Album Review: Everything Under the Sun – Jukebox the Ghost

Posted on:

The new effort by Philly/NYC via DC trio Jukebox The Ghost puts a glossy sheen on their already sugar sweet pop creations and puts this rising band in the position to expand their fan base beyond indie favorites to mainstream heartthrobs. Their sound is consistent with past releases in its reactive, pogoing compositions that highlight frontman Ben Thornewill’s theatric tenor, but their second release, Everything Under the Sun, manages to musically compliment his voice more effectively than past releases. The ability to fully produce the already large sound of this power trio ratchets the emotion of the new release to more Queen performance art than snarky piano pop.

The album hooks the listener with galloping “Schizophrenia” that bounces through its verse-chorus structure and introduces the bands musical skills along with its tongue in cheek wit. The life within Thornewill’s voice is endearing in its buoyancy, like in the frantic synth of “Half Crazy” with its youthful and catchy feel. The only downside is that sometimes the polished work can blend too well in mainstream radio programming potentially rendering it disposable. However, the guys do show much versatility especially in the beautifully delicate standout “So Let Us Create” where the band seems to rely less on their natural upbeat energy putting all their efforts towards the movement and feeling of the song itself. The multiple glockenspiels and melismatic refrain create one of the largest sounds on the album. There is also not a problem with a band investing itself in brisk piano confections the likes of Ben Folds, who seems to be an obvious but apt comparison, and Jukebox the Ghost does so various times in Everything Under the Sun, but none as effective as closing track “Nobody” that swings and struts to the album’s finish line with added trumpets and surprising reserve.

Everything Under the Sun at times seems to question and try and resolve, but at other times seems to simply concern itself with the big pop hooks. While I prefer the former to the latter, it is an album that highlights the band’s talent and shows glimpses of a unit ready to step out on the big mainstream stage. (But I’m always weary of that stage turning bright young talent into disposable pop stars.)

Grimace Federation Open for Tortoise at WCL Sept. 8!

Posted on:

Legendary post rockers Tortoise are in town tonight at World Café Live. I’m happy to see them matched up with one of my favorite local post rock outfits Grimace Federation. It’ll also probably be the last time you’ll be able to catch them before their CD release party at Johnny Brenda’s on October 29 w/West Philadelphia Orchestra and Univox so get there early and catch their set because I know that the Grimace fellas will be pumped up to be sharing the stage (and hopefully a joint) with their heroes. Party Photographers and Moon Women Catchin’ a Buzz at KFN Sept. 8

Posted on:

There looks like a seriously fun show tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. Local post-punkers Party Photographers and Moon Women will be sandwiched by ROIR’s Nashville garage-punk power trio Bad Cop and Fat Possum’s Alabama indie popsters Thomas Function. You’ve probably been hearing plenty of buzz around town lately about Party Photographers’ Jesus and Mary Chain-esque sound. Well, isn’t it time for you to check out the buzz from their amps for yourself? Newcomers on the local music scene Moon Women should be providing plenty of buzz on their own having already opened for Wavves and The Buzzcocks. And their video below for “Listen Closely” with its dark Cure-ish flare will grab some attention. BTW: If a spontaneous shot of childbirth is something that sounds unappealing to you, then watch out! It caught me off guard. Ha! – Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ (Party Photographers’ Photo by Sam Levine) – H.M. Kauffman

Trippy Debut Video from Golden Ages!

Posted on:

Below is a trippy debut video from Golden Ages for “Everything Will Be Alright” off of their EP Sitting Softly in the Sea. It was directed by LA-based Bryan Schlam. The track gets your heart thumping, while the visuals leave you in a psychedelic haze drowning in feelings of loneliness and isolation. (Do we need some psychiatric help? Sometimes.) Golden Ages is working on a new album and planning some live performances locally as well as regionally. – The Deli Staff

Schoolly D Chillin’ at Tin Angel Sept. 4

Posted on:

