The Marías share video for new single “Cariño,” new EP due out in September

Posted on:

Let The Marías seduce you with their latest single, "Cariño." On the video for the track, the indie-pop quintet wanders in a frolicking manner with the same improvisational flair of a classic French New Wave film. The song’s smoky, yet alluring arrangements are the perfect soundtrack for velvety leader singer María to put forth her inner yé-yé as she rides a Vespa across a barren paradise. María may sing "Cariño" in her native language (it translates to sweetheart in Spanish), but there’s no need for a translator to enjoy the band’s limber guitar strums and swooning brass melody.

"Cariño" is the first single off of The Marías’ forthcoming EP, Superclean Volume II, which is due out sometime in September. Catch them at the Lodge Room Highland Park on September 29. Juan Rodríguez

Marlon Rabenreither is in love. It’s a simple, yet powerful feeling that motivates the singer-songwriter who goes by the moniker Gold Star. A heartfelt tribute to his girlfriend, who helped him during a period of personal strife, the driving power-pop track cruises by with a heartland rock sound. Rabenreither’s gushy reverence is contagious, and he proves that there’s nothing wrong with laying your heart bare with such purity and soul.

Mini Trees release emotional new single “Take it Back”

Posted on:

"Take it Back" sounds like an intimate story come to life. As if stumbling into an open diary, the reflective new single by Mini Trees – the solo project of singer-songwriter Lexi Vega – establishes a meditative mood which befits its patient catharsis. Vega is not a showy performer – her raw vocal delivery is meant to absorb and not impress the listener, as it’s an affective force which underscores the song’s lingering guitar lead. It’s also imbued with a gentle ambiance, an element which adds and never disrupts its true essence and further reveals her emotional authenticity.

Given that this is the beginning of Vega’s project, it’s only a matter of time until she makes a visit to your venue of choice. – Juan Rodríguez

Clean Spill share video for new single “Rolling,” play SoHo House on 8/31

Posted on:

When love takes a sad and dark turn, it’s best to try to relax and kick back with your friends. Pat Curren, the lead singer of indie rock band Clean Spill, tries to get over a heartache by playing with his friends on the video for their latest single, "Rolling." The romantic track follows a surfy, fifties rock style with an early aughts indie rock bent, which paired with Curren’s garbly, yet emotive vocal delivery, showcases their buoyant personality. Maybe Curren doesn’t get his desired outcome as it concludes, but judging by this promising track – and with a little help from his friends – the future looks quite bright.

"Rolling" is the latest single off of Clean Spill’s forthcoming EP, Nothing’s on My Mind, which comes out later this summer. Catch them at SoHo House in Santa Barbara on August 31. Juan Rodríguez

Indie rock band Harvey Trisdale share bittersweet new track “Baby”

Posted on:

Harvey Trisdale have bloomed all the way from Ohio and planted their self-titled roots in LA. One thing the four-piece and I have in common is that we both hail from small towns, except they used their boredom and lack of activities to become talented musicians while I now write about them. Fast-forward through hours of jam sessions, writing blocks and multi-instrumental practicing, the band landed at Silver Lake Lounge on July 20 to celebrate all of their hard work. Before releasing their debut self-titled album, All Things Go, they leaked the single “Baby.” Packed with dreamy vocals, indie-pop vibes, and beautiful guitar strums to break your heart, Harvey Trisdale sings the soundtrack to my current love life. “Baby” is a short and bittersweet song with lyrics that will empty your tissue box, but the mesmerizing lyrics only last about 2 minutes before they serenade us with instrumentals that put the “Top 10” artists argument to rest.

Harvey Trisdale have no upcoming shows, but you can follow them on social media to stay up to date on new releases and future shows. – Kayla Hay

Ruby Haunt share hypnotic new single “Darling,” play Moroccan Lounge residency in August

Posted on:

Ruby Haunt embark on a deep, yet nuanced exploration of their lives on "Darling." The wintry and reflective track, written by the songwriting duo of Wyatt Ininns and Victor Pakpour, slowly unfurls as it patiently reveals its plaintive guitars and hushed synth lines. The duo doesn’t expect to find any solutions, where instead, they draw out a languid mood piece that gives insight into their inward-looking observations.

