Honey Locust just put out a 7" live recording of their show at Exit/In back in August on Wild Kindness Records. This is a limited edition release of only 50 hand-lathed albums consisting of two new tracks, and come with a download for the rest of that evening’s set. “God Bless the Blues” is Side A; its heavy with piano and pounds through a few tempo changes, and drives home the fact that we can always rely on Honey Locust for a good woe-is-me anthem. This would be a great purchase for vinyl aficionados, independent music supporters, or Honey Locust fans that need something to tide them over as the band holes up in the studio for the winter. –Terra James-Jura
Show Alert: Stone Jack Jones at Exit/In 11.10
It seems that every time we revisit Stone Jack Jones our minds get bent a little more, and we like it. He released "Circumstance" late October as a prelude to his upcoming album. It is just as unsettling as what we’ve come to expect, but it’s a little faster and harder, and there’s a definite spaghetti Western tang to is this one that grabs our intrigue. Kurt Wagner of Lambchop makes an appearance on this track, as the creepy demon voice echoing the lyrics, we assume, unless Wagner sat in on banjo and the recording just happened to turn out that way, something that would not be completely out of the realm of possiblity for Jack Jones and his sage-burning ways. Stone Jack Jones has been on tour for the better part of October with O’Death, a genuis pairing that is stopping in Nashville this Monday night at Exit/In for anyone with $12 in their pocket. Joe Fletcher and the Wrong Reasons round out the evening’s bill.
As an aside, O’Death recently lost all of their gear to a theft in L.A. and has been scrambling to not only piece things together after a potentially career-ending blow, but are also soldiering on to complete the last dates of their tour. Paperhead to Release “Africa Avenue” 11.11
Paperhead just returned home after a two-week run around the Midwest and up to New York for CMJ, where they recieved some well-deserved attention (Noisey, in particular, called their music "straight-up, acid folk perfection.") The foursome is set to release their second album, "Africa Avenue" on November 11th via Chicago, IL label Trouble in Mind. It has the same feel of "Rubber Soul," not only in trippiness but also in that several songs feature just one interesting sonic addition, like the jazzy flute collaborating on track 6, "Nasty Girl" or an only-slightly creepy chorus of children’s voices on track 2, "Eye for Eye," or some very retro space effects on the first song, "Africa." It’s a very polite, very British approach to psychedelia. Paperhead is part of the lineup for Fly Golden Eagle’s album release show at Queen’s Art Collective on November 14th; the show starts at 9 and cover is $10. -Terra James-Jura
Video Premiere: Them Vibes, “Lorelei”
We couldn’t wait for this Thursday morning to roll around to show you what Them Vibes have been up to. They’ve been putting together a video for their boot-stomping tale of jealous love "Lorelei" the past few weeks, and we’re thrilled to help bring it to the public. Honestly, this video throws a new shade of sophistication in our eyes on these boys. Anyone that has heard the tune on Lightning 100 or live knows that the story of Lorelei is not neccessarily "happy" and doesn’t "not end in murder," but the video, directed by David Dutton, renders it in layer after layers of striking visuals that echo the cyclical nature of our collective shuffe along this mortal coil. It also features a favorite hometown haunt in several scenes, and yes, that is Denzel of Santa’s Pub playing a not-unfamiliar role as preacher in the death row scene. Them Vibes have been busy recording a new album between playing shows in and around the South, so keep up with the band HERE for new developments. -Terra James-Jura
Fable Cry, “Fancy Dancing”
File this one under "WTF?" and "YES." The first time we ever heard of Fable Cry was last night at 8 off 8th, when they we caught their set on the homestretch of the night. They set up and tore through their three songs with such gusto and conviction that we turned to our neighbor at the end of the set and said, "This kind of kicks ass." Which is not to say Fable Cry isn’t out there; they look like something Tim Burton coughed up, and sing like the villian’s bit in a vintage Disney movie. The band started out as brother/sister duo Zach and Kirstie Ferrin, and over four years morphed into the minature Trans Siberian Ochestra they are today. Per their behest to that evening’s crowd, we went home and checked out the video for "Fancy Dancing" that they had just released on October 24th. Clocking in at over six minutes and deploying enough ruffles and grease paint to outfit the cast of Sweeney Todd, its a rare glimpse into Fable Cry’s natural habitat. Warning: watching this video might suck you down the rabbit hole of their other material, and you might lose a good chunk of time to the band’s strange theatrics, including a video of a yeti and Poseidon playing chess. Fable Cry: bizarre, but we dig it. -Terra James-Jura
Congratulations to Milk People, Our New Artist of the Month!
