PREMIERE: Sono Oto (aka Mark Henry Phillips) releases “Now I Know” video

Posted on:

You like chill grooves. You like New York City storefronts. You like those blow-up dancing men you find in front of car washes. If that sounds like you, take a look at the video for Sono Oto‘s "Now I Know", premiering here on The Deli NYC. The newest single from the artist’s March 2017 album Inheritance sounds like something John and Paul might have orchestrated. Retro comparisons don’t end there, either. Throughout the video, Sono Oto walks past time-tested storefronts of New York City, sometimes hopping through their doors to sample a pastry or mull over a ball of mozzarella cheese. By the way, does that groove sound familiar? If you listen to Serial or Homecoming, perhaps it does; Sono Oto is the pseudonym of Mark Henry Phillips, the composer for those podcasts. Lovechild debuts single/video for “Northbound Train,” plays Knit on 08.29

Posted on:

For those flirting with the idea of fleeing the bustling New York, Lovechild‘s new single and video "Northbound Train" might seem relatable. The psych-folk track has frontman Leo Liebeskind waxing nostalgic about the countryside, as he yearns for escape. The video shows Liebeskind and his band drive through the sleepy scenery of Upstate New York. Both the single and video provide a good segue from the pop of summer into the oncoming wistfulness of fall. Lovechild will perform at The Knitting Factory on August 29th, but you can hear their new single in their video below. – Will Sisskind

Votive Crown unveils video for “Pandemonium” + plays Pete’s Candy on 08.24

Posted on:

We last wrote about Brooklyn-based psych-soul outfit Votive Crown last year when they played Mercury Lounge. Now the band returns to the blog as we premiere their video for "Pandemonium", a prog-psych single from their upcoming debut LP. The video intertwines shots of the band with scenes of New York City and its people swirling in and out of existence; the sequences are accompanied by the track’s easy drum beat and brooding, swelling guitars, with Melissa Orr’s intense and soulful vocals skillfully navigating the song’s fierce tension and release fluctuations. With the video premiere comes a celebratory live show, which will take place at Pete’s Candy Store in Williamsburg on August 24th. – Will Sisskind

New duo Frills release chill summer debut single “My Love”

Posted on:

Frills, a newcomer duo to the Brooklyn scene, consists of two seasoned songsters who’ve given time to other projects; only now do they combine to release their first single "My Love." Dropped in late April, the track ekes summer groove in the style of MGMT and slow-jam Vampire Weekend. The New Zealand-based artists behind the track — Simon Oscroft and Dan Gibson — have years of indie experience under their belts. Oscroft comes from projects such as Midnight Youth and MOTHXR, while Gibson comes from Streets of Laredo. The band don’t seem to have any shows lined up, but "My Love" on repeat will do to tide you over until Frills announce a live gig. Listen to the debut single below. – Will Sisskind

Demure For Sure unveils flower-power fantasy single ‘Coconut, Rum And Banana’

Posted on:

Plenty of musical acts want to ride high on the Sixties-esque psych-rock revival to bring about some good feelings. Demure For Sure (the brianchild of NYC composer Zack De Sorbo) folds that avant-garde pomp and nostalgia into his newest track, "Coconut, Rum And Banana", released last week. The song — from a distance — could double as an outtake from The Beach Boys’ Smile or something from The Monkees’ discography, or as a more polished Ariel Pink single. Bubbling sounds and meandering flutes put the finishing touch on this flower-power fantasy, which might make you want to frolic through a field like a 21st-century Merry Prankster. "Coconut, Rum And Banana" will appear on Demure For Sure’s EP "Tie-Dye Shadows", which comes out July 12th. – Will Sisskind

It’s all to celebrate the release of Other Better Places, their debut LP, which includes short bursts of poppy emotion in the form of tracks like "Best Pie" and "Fortune Cookies."
