New single and basketball-filled video for “Wrong” from pronoun
The streak of singles from pronoun — the solo indie pop project of Alyse Vellturo — continues with "wrong", a track with a catchy riff and a lyric addressing loneliness and ended relationships. Along with the new song comes a video of Vellturo playing basketball against a team of suit-and-tie clad drones, all of whom eventually become her teammates dressed in pink. Those drones — played by her fellow artists on the Sleep Well label such as Cape Francis, Charles Fauna, and Sulene — symbolize Vellturo turning her feelings from lonely to positive and self-affirming through the power of fun and freedom. Gabrielle Smith (from Eskimeaux) new solo pop project: Gabby’s World
Known more for works of raw emotion and ambient exploration, Gabrielle Smith — performing under the moniker Gabby’s World, and formerly known as Eskimeaux and Ó — treads into poppy fields with her new single "Rear View" from her upcoming album Beast on Beast. "Rear View" continues the transition of Smith’s sound from dark, DIY, drone-based songs into a flower punk bedroom pop act; however, she loses none of the feeling and emotion in her new song. Her previous EP Year of the Rabbit provided space for Smith to feel out her pop possibilities, and, by contrast, she delivers plenty of hooks on "Rear View", tying her visual poetry to head-bopping glo-fi in a way that will make you want to dance in a sad way. Listen to "Rear View" below. The Beast on Beast album release party is scheduled for November 15 at Elsewhere’s Zone One. – Will Sisskind
Haunted Continents releases music video for “What Were You Born For?”
Former Deli NYC Best Emerging Artist James A. M. Downes — known under the moniker Haunted Continents — has released a new track called "What Were You Born For?", along with a lyric video. In the description of the video, Downes mentions that the song’s inspiration — as well as its soaring sound — come from his experience stumbling around a New York bookstore and reading about the Left Hand Path, along with those who envision a daemon helping them down that path to answer the question asked in the title of Downes’s new song. Downes and friends shot the video in different areas of New York City, on Brooklyn rooftops and in Manhattan crosswalks, on empty trains and in busy intersections – you can stream it below. – Will Sisskind
Ritual Talk releases single “Something To Look Forward To”
Psych-rock outlet Ritual Talk have a new single coming out on September 7th called "Something To Look Forward To". We’ve highlighted the group before for their layered harmonies and lush soundscapes; "Something To Look Forward To" brings those in full force, backed by the power of Alex DeSimine’s voice and his and Dylan Gleit’s Frippertronics-style guitars. The synths on the new track create a space-age atmosphere that will carry you away with each listen. To celebrate the new track, the trio performed a release show at Mercury Lounge last night (September 6th); they’ll set out on a nationwide tour afterwards which will take them through the next few months. New Indiana release Darkness Sunshine LP, play Rockwood 09.01
After twenty years of performing together across the country, the minds behind New Indiana — guitarist Randy Bergida and cellist Topu Lyo — have distilled their many conversations, musical adventures, and friendship into Darkness Sunshine, their new LP set to drop on September 1st. There is little production on this record besides a bit of reverb, but neither fancy effects nor overmastering seem necessary to bring out the magic in Randy and Topu’s voices and instruments. Their simple music opens up worlds of drama and calm, of full heads and empty hearts, despite its quiet nature. Think Simon & Garfunkel at their darkest; the vocal harmonies of New Indiana may invite some comparisons. To mark the release of Darkness Sunshine, New Indiana will perform at Rockwood’s Stage 3 on September 1st — the album’s release day — at 10:15 pm. Listen to the title track from Darkness Sunshine below. – Will Sisskind
Raffaella cleans up in new video for “Bruce Willis”
Soulful songwriter Raffaella has released the video for her single "Bruce Willis", a song that explains toeing the line between childhood and adulthood with an air of positivity. To visualize that concept, Raffaella and director Luke Marcus Rosen captured the moments after a wild house party, showing the rising singer-songwriter cleaning up the mess while dancing and singing among the chaos. In the party scenes, twenty-somethings scream in drunken fervor and throw balloons around the room; in the scenes showing the aftermath that follows, all of the revelers have crashed, their bodies wiped of all childish energy, insinuating that in all of us, our time for partying is limited. The well-produced video is the latest accomplishment from Raffaella, who opened for Years & Years last May before a sold-out crowd at Brooklyn Steel. Watch it below. – Will Sisskind
