Listen to Secret Club’s New Track “Why Can’t Friends Just Kiss on the Lips Sometimes?”

Posted on:

Secret Club just sent their song "Why Can’t Friends Just Kiss on the Lips Sometimes?" into the world last week, just in time to fall into ironic lockstep with Valentine’s Day. It’s a heavy, psycho-surf track that the trio grinds through with just enough sleaziness to give it some flavor. There’s a definitely a strain of frustration in vocalist AJ Babcock’s voice as he sings "who makes the rules?" in the breakdown. This is the first single from their upcoming debut album. There’s no release date yet, but the band has been busy playing gigs around Nashville, and have a big show on February 25th at 12th and Porter. Check out their website, and, if you REALLY dig them, visit their amazing fan site. -Terra James-Jura

Show Alert: Easy Roscoe Album Release Show at Grimey’s 2.19

We covered Easy Roscoe when their album first hit earlier in January. "Keep the Dancin’ Dancin’" is a high-spirited album that had a surprising amount of depth beneath it’s pop surface. Well, the band is going to be at Grimey’s this Thursday for a free album release show. Come out early (6pm) to see the band crank out a few numbers like "Learn to Laugh," then stick around to pick up their debut album. In case you miss Thursday’s show, Easy Roscoe has a solid block of March dates coming up: Exit/In 3/9, Soulshine Pizza 3/11, and The End 3/17. Great Peacock Announce New Album “Making Ghosts” 5.12

Posted on:

Great Peacock announced the May 12th release of their full-length debut album "Making Ghosts" a few days ago, and accompanied the news with a fresh single, "Broken-Hearted Fool." The track has been a standby in their live sets, and carries such a classic edge to it that a casual listener might wonder what Wilco song the crew is covering. "Making Ghosts" will be releases via This is American Music, putting Great Peacock in the company of other Southern greats like Caleb Caudle, Fire Mountain, and The District Attorneys. We’ve been longtime fans to this bro-folk outfit and their ability to make us misty by way of one pefectly placed slide on the lap steel. You can see if they grab you by the same sort of feels by checking them out at The 5-Spot on February 27th. Commence the countown to May 12th! -Terra James-Jura

Best of Nashville 2014 for Emerging Artists, FINAL RESULTS: 1. ELEL, 2. BASECAMP, 3. Wings of Apollo

Posted on:

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging Nashville Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!

Kudos to ELEL for winning The Deli NASHVILLE’s Artist of the year! The new Mom + Pop signees are poised to release their debut EP into the world on March 3rd. The 8-piece supergroup dish out some big, world-flavored indie pop, and their live show can be classified as one of the happiest places on earth. If you haven’t heard "40 Watt" yet, then for Chrissakes, here it is!

Electronic collaborators BASECAMP came in second. The trio have been building a following of their emotionally-charged, sparsely-produced music for the past few years. They recently have announced "Gradient" a live concert/dance series of all original music with local dance troupe Found Movement Group. More details and tickets are available HERE.

Wings of Apollo came in third in the overall vote in addition to sweeping our Reader’s Choice Poll. The trio released their epic "By Force" EP earlier in 2014, and are channeling their heavy metal talents into a new album this year.

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of Nashville scene experts (our jury is listed under the chart) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtleties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Nashville produced in the year 2014, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

The Deli Nashville and Kelly Ruth Present: The Last Chance Dance 2.27

Posted on:

Block off your calendars: we’re super excited to be part of this event. The Deli Nashville is teaming up with Kelly Ruth to present The Last Chance Dance, a pop-up show at Lucky Bamboo (5855 Charlotte Pike, right next to K&S Market.) Yes, we are taking over this unassuming and tastefully appointed China bistro to put on a post-Valentine’s Day soiree! The evening’s lineup includes the ethereal Kelly Ruth, folk-popster Korby Lenker, the ageless rock of duo Twiggs, and brand-new Plowboy Records signees Blackfoot Gypsies, with DJ AyDamn in between sets and Luke Watson of LOL Nashville emceeing the whole shebang. We’re also raffling prizes from Walker Jewelrey, Pinewood Social and Sack of Cats (to name a few) and auctioning off dates with willing band members, so Lucky Bamboo is the place to be if you’re feeling lucky! Cover is $10 and the event is BYOB. The show starts at 8pm, though there’s no reason not to show up early and get share a hot pot with your sweetie! -Terra James-Jura

Our Reader’s Choice Runners-Up: Bentley Caldwell and The Dead Deads

Posted on:

