Thanks to all the bands that submitted through our SonicBids Open Submission, and congrats to the following bands that made it through to the final round of voting (which you can check out now in the right column!)

The Great Unknowns (pic above) are an alt-country band situated out of DC who describe their sound as "rock music for the open road." And the track "I Wish I Was the Girl I Was" just won the grand prize in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest!

And The Will To Survive, our most recent Band of the Month winners (interview still to come!) also made it through to the readers poll via Sonicbids. Interview with Redline Graffiti: DC Deli’s Band of the Month (January)

Posted on:

You’d really never guess that DC’s indie rockers Redline Graffiti came together as a whole only a few months ago. Having already released an EP in December About and Because, acquiring gigs at some of DC’s best clubs, and conquering the top of our recent band of the month poll (in one of the hugest turnouts all around,) we should be expecting to hear a lot more from Drew Moten (Vocals/Bass/Synth keyboard,) Ajene Harly (guitar), Ebony Smith (drums,) and Donald Martin (Vocals/Keyboard/drums) in 2012. And right now, we wanted to know more about them. So we got a hold of Drew, Ebony, and Donald who filled us in on everything from diversity, Synecdoche, New York, and the "inclined to be musical" vs. the musically inclined. Get ready for some truth in our first interview of the year...

Check out some tracks from their EP About and Because below, and own it via their site.

Album of the Month: Screen Vinyl Image “Strange Behavior”

Posted on:

Arlington VA’s darkwave duo Screen Vinyl Image emerge again with electronic shoegaze splendor in Strange Behavior (released Dec 2011.) IMO, Kim and Jake Ried are at the top of the leader-board when it comes to their genre, and after a listen- I think the SVI audience would agree.

One could simply spin this entire record at a Goth Prom night and have the place jumping with doom & gloom in SVI’s catchy rhythms as heard in "Revival", a gothic boom layered in pumping beats and fuzzy guitars. And "Rx" hits even darker notes, welcoming a good ol’fashioned blood rave.

"Stay Asleep" gets beautiful with lush guitars oozing over that beat that keeps you swaying on the dancefloor, before pushing through into another realm of intoxicating synth swirls and hallucinogenic vocal reverbs. Acoustic guitars come in on "My Confession" as Jake’s echoes melt into the atmosphere that remains from "Stay Asleep." Chilling yet soothing, and dark as all hell. –Dawn

DC Metal Band Gauchiste To Release Debut Album 1/17

Posted on:

Gauchiste, a metal trio composed of Tannon Penland (of Loincloth), Tomas Phillips and Craig Hilton, will be releasing their self-titled debut album on Little Black Cloud Records. The band, though based in black metal, describes the album and their music as more of a sonic exploration of the “otherness” or other types of music in the world. After meeting in North Carolina, the three members of Gauchiste created the band and made it into their “everyday routine” , adding composing and making the music into a crucial part of their lives.

Gauchiste will be released on January 17th digitally and with a limited edition physical run of 100 records and 100 CDs. Go to gauchiste.bandcamp.com for more info. -Amanda

Here he tells us about Aunt Mokey & Aunt Doris, an upcoming tour, and hopes for the next big wave in the DC scene. Now onto the interview...

Interview with Pressure Theif: DC Deli’s Band of the Month (December)

Posted on:

DC’s experimental trip-hop project Pressure Theif is the sole creation of Geoff Simons who likes to "wail on a mic and bang out chords on a guitar." And he does it well- with a discography of 4 EPs put out this year alone! No wonder he was our most recent poll winner for Band/Artist of the month. Relatively new to the scene as a solo project, we wanted to find out more about Pressure Theif, so we got in touch with Geoff who tells us about love for his hometown, seeing the Pixies, and his first band- 2214. Onto the interview…

Pressure Theif just released his 4th EP, The Tourist, which you can check out below.
