Thank You’s Upcoming Release

Posted on:

Thank You is a trio from Baltimore whose urgent collision of rhythm, melody, and noise has placed them at the creative center of today’s Baltimore renaissance. With their new album Golden Worry, Thank You has carved out a new sound drawing inspiration from the innovative post-punk of This Heat and Swell Maps and the polyrhythmic attack of The Ex and Dog Faced Hermans.

Golden Worry was recorded by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, TV on the Radio), and will be coming out January 25. In the meantime, check out their video featuring B-more dance troupe, Bobby.

NYC Artists on the rise: Young Magic

Posted on:

Young Magic is the newest addition to the Carpark family. Hailing from the east coast of Australia and currently residing in New York, Young Magic is Isaac, a portable studio, and friends. These songs were recorded over the last six months in various places around the world: old spy bases near Berlin, empty rooms in Iceland, kids’ playgrounds in Melbourne, and no water flats in New York. These various locales are sampled and integrated into the fabric of Young Magic’s sound: the fluidity and songwriting of late 60’s psychedelic soul combined with modern-day beat making. We dig, dudes!

CD Review: Elika’s new CD “Snuggle Bunnies”

Posted on:

Personal relationships are the endgame for most people. The search to connect your innermost feelings with another person is what Elika‘s new album “Snuggle Bunnies” often hints at. At the core of the lyrics are emotional ties that revolve around the struggle of the human being’s fight for happiness on earth, and the band’s wide palette of sounds complements these lyrics. Released on Peruvian label Automatic, classic Elika resounds on the 1st single “Summer”. Shoegazer-style soundscapes are scattered throughout the album, but it’s a simple plaintive side that finally emerges in the highlight song “Death and Avalanches”. Pure talent and a bare acoustic guitar set in motion resounding, deep feelings when singer Eva relies on just her voice and her metaphors. “The Darkside” musically reflects its lyrical counterparts, revealing 2 songs in one and releasing its somber verses instantly into an uplifting arpeggiated chorus. The closer “Tidal Wave” is a complete musical movement based on a simple progression, with drums that wash around each other in synch. When it all comes crashing down, you are left to roll in the emotional feedback they create: a symbiotic tie making you wonder what is there left when you’ve relied everything on someone else. – Simon Heggie

What happens when a Cellist, a Frenchman, and a Chilean walk into a Bar? Frenchman Gaetan Bonhomme, friend and fan of Erin and her Cello, took Animator, Andrea Lira, (from Chile), to one of Erin’s shows back in 2009. Andrea loved Erin’s playfulness and charm, and Erin loved Andrea’s adorable animations. The result of this fateful encounter? This sweet video. Erin and her Cello, along with her 5 piece band, will be performing at Rockwood Music Hall, Stage 2 on Saturday, November 20th, 8pm, opening for Caleb Hawley’s CD Release show. You can also catch their Holiday Spectacular at Rockwood, Stage 2, on Monday, December 6th at 8pm. Danni Rosner to Charm IOTA on 11/23

Posted on:

Up and coming singer / songwriter, Danni Rosner will be returning to IOTA after playing several shows in New York City and London to promote her new EP, “On My Way.”  Her song, “In the City” was recently featured on the A&E series, “Teach,” starring Tony Danza which may come as a surprise to many of you – not that a local artist has been featured on cable television – but that Tony Danza is still making television shows.

Rosner’s songs are a mix of soulful blues and jazz ballads processed through catchy pop melodies and cautiously optimistic lyrics about struggling to keep your head above water in the not always friendly pond of modern life.

Catch her with Philadelphia’s Jason Ager on 11/23.  Show starts at 8:30, $10 at the door. –Jarrett B.

Tennis System Leaves Black Cat’s Ears Ringing

Posted on:

When I arrived at Black Cat, I immediately realized I had made a huge mistake.  My earplugs had been left uselessly in the console of my car.  However, I am never one to back down from a good rock show merely to save the waning remnants of my own hearing, and I’m glad I stuck around for this one.  The show started off on a great note when I got my first exposure to The Laughing Man, a band that does for 60’s soul and blues what Vampire Weekend did for world music.  I definitely expect to see more from these guys soon.  Arc in Round from Philly was up next; aptly setting the tone for the very loud session of shoegaze-pocalypse that was to follow.

When Tennis System started into their first song, they were surrounded on stage by spinning green lasers that they swore were unintentional.  However, once their own array of strobe lights began assaulting the crowd, I think they should have embraced the mistake and left the green lasers on.  No mercy.

Just about any review you can find of this band will let you know that they are not quiet.  Between the volume and the lights, this set was a full force assault on the sensory systems of the crowd.  But, what I really enjoyed about Tennis System was that underneath all the (admittedly cool) drones and screaming guitars were catchy songs full of energy; urgent melodies that you couldn’t help but sing along with.  When you hear this band is loud, believe it, but don’t mistake “loud” for “noise.”

Tennis System plays again at The Red Palace on November 30. –Jarrett B.

NYC artists on the rise: Make Out – Debut EP out in 2011.

Posted on:

Make Out is Junior Senior‘s Jesper Mortensen’s new band. After the Danish, London based duo broke up, Mortensen left England for New York to find someone who shared his musical vision. From what we can tell from the only track available online (streaming here) the newly formed band plays energetic guitar rock reminiscent in equal doses of Pixies and Smashing Pumpkins, with maybe a slightly punkier edge – teenagers will probably love this! Debut EP release scheduled for the early spring of 2011.

Home Video can now be considered a mainstay of the NYC electro-rock scene – they have been active since the late 90s and released 2 EPs under Warp Records, a label any electronic act dreams to be signed to. Fans of moody avant-pop a la` Radiohead will find a lot to chew on here, as the band has a ton of quality material evenly spread through their many releases. They are about to celebrate the launch of their 2nd full length album on November 16 with a show at the Mercury Lounge.
