NYC Hip Hop: PremRock and Willie Green release 2nd album at Cameo on 09.28

Posted on:

In their second collaboration, PremRock and Willie Green return with double the ferocity of their previous release, “The Build.” Prem is all about flow this time; he flexes and bends his potent lyricism around Willie’s expert beat-making with a confidence and candor which parallels even the vets he’s conscripted for guest appearances. From the banging crew-track “Hand to be me” (featuring C-Rayz Walz and Soul Khan) to the heartfelt and brutally honest “Move,” this is album is a tour-de-force of lyricism and storytelling. Prem wins over his listeners because he eschews the joke rap that permeates the work of many of his peers. The hallmark of a great MC is to remain compelling while merely being reflective, and this is a skill that Prem demonstrates effortlessly. PremRock and Willie Green will celebrate the release of this self-titled second album this coming Wednesday September 28th at Cameo Lounge in Williamsburg–Fans of real hip hop will be in the building. – BrokeMC

High Places’ new video: “Altos Lugares”

Posted on:

High Places‘ new video features shots of ant colonies crawling around, translucent people and the trippiest pool party ever to accompany their soaring electronic sounds of single "Altos Lugares." Literall the Spanish translation of the band name, "Altos Lugares" is a droning electronic beat with disembodied voices looping over and over again. It’s repetitive but always changing, pulling the listener into a sort of trance. The single comes off their upcoming album Original Colors out October 11 on Thrill Jockey. The release will include a bonus CD with two extended album songs and an exclusive track. They’ll be busy touring Europe this fall, but hopefully they’ll grace the west coast with their presence soon. In the meantime, enjoy the video and pick up the album next month. – Taylor Lampela

Mahogany plays The Deli’s “Dream Pop” CMJ Show, Tue 10.18 at The Delancey with Exitmusic and more

Posted on:

Playing a shoegazer-influenced style they call "Nüdisco", Vltrarock and Echo Deco of the New York and Philadelphia based band Mahogany present a decade of recorded work as evidence. On "One Plus One Equals Three Or More" (one of our favorite songs) an angular bass line drives forward the momentum, as high-hat and snare-heavy percussions rattle along. Distant atmospherics soon work their way into the mix, as do handclaps and quickly strummed high-pitched guitars. The sum effect is one of a hyper funkiness. Vocals are delivered in a mostly male only or blended male-female tandem. "The View From The People Wall" continues the hyper-funk bass guitar with cymbal-emphasized percussion pattern, but features female vocals out front, while "Supervitesse" (embedded video) marshalls the formidable power of Cocteau Twins legend Robin Guthrie on the production chair for a predictably shimmering mix. – Mahogany will be performing at The Deli’s Dream Pop CMJ stage at The Delancey on Tuesday 10.18 with Exitmusic, Ohnomoon and Spanish Prisoners. – Dave Cromwell

Submitted digitally to The Deli SF: The Symbolick Jews – live at Kimos on 09.27

Posted on:

Composed by a beauty and 3 monsters (at least judging from this picture), San Francisco band The Symbolick Jews recently submitted their record digitally to the Deli here, and we have been having some fun with it. Unapologetically but creatively punk, these guys’ songs revive a genre that too often sounds formulaic. Check out this crazy song from their album "Slave to Love", and if you like it go check them out live at Kimo’s on September 27. I should be fun.

Cookies (ex-Mobius Band) specializes in popular music

Posted on:

Born when one third of now defunct The Mobius Band (singer/programmer/ guitarist Ben Sterling) met Melissa Metrick and Ian Ainley, Cookies is a band from New York City specializing in popular music – at least that’s how they present themselves on their own website. Their songs have definitely a poppier and sunnier approach than the Mobius Band’s ones, mostly because of Melissa’s radiant vocals, but also the experimentation in the arrangement department is curbed to a minimum.

Weekly Feature: Caveman plays Deli CMJ show at Pianos, 10.20

Posted on:

On a residential block of East Third Street, there’s a small yellow guitar that marks the entrance to Cobra Guitars. This inconspicuous dwelling serves as the workshop of Caveman guitarist Jimmy Carbonetti and the band’s unofficial clubhouse. Down the cement stairs and through the unmarked door, visitors will first encounter Carbonetti’s handcrafted guitars hung carefully on the wall, tangles of wires, amps, stacks of vinyl, a vintage-styled couch and a laptop set up in the corner a working musician’s paradise. In the back, there’s an assortment of guitar parts strewn about that will be used to build a dream instrument. Whether it’s Carbonetti, keyboardist Sam Hopkins and guitar technician Mas Hino working on guitars or a rotating cast of peers dropping in to hang out or jam, the basement space in the East Village is always humming with activity. – Read the rest of Nancy Chow’s feature on Caveman here. – Caveman will play The Deli’s CMJ show at Pianos on Thursday 10.20.

Weekly Feature: The Hollows play CMJ at Hiro Ballroom on 10.22

Posted on:

The Hollows are a 5-piece band from Brooklyn who specialize in the multi-part harmony, instrument-swapping, kitchen sink approach to roots rock – they sometime call it "rootsabilly". Formed in 2009, the group has developed a solid local following, mostly because of their energetic live shows, which despite lacking a drummer keep the audience’s toes tapping nonstop. The band recently released their debut album "Belong to the Land" and will participate to this year’s CMJ Music Marathon with a show at Hiro Ballroom on Saturday October 22. – Read Ben Krieger Q&A with the band here.

From The Deli’s NYC Open Blog: Kerri & Bill

Posted on:

Kerri & Bill met in a basement in Bushwick last winter. They were wearing leather jackets and boots. Both respected songwriters in their own right, they teamed up to record a 5 song EP called "Down" which will be released later this month. The simple two guitar arrangement (with a little banjo for good measure) and harmonies are reminiscent of the Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings pairing. This duo, however, walks a line closer to the L train than the Fireball Mail. Kerri’s strong, sometimes gravelly vocals are matched only by Bill’s expressive, dirty guitar. The duo plays Pine Box Rock Shop Saturday the 24th at 9pm and Rockwood Music Hall on Sunday the 25th at 7pm. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
