Makeunder shares new Akiyoshi Ehara (The Seshen) remix of “Inevitable Conclusion”

Posted on:

The Oakland based band, Makeunder has shared a remix of “Inevitable Conclusion” turned in by Akiyoshi Ehara of The Seshen. Ehara tells Atwood Magazine, "The vocals really stood out to me on this tune as something that would be fun to play with. I found that in a weird way a lot of the vocal runs seemed to have a subtle 90’s R&B flavor, especially when pitched up or down, which started to inform some of the groove. I’ve been going back to Timbaland and Missy Elliot productions a lot as of late, so some of that stuttering and syncopation of the beat was probably due to that stuff being a little fresher in my memory.”

Afraid Releases New Single – All This and More

Posted on:

Berkeley, California based band, Afraid has released a new track entitled "All This and More" from the split album with Maine based artist, Jared Fairfield, Eternal Motherfucker II.

Afraid was formed in a damp, spider-infested basement at the bottom of Portland, Maine’s Munjoy Hill during the summer of 2013. Since then, founding members Jakob Battick and Ryan Cutler have guided the band’s ever-evolving lineup through a handful of EPs and splits, including collaborations with Herbcraft’s Matt Lajoie, Swans’ Jarboe, and Sterling Black, and one paranoid, hallucinatory full-length, Sinister Vibes (Crash Symbols). In the summer of 2015, the group relocated cross-country to the birthplace of American psychedelia, Berkeley, CA, and evolved two lifetimes along the way. Currently, the group is laying low in the idyllic Northern Californian surround and searching for its own vision of “Cosmic American Music.”

Oakland’s Kamaiyah Supports YG at Fox Theater Tonight

Posted on:

If you’re looking to dance off those calories you gained from loads of Turkey and stuffing, head to the Fox Theater in Oakland to see Oakland’s own hip hop phenomenon, Kamaiyah support YG TONIGHT.

One of rap’s most promising emerging talents, Kamaiyah is injecting a fresh perspective and an unyielding passion into the genre. She’s been on a mission since she was a foster kid sneaking into the local Boys & Girls club to watch 106 & Park. “Most artists from the Bay rap like they’re talking to each other,” Kamaiyah explains. “I’m talking from a Bay Area perspective but to the world!”

“I had been working as a security officer, doing a 12-hour graveyard shift, and wanted to write something that would make it cool to be broke again,” she recalls. “Once I heard the beat, ‘How Does It Feel’ was done in 15 minutes. I felt something in the studio that day…” Kaimayah proceeded to go all out, spending “car note and rent money” on videos to promote the song. “You have to take a risk and believe something is possible,” she says simply.

Don’t miss this rising star open for YG at Fox Theater tonight. Support Bay Area independent music.

Premiere: JAKLYN – Syrup (TRKRNR Remix)

Posted on:

San Francisco-based soul/pop music artist, JAKLYN has premiered an electro-R&B remix of her song “Syrup.” The song comes from her recent debut, full-length album That One Girl, in which JAKLYN explores themes of navigating through the modern world as a young woman. Inspired by the societal pressures on women to be more docile, “Syrup” is a feminist anthem that will especially resonate with listeners who are still reeling from the results of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.

JAKLYN sought out Bay Area producer duo TRKRNR to concoct the remix after hearing their recent album Morning After. The remix is a decidedly modern take on the original 80’s-tinged, electro-funk version. It creatively blends futuristic, ambient sounds over a hip-hop backdrop, complementing JAKLYN’s creative songwriting and personal message.

This track comes in preparation for JAKLYN‘s Syrup – The Remixes EP, which is slated for release in early 2017. It will include additional remixes from That One Girl’s producer Erik Rico and from Bay Area musician and producer ZEBUEL of the Bay Area collective Smoked out Soul.

"Syrup’ is a metaphor for the sexist nonsense that women are fed our whole lives. The damage that this has caused is now painfully evident — 42% of women in America voted for a misogynist as president. I want my music to reach women on both an emotional and intellectual level, so they will be more acutely aware of double standards when they encounter them." –JAKLYN

Video Premiere: The New Up – Future is Now

Posted on:

We’re always pleased to share new Bay Area music with you! The New Up‘s dreamy new music video and single, Future is Now is moody, sensual and a bit psychedelic. Take a listen! You can catch them playing live TONIGHT at Bottom of the Hill. The show starts at 9 pm. Make sure you don’t miss their performance!

"This song is about how humans always think that whatever they come up with is better than what they had before. It reflects the lack of forethought that goes into a lot of decisions about our existence. In turn, if we continue going in that direction it will eventually lead to our destruction. It contains a silver lining of hope that it’s possible to wake up and turn that around." – Emily of The New Up