Congratulations to Milk People for winning our latest Artist of the Month poll. They pulled ahead with a strong lead from the get go that, and the gap proved uncloseable for the duration of the poll. October 18th saw the release of their EP "Invisible Ink," and it expands upon the little spark dubbed "Dracula Pop" when the band cut their first song "Steeples" back in January. It is appropriately dosed with enough organ to get some ghouls out on the dancefloor, but the camp factor is more dialed back than this magazine is was initially anticipating. We love a band with some depth to them, and Milk People show a surprising sense of refinement to the dark, dance-y niche they’ve carved out for themselves in the noir landscape. We especially loving the last track of the EP, "Just Deserts," that uncoils like a pulp rendition of a forgotten Motown hit. Milk People are hitting the East Room on December 18th, so be sure to come out and show them some love! -Terra James-Jura
Hotel War Album Release Show at The 5 Spot 11.8
The upside to this recent cold snap is the realization that it is officially Leather Weather. Now the jacket that would have made you look like you were trying too hard in August becomes a perfectly acceptable utility piece. And what pairs well with a leather jacket? Motorcycles? Cigarettes? Broads? How about Hotel War’s brand spanking new EP "Nashville Nights?" Equal parts grit and sleaze, the trio’s down and dirty follow-up to their "Rebel Out of Time" EP is a spin through the screaming, 70’s-flavored RAWK that they do so well. The EP drops November 7th, with a release show on November 8th at The 5-Spot. Below is their most recent video for "Casino Nights" for a little Hotel War appetizer. With a lineup including sax-driven party rock from Diamond Carter and barn burners from perennial crowd pleasers Blackfoot Gypsies, this is probably one of those nights that will include a fistfight with your future best friend. Or spouse. -Terra James-Jura
Kyle Andrews Releases Video for “Get Mad (Bump in the Nite)”
In honor of the spooky season, Kyle Andrews rounded up some hotties and director Seth Graves to put out this booze-influenced video. "Get Mad (Bump in the Nite)" is off Andrew’s is the first track off the new EP of the same name that he just released a week ago. Ever the pop genius, he manages to put a few tweaks on tracks that sound completely Halloween appropriate, but can also easily stand alone. He’s giving away the "Get Mad" EP to the first 75 in the door at Monster Bash tonight, where he is one of the heavy hitters in the lineup. Speaking of which, we just learned that there is a change of venue for that event, from Silver Point Studios to apparently haunted Donelson Bowl at 117 Donelson Pike. If this night wasn’t already killer, the bowling just put it over the top. -Terra James-Jura
The Wans, “Never Win”
September 9th saw the release of The Wan’s album "He Said, She Said" and was shortly followed by this video for "Never Win." The Wans nail their juncture of Southern and alternative rock, and it turns out they nail comedy pretty well too, with this montage of the Worst Day Ever. For some reason, watching vocalist Simon Kerr sing straight-faced through a mouthful of Wan-Os struck us as profoundly funny. The trio are part of the lineup for tonight’s Monster Bash at Silver Point Studios, with no dates on the books beyond that yet, so come out to the show tonight and keep up with the boys at thewansmusic.com. -Terra James-Jura
Chrome Pony, “Burnout”
Are the next few posts just a thinly veiled plug for tomorrow night’s Monster Bash 2014? Or is it just a coincidence that so many bands in the lineup have done some really cool stuff in the past few months? Tough to say; with 16 bands in the lineup, the numbers could go either way.
Chrome Pony released this video for "Burnout" in support of their EP "You Are the Pisces" released this August. Shot in Puerto Rico, it’s mostly footage of what kids do when their f*cking around in a US territory: drinking, skateboarding, making upside-down faces, playing ridiculously spot-on, grungy odes to, well, being young and disaffected. Okay, so kids don’t typically do the last bit, probably because they don’t have a grasp on the finer points of the organ’s role in garage rock.
The brothers Davis and crew are following up their appearance at Monster Bash on Friday night with a show at The Stone Fox on November 1st with Avi Buffalo and Adia Victoria. Check out "You Are the Pisces" on their Bandcamp. -Terra James-Jura
Year of October Release Video for “Gone”
Following the Quentin Tarantino school of thought that good music is enhanced by bad kung fu (or is it vice-versa?) Year of October put out this video at the beginning of this month for their song "Gone." The track is off their brand new album "Golden Days," which was just released on October 11th. We’re clearly digging us some steady, gritty blues this week, and are thrilled to be able to find it in our own backyard. Year of October have the notoriety of winning our Artist of the Month earlier this year, and have clearly been hard at work since then, hitting the road on a regular basis between recoding stints. They hit Springwater Supper Club on November 15th with The Dead Gypsies and Fat Tuesday and the New Custards. -Terra James-Jura
Whoa Dakota, “The Sand”
In case you missed Whoa Dakota’s unveiling of this video for "The Sand" earlier this month, here it is for your Monday morning. It’s a quick number with a slow burn; we dig the gopro action and their gradual creep up to a vengeful crescendo. They may look like kids, but they can sing some mean blues. Stay tuned to this band for an upcoming single as a follow-up to their six-song EP ealier this year, and catch them at The 5 Spot on December 2nd. –Terra James-Jura
