Jesus Makes The Shotgun Sound enraptured listeners & makes art

Posted on:

For a tiny little place, Synchronicity Space packs a punch. This writer can’t speak to the venue as a gallery, but for music, it’s the jam. Cuddled up in warehouse-like spareness on one of those perfectly crispy L.A. nights that feel like 8 o’clock forever, four bands and a few in the know blended into each other’s darkness like the black on black on black of the blacked out sky when the city lights burn out. On this night, the lights went dark and the music lit us up.

The best thing about a show in a gallery is not only the merging of multiple forms of art but the willingness of the bands to get loose, to make the space theirs for the night, to be more than themselves, to be the art, to be the medium. One F (from San Francisco), War Tapes, Jesus Makes The Shotgun Sound, and VoicesVoices (all LA based) brought us out and made us pay with some tortured exploration and some torrential force and some traditional rock and roll and some transformative lyrical imagery. We hustled free Colt 45 and we listened to it all happening. Sometimes it all happens and you can’t say why but you feel the rolling underneath you and the earth wells up and someone great is born.

The clear standout of the night, hands down, was JMTSS. So raw, so loud, so scientific, these boys do not mess around. Not even a little bit. This is math rock and this is pathos. A fan tells us that we need this music and until we hear it we didn’t know we needed it. Then she says, "But once you have it, you can’t let it go." JMTSS make you need them. With their understated off-stage presence and their tight (as in cool, not ill-fitting) black suits and their intense scrutiny of every last element, this band goes all Mars Volta and all The Dear Hunter with a maniacal speed and precision. In a hyphenated word, they are mind-blowing. Maybe the stars aligned or maybe the other three just weren’t at their best, but JMTSS owned it, claimed it, ate it up and spit it out. Friday was yours, Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound.

San Diego rockers Lights On

Post punk rockers Lights On have just released their debut album ‘Here Comes The Ocean’. The San Diego based band has a touch of 80’s New Wave, but still remains uniquely moden. It’s just too bad they’re currently playing some dates in New York before returning home at the end of the month.

You can download their song ‘Redlights Flashing’ right here. Check out the full album or watch them back in San Diego on July 31st at the Casbah.

Culprit – July 18th at Borderline

Culprit - Los Angeles rock band

Every once in a while, I go on a music hunt across the internet. Just when I had lost all hope of finding sonic treasure, I came across local rock outfit Culprit. Infectious melodies and powerful vocals bring hope to a genre that’s been getting stale.

These boys will be supplying their talents at Boderline in Thousand Oaks on July 18th, along with Kayaks and The Mowgli’s.

Of course, the Deli has an exclusive download of their unreleased song ‘Decimals and Fractions’ right here.

Shepard Fairey and L.A. Musicians Give Art for Alt Press’ 25th Birthday 7-10

Posted on:

Shepard Fairey has a huge posse, and it’ll only get bigger Saturday, July 10 as he and heavyweights of the L.A. music scene (Mansons Marilyn and Shirley, Gerard Way, Matt Skiba and Adam Jones of Tool) gather to honor Alternative Press magazine’s 25th anniversary. The Merry Karnowsky Gallery will be home to a month-long exhibition of these notables’ artwork. The Deli chatted with Fairey about his contributions to the collection.

The Deli: Describe your pieces in the show.

Shepard Fairey: I have four different faux album covers – Obey designs that reference music history. (They’re) my tribute to the impact of LP designs. One is (Sex Pistol and Indie 103.1 DJ) Steve Jones in front of the jukebox.

The Deli: How did you get involved with the project?

SF: I’ve drawn from the inspiration of music a lot, and Merry Karnowsky is a friend of mine, so it made sense. Music is more populist; it’s more democratic; it’s more fun (than strict art). I try to have my art have that immediate appeal.

The Deli: Any upcoming projects?

SF: Doing illustrations (inspired by) the BP oil spill. There’s an ambiguity to them – seascapes that you sort of see as a Rorschach test. Also going to San Diego for a mural street show (Viva la Revolución: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape, running July 18, 2010-Jan. 2, 2011, at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego).

The Alternative Press Magazine 25th Anniversary Art Show is open to the public July 10-24 at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery, 170 S. La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles.

If you’re like me, you’re nursing one hell of a sunburn today and avoiding sunlight at all costs.  Pools, beaches, waterparks all sound very unappealing.  If you would like to live vicariously through the unscathed, watch this video from Deli favorite The Ghost Inside

Fol Chen drops new album Tuesday 7-6 with show at The Echo

Posted on:

The myopic, mysterious pop outfit Fol Chen plays The Echo this Tuesday July 6. Below is a leak of their next single from their upcoming sophomore release Part II: The New December (out July 6th). "The Holograms" is a clever song of forgotten names and words which bounces along on one of the album’s catchiest melodies. They will be touring the West Coast this July and will embark on a handful of East Coast dates with the rising glo-fi/future beatmaker Baths.

Admiral Radley begins Cali tour with free show at Hammer Museum July 8

Posted on:

Socal and Norcal unite as Admiral Radley—a symbiosis of members of Modesto’s Grandaddy and L.A.’s Earlimart. Mounting a tour through Central California’s Podunk truck stops, the band kicks it off with a free concert at the Hammer Museum in West L.A. on July 8, with sprightly locals Happy Hollows. Central Cali is a place of simultaneous desolation and abundance—in its desert and farmland, in its flatlands and its mountains. Some of the best crowds to play are in the Central Valley, and bands often build a faithful listening base there because—well, it’s the coolest thing to do there. Admiral Radley will undoubtedly be the talk of these small towns and midsize cities for the next month. The Deli wishes them a bountiful tour, as it’s a noble journey upon which they embark.

Baths release Cerulean LP with Daedelus at the Troubadour Saturday 7-3

Posted on:

Over the last six years, under the handle of [Post-Foetus], LA-beatmaker Will Wiesenfeld has gainfully explored the intersections and outer reaches of both electronic and acoustic music. With Baths, his eclecticism finds its greatest focus yet, in a hail of lush melodies, ghostly choirs, playful instrumentation and stuttering beats. Saturday night 7-3 at the Troubadour, Daedelus joins Baths to show us the way of the future, way of the future, way of the future…
