-sexualized for dressing or acting in a certain way, and sometimes, for no reason at all).

"The Apple Pie and The Knife" is based on my experiences as an aggressive female rocker on The Voice. I behaved the same as some of my male counterparts, but because I’m a woman, it was the double-standard and I got called out, mostly by women, for being boisterous. I was too aggressive on stage. My shorts were too short. "Who did I think I was?" I made the video because I want little girls growing up to know that they don’t have to fit into this subservient box and that can be themselves without questioning themselves, regardless of their sex."  -Kat Robichaud

Robichaud made it into the top 10 on the popular televised singing competition, The Voice. She apparently didn’t have an amazing experience on the show, but we still love you, Kat!

You can see Kat Robichaud and The Darling Misfits perform live at The Stork Club in Oakland TONIGHT with VOWWS, Survival Guide and Sister Grizzly. This is an amazing line up that will be performing at a grungy rock club in the Oakland. We can guess that the show is going to be raw, in your face and completely unpredictable. That’s what rock and roll is all about!

We’re excited to premiere the live music video for Travis Hayes‘ song, Towns Like These! The video features Hayes’ full band, Travis Hayes and the Young Daze and the vocals of Emily Whitehurst.

Anyone who knows about Travis Hayes‘ contributions to the local music community would find his "Ode to the Bay Area" folk ballad, Towns Like These very consistent with his actions and passion for local live music. If you don’t know anything about his work, Hayes has been a booker and live music curator for the local music venue, Neck of the Woods. He’s also been great at connecting solo singer/songwriters with opportunities through booking and staying active in songwriter social media groups.

The video was filmed by Jared Swanson at our Great American Music Hall show last month on Saturday, June 27th. The audio was recorded by Seth Lael. The song "Towns Like These" is about traveling around the U.S.A. and constantly hearing people compare San Francisco to places like Austin, TX or Brooklyn, NY. I don’t believe that to be true. Amnesia‘s Tuesday night monthly residency will be hosted by the San Francisco based psych folk artist, Split Screens (aka Jesse Cafiero) for the month of August. Split Screens is a relatively new music project that we’ve watched grow over the last couple of years. It’s very exciting to see this tenacious musician curate four weeks of music! Make sure you support Amnesia and its great support of artists through its consistant monthly, artist run Tuesday night residency. We’re pleased to share that the Bay Area based band, The Seshen will be hosting a Tuesday night residency at Leo’s in Oakland for the month of September. We know the fall is a few weeks away but it’s good always to know what’s coming your way as the seasons change!

It’s no secret: The Seshen loves Oakland. Not only is it the band’s home base, it’s their community and serves as the inspiration for their ever-evolving, celebrated sound. So, when Leo’s asked if they’d like to curate and host a Tuesday night residency this September, the band was quick to jump at the chance to give a little back to the place they call home.

The Love, Oakland residency features four shows where The Seshen teams up with other notable Bay Area bands to share the bill. Each night will have its own distinct flavor and surprises, but there is a common thread throughout: every show has been designed to celebrate Oakland’s vibrant music scene and diverse culture.

The San Francisco based singer/songwriter, indie pop musician Luke Sweeney will be completing his residency with Miller Carr at the Make Out Room in San Francisco on Sunday, July 26th.

For the final event, Tim Cohen of Magic Trick and The Fresh & Onlys will be performing a solo set. The Chico, California based soul singer/songwriter Pat Hull will be playing the line up with musician Nicholas Campbell. This is going to be a very intimate event, showcasing some of the Bay Area’s best male vocalists and guitar players.

In this rocky time in the San Francisco’s arts and music scene, we should certainly pull together and support our hard working local musicians! Artists like Luke Sweeney and Tim Cohen have had staying power in the Bay Area over the years, surviving venues getting shut down, neighborhoods morphing and the depletion of resources for independent local musicians.

The best we can do for our community is show up, have fun, encourage our local artists and buy drinks and merch!

We’re so into Laying Down Rock, the new single from the art rock duo, DRINKS, a new music project consisting of the San Francisco based musician, Tim Presley also known as White Fence and the lovely, Wales native Cate Le Bon. If you like Violent Femmes, the Magnetic Fields, Talking Heads and oddly composed art rock in general, DRINKS’ sense of humor and quirkiness is going to quickly earn your admiration.

Presley and Le Bon switch duties as lead vocalists from one track to another. Their previous single, the title track of their upcoming album, Hermits on Holiday had Le Bon sharing her angelic voice without any presence of Presley’s vocal talents.

The tongue and cheek-ness of Laying Down Rock is only appropriately enjoyed with a slightly sadistic grin drawn across your cheeks, as Tim Presley’s off putting, slightly dark confidence and vocal expression is funny, but also a bit sinister. That said, if you listen closely you’ll hear a glimmer of hope and a moral in Presley’s troubadour-esque declaration that affirms that true love does exist. Take a listen and look out for DRINKS’ upcoming album, Hermits On Holiday, which is due out on August 21st through Birth Records & Heavenly Recordings.
