PREMIERE: WE THE WILD – “Exodus and Decay”

Posted on:

Portland isnt’ exactly known for it’s hardcore scene. As a town that’s had indie music on lock for years, the underlying scene doesn’t get nearly the credit it should, especially when compared to how thriving it is elsewhere.

Aside from the genre’s suppression, the obvious slow death of the music community as a whole has left many somewhat at a loss. Locals We the Wild found inspiration out of this, using the current state as fuel for writing their upcoming debut full length From the Cities We Fled, to be released in August.

Today we’re premiering "Exodus and Decay," which pulls direct influence from what’s happening all around us. Speaking of the track, the band says:

"’Exodus and Decay’ was written about the alarming state of portland’s local hardcore scene, and the attitude of apathy that locals have taken to our passion for the music we create. Our city is letting what we’ve put all our heart and soul into simply rot away in the streets. And bands are finding themselves seeking opportunities in other cities with audiences that provide the support and attentiveness that we need to sustain ourselves.”

PREMIERE: Casey Burge – “Comin’ Fulfilled”

Posted on:

We’d like to start your morning off with a fresh track from a familiar face and a new label. Casey Burge, mostly known for his involvement in his other bands Minden and No Lala, has released a solo track on new artist development group and record label Golden Brown, based in Portland.

A total of three PDX artists, including Burge, made it onto the first in the label’s international Perfectly Toasted Compilation series and their debut release, Perfectly Toasted, Vol. 1. His track "Comin’ Fulfilled" opens up the compilation and gives a great introduction to the style and feel the label is going for-ultimate chill.

Make your gloomy morning a little more enjoyable by giving Casey’s song a listen below and sneaking a peek at the rest of the Perfectly Toasted, Vol. 1, which comes out June 17th.

Wave Action will ride their way into your hearts

Posted on:

With no shortage of bands that fall under the surf or garage rock veil to give your attention to, sifting through what’s worthy of your time can be exhaustively consuming. Bands that find ways to stand out from the bunch might be few and far between, but noobies Wave Action are already carving out their niche quickly and specifically.

Though they formed just early last year, Wave Action already have a considerable amount of moves under their belt, from their numerous near packed shows with local acts of varied genres, to their well received debut album and an upcoming tour in support of it to boot.

Pulling elements from post-punk, psych and indie to build their own special recipe for the new archetype of the styles, Wave Action both as people and as a band are hard not to fall for.

Their tour kickoff show is this Friday (the same day as our next Deli Portland Presents showcase!) at the Clinton St. Theater. So for $8, it’d be worth wishing them a safe trip after our showcase is done. We’ll miss them.

PREMIERE: Korgy & Bass – “Bernieman 2016”

Just because the Oregon Primaries have passed doesn’t mean political fever has in any way tempered down. Bernie Sanders won the hearts of Oregonians and many aware voters across the United States alike, and in celebration of his desired socially justified campaign, Korgy & Bass are releasing a new song and video in his name.

Today we bring you "Bernieman 2016," a delightful trip hop ditty with an equally tripped out video. Pulling audio samples from some of Bernie’s most beloved, exciteable speeches, "Bernieman 2016" pumps you up for the presidential hopeful in a way unlike any other political involvement tactic, using lo-fied beats and swirls of colors to stimulate the conscious mind.

Their new sh*t is dropping on Cavity Search Records, with a release show happening at the Alberta St. Pub on June 22nd with Catherine Feeny and Chris Johnedis so check it out.

Start your morning out with Korgy & Bass’ chill sounds below and remember to stay woke.

Come hang with Strange Wool and Daisy Deaths this Thursday!

Posted on:

Thursdays are a lot like Fridays now, when it comes to having a grip of cool things happening around town. This Thursday, New York’s the Numerators are touring through town and they’ve got two Portland delights bringing the local flavor to the show.

Both Strange Wool and Daisy Deaths have been coming up hot in the local scene and as former Deli Portland poll participants, we enjoy everything they both do.

We’re excited to learn that Daisy Deaths is working on a heavier sounding follow up to their awesome Black and White EP, which will feature a whole new talented lineup.

Strange Wool have also seen some adjustments in lineup, but that hasn’t stopped them from playing a grip of shows around town and just being overall chill dudes.

The show is coming up this Thursday at the Know, so come out and enjoy some live tunes to ease you into the weekend.

PREMIERE: The Toads – “I’m a Toad”

Coming out onto the scene with a fervent drive to dominate the pop punk world with excitable power, The Toads have done a lot with themselves in their first year as a band. Since their formation early last year, they’ve recorded a full length, performed upwards of 60 shows and have a couple music videos to tout. Today, we’re presenting you with another one.

With shots filmed around the Pearl, "I’m a Toad" is a fun video showing the three toadies, guitarist Matt Kane, bassist Matt Dinaro and drummer Mitch Gonzales run somewhat of a muck through Saturday Market, donning all white a la Andrew W.K. Their color performance scenes were filmed at the Khao San restaurant, with the restaurant owner Bud funding the video and even making a guest appearance chauffeuring the trio around in a Tuk Tuk.

