Waterfall Wash EP Release Show at fooBar 1.31

Posted on:

Waterfall Wash will finally be releasing their debut EP, "Foreign Chords" on January 27th, after almost five years since their inception in 2010. Their folky storytelling has evolved over time, an assemblage of instruments have been collected (you won’t find many groups with a dedicated autoharpist) and a sense of the dramatic has been honed. The handful of singles Waterfall Wash have released over 2014 are marked with flourishes from a multitude of influences, like screaming electric guitar solos in "Landmark" and a twee acoustic tune leading into fiddle and all the handclaps in their most recent tune, "Visions." Throw in their penchant for Chicago’s jazz underground, and that’s alot of sound to be packed into one EP. We’re excited to hear how it fits.

Waterfall Wash is having an EP release show this Saturday at fooBar with kidDEAD, Rales, and The FUTURE. Show starts at 9pm, and cover is $5.

Congatulations to Ambrose Way, Our New Artist of the Month!

Posted on:

We got so caught up in the launch of our Best of 2014 poll (check out our nominees in the box on your right and vote for your favorite) that we neglected to tell you about the handsome gentlemen gracing the top of our website. We first heard about Ambrose Way when they were part of a Palaver Thursday at fooBar, and cited some of their 60’s-styled acoustic numbers as perfect reminders that spring is around the corner. The four have just finished an album, Pop A, and it is most definitely worthy of the term ‘epic.’ The album tears out of the gate with a Trans-Siberian Orchestra/Queen influenced instrumental, and keeps up the same vibe for the next 26 minutes through slow jams and more spirited rockers.  We’re partial to "Little Mexico;" the horn-driven opening makes us think of Chicago. There’s definitely some clever tag waiting to attach itself to these guys, something along the lines of "Big Band psych-rock," but, you know, cleverer. Check out the full album here. -Terra James-Jura

Show Alerts: ELEL at The High Watt 1.19

Posted on:

2015 looks like it is going to be the year year for ELEL. With their upcoming debut album to be released on Mom + Pop records and a list of dates ahead of them, it looks like some of the good vibes ELEL has been hashing out are boomeranging back to them. While we might be satisfied listening to “40 Watt” ad nauseum, we’re excited that there is more on the horizon, and we will not be surprised as the rest of the world starts freaking out over them too. The 8-piece are capping off a recent run with lo-fi pop outfit Generationals with a show at The High Watt this Monday, January 19th. –Terra James-Jura

Show Alert: Tetherball’s “Fiesta Party” 1.17 at The High Watt

Posted on:

The Fiesta Party is one of those events that gets better and better the deeper you go. Salsa dancing lessons, a taco bar, and a MF-ing pinata in the High Watt? The real question this raises is why is this not happening every night? The evening makes more sense when it becomes clear that Steve Voss of Tetherball is behind the madness, which also explains the killer lineup of The Gills, Charlie Whitten and recent addition Bear in the Campsite. Between contributing to the Monster Bash blowout over Halloween and this hoedown on Saturday, Voss is starting to display a proclivity for curating entire experiences, and has hinted that this is not the last themed show of his design.  Tetherball continbues this spirit of head-scratching fun by reinterpreting their own album "Whimsy" with jazz outfit Hot Club Time Machine, and releasing the session as "Gypsy Jazzivore." Watch this video of a trippy cover of a song about absinthe hallucinations below. It’s kind of meta.

Fiesta Party kicks off at 7pm at The High Watt this Saturday, January 17th. $7 bucks gets you admission, a salsa dancing lesson, pinata swings and all the tacos you can eat. Tickets are available HERE. -Terra James-Jura

The Harmaleighs “Doll Made of Glass”

Posted on:

The Harmaleighs are a duo consiting of Haylee and Kaylee, who found each other when they were Belmont students and have been making sharp, smart folk that can switch from coffeehouse to arena in a heartbeat ever since. The two cover topics familiar to gals in their early twenties: love, loss, hometowns. Plug it in and speed it up, and their tunes could hang with any early-aughts emo band. Luckily these two are blessed with a sense of humor, evident in their sweetly awkward stage banter, and a few clever turns of phrase peppering their lyrics that extends all the way to the name of their upcoming album (out February 3rd): "Pretty Pictures, Dirty Brush." The pair released "Doll Made of Glass," the second single off the album in December. The Harmaleighs are heading out to Telluride this weekend and embarking on a tour shortly thereafter. Check out their full schedule and keep updated on the pair at www.theharmaleighs.com. -Terra James-Jura

Seryn Album Release Show at The High Watt 2.12

Posted on:

Seryn was the headlining act for this Sofar Sounds gig last Tuesday. The band had made the strategic move from Denton, TX to Nashville just this October, with the mind of finding a more centrally located jumping off point for touring and a more receptive environment for their music. At six members strong, the band channels their high energy into bouyant folk-pop with male-female vocals and an arsenal of stringed instruments. Their handle on dynamics are mind-boggling at times, especially in a live, acoustic setting where every hush was brought into immedate relief. They sing like a gang of rogue, banjo-toting angels.