Vlad Holiday releases new track “Like In The Movies”
Romanian-born Vlad Holiday has released his fourth single of 2018, called "Like In The Movies". The dream pop slow jam follows "Children", "Tunnel Vision", and "Obscurity", all of which give an arena rock vibe a’ la lost U2 track from the "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb" era. Following such a productive year of releases and shows at major NYC venues, there is still no news of a possible album release. However, recent pictures on Vlad’s Twitter have shown him writing lyrics on his phone, so more music seems to be on the way. Listen to "Like In The Movies" below. – Will Sisskind
Holy Golden release sunny video for new single “Lost Island”
Perhaps the film industry won’t ever die, as long as enough indie acts decide to shoot music videos on old strips of 8mm cellulite. Holy Golden is the latest group to choose the faded film aesthetic, which lends to the clip for their newest single "Lost Island" the familiar, vintage looking bleeding washed-out color and soft edges. The video, filmed on location in a Swedish resort full of 1950s charm, evokes images of a forgotten era, looking like a compilation of footage from colorized teen beach B-movie flicks. "Lost Island"’s dreamy nature pairs well with the video; the duo of Leslie Schott and Andrew Valenti, who come to Brooklyn from New England’s shores, recorded the sunny track in the middle of winter, releasing it just in time for the doggiest days of the summer. It’s the first single to come from the group’s upcoming collection, called Sleepwalkers in the Milky Way. Watch the video for "Lost Island" below. – Will Sisskind
Deli NYC Premiere: The YeahTones release new single “Son of a Gun” ahead of new EP
Just in time for you to blast it through your speakers with the top down, The YeahTones have released their newest single "Son of a Gun" ahead of their new EP Lightning, which is set to drop this fall. They return on this track with the same brash rock that drove listeners to a frenzy on 2016’s Eviction Notice; front man Jake Pinto’s voice comes screaming like a set of wheels peeling out of a driveway, with the rest of the band fueling the roaring engine as they take your eardrums at 100 miles an hour down a desert road. Grammy-nominated engineer Claudius Mittendorfer mixed the track; he’s known for his work with Weezer and Panic at the Disco. On top of that, "Son of a Gun" was also recently featured in Season 8 of Shameless. Watch for Lightning to drop this fall, and listen to "Son of a Gun" below. – Will Sisskind
Okay Kaya shares “Habitual Love” video, tours with Amen Dunes
Having just released her long-awaited debut album Both, Okay Kaya shows no sign of slowing down for the rest of the summer. The Norwegian, NYC based singer-songwriter has shared the music video for "Habitual Love", a slow jam which follows the album’s theme of dual identity, trauma, depression, and love as a physical embodiment. Kaya took to the Rubber House retreat near New Paltz to film the video, in which she shows off her talent as a dancer and hides a secret love affair with a faceless, featureless mannequin from herself. The artistic clip matches the song’s dark vibes, which Kaya will present live on her upcoming tour. Beginning in mid-August, Kaya will take to the Northwest and make her way back east; then in October, she’ll fly overseas to play a few European shows before returning to Brooklyn for a homecoming show at Music Hall of Williamsburg. – Will Sisskind
Satellite Mode release dreamy single “Terrified”
Satellite Mode return with a brand new single, "Terrified", the follow-up to their previous release "Gave It All". Where the year’s earlier release hollowed out hearts with its thundering sound, "Terrified" — although about the love of fear — turns more major-key pop and highlights Jessica Carvo’s melodic talent and Alex Marko’s ear for catchy chord progressions. This marks the fourth single released this year alone, which gives fans hope that a new release following 2017’s Wild Excuses is on the way. The band hasn’t made any big announcements yet, however, they’ve spent the year bouncing from coast to coast, releasing videos and singles, and getting their music on Sirius AltNation – among other radio stations. But 2018 isn’t over yet, so there may be more from Satellite Mode still to come. Listen to "Terrified" below. – Will Sisskind