The Toads have got a show coming up on the 28th with Daisy Deaths and Lord Becky at the Turn Turn Turn. "I’m a Toad" is both the kind of song and video that makes you want to jump up, act crazy and freak a few people out. Give it a watch below.

Catch Roselit Bone while you can!

Posted on:

Just in case you haven’t heard, country music is alive and well in Portland. We’re not talking about that American Idol mess your mother probably listens to. We’re talking the dusty steel, brooding Americana that keeps the genre a contender for space on your playlist.

Both Roselit Bone and Jenny Don’t & the Spurs can turn even the most stubborn anti-country music fan into an appreciator of that twang. The two just release a split a couple weeks ago and while Jenny Don’t & the Spurs have already hit the road for tour, you’ve still got a couple chances to see Roselit Bone before they leave for theirs in August.

They’ve got a show coming up tomorrow at Bunk Bar with Abronia and Tucson’s Ohioan. You really can’t miss it, since that second chance won’t be coming up until right before they hit the dusty trails.

Saturday Night Sounds: Small Million – “Sleep Long”

Posted on:

Sleep is a cool mistress, forever beckoning you to disregard all plans and responsibilities with her seduction of comfort. The latest track from Small Million, titled "Sleep Long," premiered earlier this week on The Wild Honey Pie and is coming off their upcoming June 4th debut, the Before the Fall EP. Malachi Graham’s varied harmonies atop Ryan Linder’s cleanly produced instrumentation make it perfect for a Saturday night spent cuddled up in bed with you know who.

Their album release party will also be on June 4th at the Secret Society with Leo Islo and Mothertapes, but if you’re really itching for some of them you can preorder Before the Fall on their Bandcamp page for $5.

Friends of Noise seek to create a permanent all ages haven

Posted on:

The lack of all ages spaces in Portland is an obvious problem. Sure, we’ve got Anarres Infoshop and the select house show venues that will host an all ages show every once in awhile, but with the wealth of youth seeking to engage in the city’s music community the present options just aren’t enough. That’s why Friends of Noise, a group of music community members with all sorts of knowledge and experience in the music game, are acting to change that.

The group was built by a collection of non-profits and leaders in the music community, including participation from the likes of Music in the Schools, PDX Pop Now!, XRAY.FM, KBOO and My Voice Music to name a few, with growing support. Members are collaborating all efforts in attempts to maintain Portland’s ecclectic and special artistic community through finding opportunities to integrate youth into producing, performing and being able to safely gather at music and art spaces and events.

In the quest to create a permanent space, Friends of Noise will be hosting four satellite shows held in each sector of the city. The first one, on Sunday, May 22nd at Los Prados Event Hall in St. Johns, is a hip hop show with some of Portland’s finest underlying acts. Gem Dynasty, Drex Porter, Neo G Yo and the Doo Doo Funk All Stars will all be playing the kick off event. Tickets are $5 for youths (or $8 for two young’ns) and $10 for adults, with music beginning at 6:30pm.

Friends of Noise recognizes the kids in this town are the only hope we have of keeping our creativity alive and by trying their best to make sure arts and music can thrive despite the changing atmosphere in Portland, we just may have hope.

PREMIERE: KULULULU – “#14”

KULULULU are that kind of band that cover all bases during a performance. Not only is their music premium for jumping around and getting a bit crazy, but their costumes, crowd enthusing dancers and interesting monologues keep you glued and entertained throughout their whole set.

Their new video, "#14," couldn’t be more fitting a video for them to release. Simple and somewhat complex, the video centers around a creepy mask and dancing around in a parking garage. Its artsy, its awesome, and it’ll have you anticipating what they’re going to do next. You’ll see.

Check out the strange intrigue of "#14" below.

Hear Fog Father’s Newest, “Trapped in a Web”

After sharing their tripped out video for "RIP" with us a couple months ago, Fog Father has now released the first single from their upcoming full length The Plague of Fantasies. "Trapped in a Web" is art pop at its finest, swirling between psychedelic, electronic and indie rock tendencies as singer Bryson Hansen croons.

The Plague of Fantasies came from the roots of a collection of songs performed solely by Hansen, before the rest of the band came to be. Once the band fully formed the songs were redone to include everyone’s instrumentation, elevating each track to its full potential.

The Plague of Fantasies is set to drop within the next couple of months and for a peek into the full product, listen to "Trapped in a Web" below.

Saturday Night Sounds: Naked Hour – “Crossfade”

Posted on:

Everyone’s got a song, or maybe a whole album, that soundtrack their transition from the younger years into adulthood. But to me making your own soundtrack is a whole other story, and it’s one the kids of Naked Hour happen to be writing. The trio are gearing to drop their sophomore effort Always On The Weekend, which flourished from biting old memories.

The second single they’ve shared from their upcoming album, "Crossfade," is a story told in that same vein, backed by simplistic instrumentation that carries it through to the crashing release of the song finish. It’s the kind of track you listen to when you’re feeling nostalgic, and helps you shake that forlorned feeling.

Always On The Weekend is due out at the end of June via Good Cheer Records