Seryn is preparing for the release of their second full-length album "Shadow Shows" on February 17th. Their release show will be at The High Watt on February 12th with Red Headed Indian. Tickets are available here, and the album is available for pre-order here. Check out the show and give Seryn a proper Nashville welcome (which is a basket of hot chicken and Goo Goo Clusters, if we recall correctly.) -Terra James-Jura

Woodferd, “We Are Dead”

Posted on:

Last night we finally had the chance to get on the trolley and check out a Sofar Sounds show. Not only did we enjoy seeing artists presented in such an intimate, respectful setting, we were also pleased by the thoughtful curation of the evening’s entertainment, featuring acts all at some level of new to Nashville. We dug the lineup enough to dedicate a post to each artist, starting with Minnesota transplant Woodferd.

Peter John McKeown employs himself, a few strategic loops and occasional friends to perform under the handle Woodferd. He made the jump from his hometown of St. Paul, MN to Nashville in September, and released his self-titled debut album two short months later. McKeown touches on themes such as death and the Earth as a whole through light, easy-swilling folk. Take a listen to "We Are Dead" to get a sense of this subtle juxtaposition. There was talk of a Nashville album release show in the works, so keep up with Woodferd here and here as details emerge. -Terra James-Jura

Easy Roscoe Release Debut Album “Keep the Dancin’ Dancin'”

Posted on:

Easy Roscoe, a 5-piece self-proclaimed "Party Rock" band, spent over a year working on their first album. They decided to drop "Keep the Dancin’ Dancin" during the coldest part of 2015, a sharp contrast to the summery jams contained therein. Underneath the initial sugar-shock of the beachy veneer of the album lies ten tracks of vivid storytelling. Easy Roscoe draws on pop punk, ska, reggae, even some country twang to serve whatever yarn they’re spinning, be it about escaped prisoners ("Man in a Cell") working stiffs scrabbling up the ladder ("Happy to See You"), or 21-year-old alcoholics barreling towards the slammer ("Bad Situation".) They’re clever without being cloying, and lighthearted while maintaining some bite, and evoke shades of Bradley Nowell and Elvis Costello. "Alright; Regina" was a track about young love that stood out as a favorite and left us craving the smell of sunblock. "Keep the Dancin’ Dancin’" is a solid first effort that is going to get some heavy play as we inch towards summer. Follow Easy Roscoe for upcoming events and developments HERE.Terra James-Jura

Easy Roscoe submitted their music to The Deli Nashville for review; you can do the same here.

Mouth Reader at Phat Bites Deli 1.10

Posted on:

Garage stalwarts Mouth Reader just released this video for "Melt," that pays as much homage to hallucinogens as it does the sacred tradition of the liquid light show. The duo have been kicking up dust around the state after the November release of the 4-track EP by the same name, and have returned from a 6-show run through Texas, Louisiana and Georgia. They’re letting Nashville know they’re back with a show this Saturday at Phat Bites Deli with Ebony Eyes and Heinous Orca. Check out the show and see if there’s any chance they have just one more of these gorgeous 7"s squirreled away. -Terra James-Jura

Kylie Rothfield Releases Video “Like You Should”

Posted on:

Keeping up with our emerging unofficial "In with the New" theme this week, blues chanteuse Kylie Rothfield released this video for her latest single last Tuesday. "Like You Should" unfurls like a a slow-burning missive on bad love, but the chorus is puncuated by one of the most visceral vocalizations that we may hear all year. It comes out of nowhere, and totally makes the song. We love a gal with a good yell. Check out Kylie’s website at www.kylierothfield.com and keep up with her whereabouts on her FB page. -Terra James-Jura

Braintapes, “Sophia”

Posted on:

Seeing as we are still in the single digits of 2015, it seems appropriate to focus on some brand new local talent. Braintapes released this single along with the announcement of an upcoming EP back in December. "Sophia" drifts on some definite jazz stylings, but there’s enough post-everything angst to keep it anchored and focused. It’s an interesting listen (and we’re sure there are some music theory manipulations that are escaping our comprehension,) and we’re looking forward to hearing how the rest of the EP turns out. This Braintape’s first single, and to drive home how fresh they are, the band are still virgins to a Nashville stage. That’s all going to change on January 8th, when they play their first show in town at The End, along with The Hart Strings, Devin Dawson and Jake Vroom. Seeing at the show is only $5, there’s every reason to head out and welcome Braintapes into the fold. -Terra James-Jura

Show Alert: King Bitch, Daddy Issues and I’m an Island at The End 1.5

Posted on:

With all of the holidays finally behind us, we’re happy to be back to some semblance of sanity. We’re also stoked to see more unexpectedly awesome lineups on random Monday nights, like this one: Trunkweed, King Bitch, Daddy Issues and I’m an Island at The End this Monday night. We’ve had passing obsessions in 2014 with Daddy Issue’s pizza-and-Nirvana-driven garage rock and I’m and Island’s floaty, lost-summer vibe. King Bitch managed to release a debut full-length/greatest hits collection via Infinity Cat last fall; below is their video for their lo-fi/glam punk and all-too-brief track "Video Blackhole." These three acts provide a good local anchor for touring, Baltimore-based act Trunkweed, who’s bedroom pop bridges the gap between these sonic spectrums. In other words, it is a show worthy of your Monday night. The night starts at 8pm, and cover is $5. -Terra James-Jura