It’s time to take a closer look at the other acts that received high votes in our Reader’s Choice Poll:

Second Place: Bentley Caldwell put up a good fight to win second place in our Reader’s Choice Poll. The Paducah, KY native made his way to Nashville to take part in its trhiving songwriter scene. Caldwell released his first EP "A Place to Be," in 2014. Caldwell’s rich vocals lend themselves to the introspective edge many of his songs take on; all at once he occupies soul, blues, and folk, and handles it with John Legend-level suavity. However, despite the grace and dignity his music carries, Caldwell has, in our hearts, totally won first place in the "Cutest F*cking Song" with "Awkward Turtle." Caldwell wil be playing the Cannery Ballroom February 26th. Listen to the whole EP and learn more about the man HERE.

Third Place: The Dead Deads rallied their fanbase, lovingly hashtagged #deadcorps, to claw their way up to third in our poll. The fivesome are considered a roving grunge dance-party, evoking the spirit of CBGB with heavy jams and unbridled sexiness. The band had a dynamic start to this year, releasing a fresh 7" single a mere week before heading out on tour with Halestorm. Check out their dynamic debut ablum "Rainbeau" at thedeaddeads.com/and watch this wicked video for "Organ P."

Congratulations to Wings of Apollo for Winning Our Reader’s Choice Poll!

Posted on:

Congratulations to Wings of Apollo for winning The Deli Nashville Reader’s Choice poll! The trio rallied the vote early on, and the gap they created thanks to fans dedicated to their no-holds barred metal ultimately proved too wide to overtake. One thing is for sure: these boys can hustle, and ROCK. 2014 proved to be a hell of a year for the band; they released their epic "By Force" EP and won "Best Rock Band" in the Nashville Independent Music Awards, and tore up the stage over dozens of dates near and far, in addition to bassist Pat Graves holding a personal and highly entertaining "Flip a Day" challenge. Wings of Apollo are currently working on a full-length follow-up to "By Force," with a music video nearing its release date. Keep up with their antics and developments here and here.

Listen to Buffalo Rodeo’s New Single “Blue Sky”

Posted on:

We got a listen of Buffalo Rodeo’s mesmerizing first single off their upcoming EP "1 2 3 Water." "Blue Sky" veers a little more into New Age territory than their 2013 release "Home Videos," (it has a few more sustained synth notes…) but still maintains the 70’s psych haze that makes these Bowling Green natives fit in so well with the Nashville scene. Speaking of which, the band is hitting up The High Watt on March 7th for an EP release show with Kansas Bible Company and Twiggs during their spring tour. The single officially drops February 10th, and the album March 6th. -Terra James-Jura

Video Debut: Ethan Samuel Brown, “Tomorrow is a Long Time”

Posted on:

The Inglewood Motel is one of those pieces of gnarly old East Nashville that kind of screams illicit affairs and crack. But in our minds there’s always one room occupied by some newly-arrived Nashville player picking an old favorite in the corner of his room, observing the wallpaper, contemplating his next move, in exactly the way Ethan Samuel Brown does in his live video performance of Bob Dylan’s “Tomorrow is a Long Time.”

Brown, formerly of folk outfit Walden, picked the Inglewood Motel because "it is a fitting environment for a song that was written in 1963, as the place looks as if it hasn’t been remodeled or renovated since 1963. It’s perfect.” The video precedes the June release of his solo album, as well as a set of spring shows, the first falling on February 10 at the High Watt with Mark Fredson, Zach Schmidt, and Pageant. -Terra James-Jura

We dug this album so much that we made it our CD of the Month (check out the left hand column!) Watch Wildfront’s New Video “Strange Gold”

Posted on:

See, this is what happens when you fall out of touch with your friends: they change their names and release award-winning music videos unbeknownst to you. Josephine and the Wildfront shortened their name and raked in a few awards (Best Song, Best Inspirational Film, Best Music Video) at the 2014 ARTligthenment Art and Film Festival for "Strange Gold" before dropping it on the general public. The video is beatufilly rendered and almost begs to be just 55 minutes longer to allow the full scope of the story play out. The song is equally as gorgeous, with a weighty guitar line providing backbone as Moore’s vocals and splashing cymbals float around it in pure dream pop perfection. February 7th is the release date for Wildfront’s new EP, "Strange Gold." Follow the band and be informed of their as-yet-unannounced March tour dates HERE. -Terra James-Jura
