Sports Coach releases 2nd EP, plays Tuesday in Boston

Posted on:

Just a few weeks after releasing his debut, Hit The Showers, Sports Coach is back with another EP, Grab Your Balls and Get On The Court. This time around the NFL sound bites are sent to the bench but coach’s lo-fi charm remains the same and even a little hazier.  Several tracks suggest a poor performance on the field or court, but Sports Coach always tries to make it sound positive, as a good coach would. Coach sums it up quite well: “Poetry is dumb, no muscles needed."

Sports Coach performs Tuesday at Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain, MA, with The Deli’s artist of the month, Nathan Ventura.

Boston’s Italian Indie-Pop Ensemble Tredici Bacci Release Cover of “The Most Beautiful Song Ever”

Posted on:

Tredici Bacci‘s vocalist has one of the most thankless lead singing jobs. Her rhythm vocals take no more of the spotlight than the violins, but alternate beautifully between sustained soprano and a stone skipping over fake Italian waters. Yeah (sorry I blew your cover), Tredici Bacci is no more Italian than Jesse Camp was homeless. But who cares? They’re classically-trained musicians performing orchestral pop songs that, somehow, get the young people dancing. Today’s cover of what bandleader Simon Hanes called "the most beautiful song in the world," Ennio Morricone’s "Metti Una Sera A Cena" is perfect seduction music.

IN HEAT and Bugs and Rats Tour Starts Tonight in Providence

Posted on:

The first time I saw Boston’s excellent Bugs and Rats, Nick from How They Light Cigarettes in Prison told me they sound like Nirvana. I’d never have thought of it, but In Utero is a pretty close comparison.

Providence’s In Heat is screaming angry metal with enough power to make even the old people in the pit move (don’t confuse them with the In Heat who have a Facebook page, though). Tour starts tonight at OE BNB in Providence, with Boston’s Abominable Skimask.

Nathan Ventura & The Buttercups Blew Me Away

Posted on:

This record is like nothing I’ve ever heard, and I’ve heard at least four albums in my life. Pucker Up conjures Hunter S. Thompson in the desert at 3 AM, tripping on mescaline, eating dusty spiders. The electric guitar sometimes sounds like a buzzsaw and usually like a string is about to break, the standup bass rocks harder than The Jesus Lizard, the drums sound like flattened cardboard boxes, and the unpretentious, distorted vocals sing bizarre tales of loneliness and going to sleep crying to Michael Hurley. This might be the best record of the year.

New Kal Marks EP

Posted on:

Sometimes after I drink too much I find myself mimicking Kal Marks voice. It’s never an effective pick-up move. But it is the driving howl of Boston’s most cohesive three piece that continues its dark & sludgy progression with Zimmerman being one of their most memorable songs to date. The organ on It Was a Very Hard Year is what you would hear when an evil clown is lurking nearby before the nightmare is over. It may be "just a lonely fart" but this one’s a little ripper that’s gonna leave a stain.

DOOMSDAY STUDENT RECORD RELEASE SHOW – SATURDAY IN PROVIDENCE

Posted on:

Providence’s Doomsday Student somehow summon the joyful noise of four 8 year-olds who’ve never played music using very structured (but still noisy) songs. Live, singer Eric Paul moves around like a bully making fun of a "spastic," while his bandmates similarly bully their instruments.

Their new record, A Walk Through Hysteria Park, sounds a lot like their old band, Arab on Radar, and much noisier than their other previous band, Chinese Stars.

Record release show this Saturday, 11/29/14, in Providence, at Dusk, their final show ’til March.

Sports Coach Releases First EP

Posted on:

Most coaches probably spend their spend their spare time off the field rubbing their stupid bald heads like my old basketball coach; but not Sports Coach, coach of all sports, in his spare time he’s busy putting out music under the "athletic wear" genre of bandcamp. Once you get past the NFL soundbites at the beginning of every song you’ll find catchy little post punk tunes with an assist from lo fi. This ep only lasts a little bit over an average quarter but for Sports Coach it’s all about leading his team to victory. One day at a time.

GREAT WESTERN PLAIN

Posted on:

Portland, Maine’s Great Western Plain float in a strange place somewhere between Americana and Noise Rock. 2014’s Elastic Smile starts off with a 12 minute bass-driven jam called "Thom" which gets fun and noisy, but "Venado Negro" is the stand-out track, mixing a smooth chant-like vocal with fuzzy bass rumbling below. Their melodic but heavily processed vocals, bluesy bass lines and chord progressions have this rural quality that suits both a long drive across the “great western plain” and punks kicking over trash cans in the big city. FEEDING TUBE RECORDS RELEASES BUCK GOOTER’S “THE SPIDER’S EYES” TODAY!

Posted on:

When was the last time you saw an industrial band play an intimate, inexpensive show? If you’ve never seen Buck Gooter, your answer is probably "1987." Today, Northampton’s Feeding Tube Records release this wonderfully intense duo’s newest record. No, they’re not father and son (Billy and Terry met while working together), but they are genuinely weird. Billy does most of the singing, getting in the faces of numbed barflies until they either join in or push him away, but sometimes Terry takes the mic, as on their song about having sex with a hornet’s nest. Rosies and the Rosies Will Rock You

Posted on:

This band rules. Distorted guitar-based pop/rock songs with real love behind them. Rosie would never record something she didn’t mean, and, for proof, check out their Soundcloud:

You know a band really means it when they only post one song! It’s been this way for months, too. To be honest, though, Rosie and the Rosies really shine live. The guitar is louder, the vocals farther to the back, and the passion on her face in full view. Check out one of their shows around Boston.

TELLAVISION RULES

Posted on:

Bostonians-in-the-know always go to Cambridge’s monthly Cheap Seats event to discover new music, as it never disappoints.

Last month, during a particularly great show, everyone was blown away by a young German woman who sampled and looped her dynamically complex vocals and cathartically banged on keyboard and buckets to create a danceable wall of sound unlike anything else this side of The Velvet Underground’s Factory shows. Standing out among the crowd of greatness there is tough. Catch Tellavision before she moves out of Boston next year.

Music Video Review: Here We Just Dream–To Be Devoured

Posted on:

A sasquatch guzzling a glass bottle of milk, a bizarre karate/knife fight and a mysterious Final Fantasy-esque heroine–all this and more can be found in Here We Just Dream’s new video for their song “To Be Devoured.” It was released a few weeks ago, but I came across it last week and felt I had to alert all of you fine Deli readers about its oddly-captivating presence. The song itself is super tight, with airy arpeggios supported by a steady rhythm section. I’m more or less at a loss for words in describing the video, but it’s so intriguing I wasn’t able to look away.

If you’re interested in checking the band out live, they’ll be at The Middle East Upstairs on December 14. More info about that show can be found here. For updates about the band, check out their website.
