Secret Club just sent their song "Why Can’t Friends Just Kiss on the Lips Sometimes?" into the world last week, just in time to fall into ironic lockstep with Valentine’s Day. It’s a heavy, psycho-surf track that the trio grinds through with just enough sleaziness to give it some flavor. There’s a definitely a strain of frustration in vocalist AJ Babcock’s voice as he sings "who makes the rules?" in the breakdown. This is the first single from their upcoming debut album. There’s no release date yet, but the band has been busy playing gigs around Nashville, and have a big show on February 25th at 12th and Porter. Check out their website, and, if you REALLY dig them, visit their amazing fan site. -Terra James-Jura
Show Alert: Easy Roscoe Album Release Show at Grimey’s 2.19
We covered Easy Roscoe when their album first hit earlier in January. "Keep the Dancin’ Dancin’" is a high-spirited album that had a surprising amount of depth beneath it’s pop surface. Well, the band is going to be at Grimey’s this Thursday for a free album release show. Come out early (6pm) to see the band crank out a few numbers like "Learn to Laugh," then stick around to pick up their debut album. In case you miss Thursday’s show, Easy Roscoe has a solid block of March dates coming up: Exit/In 3/9, Soulshine Pizza 3/11, and The End 3/17. Check out website for announcements and the full rundown of their spring shows. -Terra James-Jura
Great Peacock Announce New Album “Making Ghosts” 5.12
Great Peacock announced the May 12th release of their full-length debut album "Making Ghosts" a few days ago, and accompanied the news with a fresh single, "Broken-Hearted Fool." The track has been a standby in their live sets, and carries such a classic edge to it that a casual listener might wonder what Wilco song the crew is covering. "Making Ghosts" will be releases via This is American Music, putting Great Peacock in the company of other Southern greats like Caleb Caudle, Fire Mountain, and The District Attorneys. We’ve been longtime fans to this bro-folk outfit and their ability to make us misty by way of one pefectly placed slide on the lap steel. You can see if they grab you by the same sort of feels by checking them out at The 5-Spot on February 27th. Commence the countown to May 12th! -Terra James-Jura
Best of Nashville 2014 for Emerging Artists, FINAL RESULTS: 1. ELEL, 2. BASECAMP, 3. Wings of Apollo
Deli Nation,
Our Year End Poll for Emerging Nashville Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!
Kudos to ELEL for winning The Deli NASHVILLE’s Artist of the year! The new Mom + Pop signees are poised to release their debut EP into the world on March 3rd. The 8-piece supergroup dish out some big, world-flavored indie pop, and their live show can be classified as one of the happiest places on earth. If you haven’t heard "40 Watt" yet, then for Chrissakes, here it is!
Electronic collaborators BASECAMP came in second. The trio have been building a following of their emotionally-charged, sparsely-produced music for the past few years. They recently have announced "Gradient" a live concert/dance series of all original music with local dance troupe Found Movement Group. More details and tickets are available HERE.
Wings of Apollo came in third in the overall vote in addition to sweeping our Reader’s Choice Poll. The trio released their epic "By Force" EP earlier in 2014, and are channeling their heavy metal talents into a new album this year.
Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of Nashville scene experts (our jury is listed under the chart) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.
If you are a geek interested in all the subtleties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Nashville produced in the year 2014, this list is all you need. Enjoy!