"Darling" is the latest single off of Ruby Haunt’s forthcoming LP, Blue Hour, which is set to be released sometime in September. The duo is also playing a residency at the Moroccan Lounge in August, where proceeds will go to benefit Inner-City Arts. Juan Rodríguez

James Rose’s “Lullabies to the Ocean” is an unassuming gem, new EP out 7/27

Posted on:

The songs on James Rose’s latest EP, "Lullabies to the Ocean," are about finding happiness in far-flung destinations. For Rose, it was the sights and sounds of the Pacific Coast. On "Lullabies to the Ocean," which shares the name of his forthcoming EP, Rose speaks as a former spectator whose finally found, and marked, his little corner of the world. The sunny track, which takes on seventies soft rock with a gentle folk melody, has a homespun feel that perfectly suits his whispery vocal delivery. It’s one of the many directions Rose takes on Lullabies, all of which expand upon the barebones acoustic instrumentation of his previous work.

Lullabies to the Ocean is out on July 27 on all major streaming platforms. Juan Rodríguez

Night Shop share video for rockabilly-informed new single “The One I Love”

Posted on:

Justin Sullivan conveys the sad-hearted romance of a classic crooner on "The One I Love." But Sullivan, who goes by the collaborative project Night Shop, doesn’t just create a pastiche of a golden era of pop. His recondite references to empty convenience stores and writers like John Keats mingle with his cool and troublemaker character, a statement that resonates with the song’s swinging, rootsy arrangement. And yet, all he wants is for his object of affection to give him a chance as he gallivants on a lively night around the city.

"The One I Love" is the latest single off of Sullivan’s upcoming full-length effort In The Break, which will be released via longtime bandmate Kevin Morby’s label Mare Records. Juan Rodríguez

Fime release video for “Hover Hand,” new EP out 7/20

Posted on:

Fime deliver a powerful dose of hook-heavy power pop on their latest single, "Hover Hand." Taken from their forthcoming EP, Outside, the four-piece project a cheeky, outsider vibe in how they explore themes of fleeting hope and isolation. But Fime are not ones to mope, and much akin to some classic alt-rock bands from their home state, their urgent, yet playful melodicism sounds slick even when the edges are slightly frayed. Shot in Super 8 film, the music video for the track shows candid footage of the band members roaming around some local places of interest you might recognize.

Fime are holding a EP release show for Outside at Rudy’s Barbershop on July 21. Watch the video for "Hover Hand" below. Juan Rodríguez

Jenn Champion shares raw and relentless new single, “Coming for You”

Posted on:

Jenn Champion’s “Coming For You” has everything you’d ever want in a single – good friends, testimonial lyrics, visual captivating sequences, and aesthetically pleasing artwork. For five months, she worked with co-producer Brian Fennell (of SYNL) to create the synthesized masterpiece that was originally supposed to be a rock album, according to Champion. A lyrical genius, a statement I don’t throw around too often, but it adequately describes Jenn Champion and “Coming For You:” “tell me about the lines you fell for and tell me how they always break your heart.” Captivating, refreshing, soothing, jamming, ruthless, raw and relentless, Champion’s artistic capabilities are far past the point of no return.

Single Rider, Champion’s forthcoming album, will be released this Friday, July 13. She will be performing at the Bootleg Theater on August 16 at 8:30, so throw some glitter on your face and show some support for this powerhouse. Kayla Hay

Memory Bells change their course on new single “Day at a Time”

Posted on:

A little patience always comes a long way. It’s not the most novel mantra for a song, but sometimes it’s about how much conviction you put into it. And in the case of indie rock quartet Memory Bells, formerly known as Watch for Horses, they take that confidence to towering heights with an open-hearted embrace. Sporting an infectious jangle hook, their latest single, "Day at a Time," reaches anthemic territory with a tuneful, richly melodic sound. But the band keep it simple, opting to level its passionate chorus without succumbing into any cloying, heart-on-sleeve trappings.

Memory Bells plan to release a series of singles, leading up to the release of their debut EP later this summer. Catch them at The Slidebar Rock N Roll Kitchen on July 10. Juan Rodríguez

Ditches get reflective on sunlit ballad “Setting In”

Posted on:

At the beginning of Ditches’ "Setting In," a noisy squall foretells a feeling of impending dread. It quickly swerves our expectations with a dusky, sunlit ballad, where main songwriter Tim Donnelly’s lazy croon dances against a plinky piano lead until it settles into an aching, slow-burning ending. The noise faintly comes back as it concludes, which only turns up the intrigue for what’s yet to come.

"Setting In" is taken from Donnelly’s upcoming full-length debut record, Not Your Mirror, which is out later this summer. Juan Rodríguez