Veteran rapper Schoolly D is bringin’ his versatile and seasoned flow to the intimate Tin Angel tonight. Schoolly is a native of Philly and has been name dropped as an influence by everyone from Ice-T to MC Chris and Chuck D. You might know Schoolly best these days by his occasional involvement in Aqua Teen Hunger Force providing narration and one of the better theme songs of current television shows. While his style has been noted as pre-gangster rap containing urban violence and dirty realism, Schoolly now has run the gambit of hip hop through eight studio albums over 15 years and has recently released his newest album and first in over a decade, International Supersport. On the topic of supersports, Schoolly also claims to have invented snowboarding in Philly. This venue is really tiny for such a legend, so make your way to the Tin Angel tonight to get your fill of some Funk N’ Pussy, probably more of the former than the latter. But I’m guessing that there will be plenty of the latter skankin’ up the streets of Old City. Good luck. Tin Angel, 20 S. 2nd St., 8pm, $12, 21+ – Adam G.

The Divine Lorraine Open Again at The Ox Sept. 4

Posted on:

The record release party for Brooklyn indie rockers Backwords isn’t the only reason to catch tonight’s show at The Ox. Folk music heartthrobs and relative newcomers, The Divine Lorraine will be opening with an acoustic set that’s jam packed with violin, banjo, and upright bass. It also features the panty-dropping vocals of Ryan Belski and occasional songbird accompaniment of Liz Boyd. The band has been working on a upcoming album and should be unleashing plenty of new tunes. Also on the lineup is impressive acoustic artists Norwegian Arms, who have some beautiful tunes up on their Bandcamp page including a five song EP titled Louise. Weekend Warrior, Sept. 3 – 6

Posted on:

It’s Labor Day weekend, and the weather predictions are lookin’ quite fine so a BBQ is most likely eminent in your future. While you are probably wavering between catching the FREE live performance by Free Energy at The Piazza or making the trek to the Camden Waterfront for Red Bull’s Flugtag competition on Saturday, we’d like to offer you a fun First Friday alternative for this evening that certainly won’t interfere with your plans (well, that is if you don’t tie one on too hard with all the free beer that comes with your measly $5 admission). Our favorite grunge-y dream pop outfit Creepoid will be putting on an intimate concert tonight at Little Berlin. It’s also doubling as a video shoot for the hard-partying crew so dress to impress (not really necessary but you may be immortalized on film or laughed at privately by the band while viewing the footage). They’ll be joined by Black Hawk and Exploding World as well as artwork by Zodiac Down. Little Berlin, 119 W. Montgomery Ave., 7pm, $5, All Ages

Have a Cup of Joe w/The Circadian Rhythms at Green Line Café Sept. 3

Posted on:

Somewhere between swing and Americana, local folksters The Circadian Rhythms cook up bluesy ballads that with ease impress. Mixing a laundry list of instruments with creative deliberation, the band is like mash-up of Glenn Miller with beardos like Sam Beam. Vocals suggest hard times, long days, and nights spent drinking whiskey. Sounding older than their years, The Circadian Rhythms revive the rugged swagger of saloon goers long past with the ivory chords of “Stealin’ Honey” and the shuffling snare of “Sweet Lovin’ Mama”.  Charming yet pastoral, these urban troubadours’ ballads will make you sing la-di-da. They’ll be matched with the experimental pop of Motorcycle Maus and the chamber pop of The New Heaven & The New Earth as well as Swedish indie rockers The Horror The Horror. Green Line Café, 4426 Locust St., 7pm, $5 – $7 donation, All Ages – Dianca Potts

Arrah and the Ferns CD Release Party at The North Star Sept. 3

Posted on:

Lead singer Arrah Fisher is reminiscent to Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino in that her strong vocals and ruminations on miscommunication with lovers past are often the focal point of her songs. Her band,

Arrah and the Ferns , is more upbeat indie pop than beach punk, with softer vocals and bouncy guitar lines. Materialized at an open mic in 2005 with newfound friend Carl Stovner, “the Ferns” have since added and lost members, but their new lineup will be ready tonight for the CD release party for their sophomore album All the Bad in One Place at the North Star Bar as well as their upcoming east coast tour this fall. North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 9pm, $8, 21+ – Katie Bennett

Swing by or tune in and you’ll be treated to some atmospheric folk from her latest release the optimistically titled EP Everyone Will Take You In, which was inspired by her hometown.
