When you think of a cello, ambient experimental music may not be the first thing that comes to mind; but after a listen to vocalist, Jordannah Elizabeth and cellist Kate Porter’s new collaboration, your ears will thank you for the experience. This bi coastal, Baltimore/San Franisco based duo, has created a four-song project that features a striking range of themes, all of which sound like they could be components of a soundtrack to a new-age historical epic. The longest track at 6 minutes and 28 seconds, "You Won’t Regret It," begins with a somber cello solo that slowly builds and gains power, soon to come back down and end with an ethereal two minute extended decrescendo. "What You’re Hiding" opens with an exciting hook that conjures up images of a sly, calculated tango that is quickly joined by layers of an equally beautiful, melancholic voice that adds a silvery airiness. The final product without a doubt piques interest, spurs inspiration and offers a view into perhaps the future of experimental music. – Kat Collins

A Million Billion Dying Suns – Strawberry EP
We may never achieve contact with aliens, let alone find out what they’re listening to; fortunately, thanks to A Million Billion Dying Suns, we can take a guess. Perhaps the matured lovechild of Animal Collective and The Flaming Lips, AMBDS delivers synthy beats and airy vocals in the form of a fresh EP. Reminiscent of a spacey sci-fi flick, the tension-building intro to Strawberry Letter 23 launches the listener into the milky way and out of their usual zone. The raging guitars wail on amidst a whirlwind of sound, twisting and twirling through a hurricane of good vibes. Plush is not only a perfect adjective for the third track listing, but also the title; with a rich beat that makes you want to dance and a sick guitar solo, you may feel as if you’re inside an 80’s discotheque rapidly orbiting around the sun. Wonderfully foreign yet blissfully cozy, AMBDS certainly transcends earthly limitations. – Kat Collins

Disappearing People Release New Live Single + Play The Night Light TONIGHT
Stealthy Oakland based experimental duo, Disappearing People recently released a live recording of their November 13th performance at The Night Light. This untitled recording is impressively mixed by the club’s resident sound engineer, Jeffrey Adam Wright, who made every bellowing note from founding member, Scott Johnston crystal clear and audible. Steven Sessler portrays proficiency and poise on the drums as he’s able to improvise and blend with the every haunting, and echoing loop and atmosphere Johnston created on guitar and with his vocals. This new track permeates a moody, noisy and imploding chaos that somehow holds its composure in a way that keeps you listening until the last second.
You can catch Disappearing People live, once again at The Night Light TONIGHT. They’ll be one component of a strong bill that includes two other great local bands, Clipd Beaks and White Cloud. –je

Lemme Adams Hungry Skinny Fox and the Law Electric Shepherd at Hemlock Tavern TONIGHT
Hemlock Tavern, a small bar that features great music acts, will be hosting a night of some bands bringing stylistic twists to the well-known rock and roll genre. Lemme Adams, who just released a new album, “Gorilla Back” this August, will be bringing some experimental psychedelic rock to the bill, bringing a trumpet and trombone twist to an otherwise eclectic daze sound. Hungry Skinny takes the classic blues rock sound and adds a dirty twist to it. Fox and the Law, coming from Seattle, bring a garage rock sound to the line-up, while mixing very unorthodox, but enchanting, vocals to the mix. Electric Shepherd, who just released their new single, “Glass Devil Blues,” use classic psychedelic riffs and breakdowns, a funky rhythm section, and a large amount of heavy drive to create their heavy psychedelic rock sound.
It’ll be a good night to catch some good ol’ rock n’ roll! Be sure to head on out! –Victor Casillas Valle

Sophia Knapp’s Debut Release of Alternate Version of “Close To Me”
San Francisco based musician, Sophia Knapp has just released an alternative version of Close To Me, which was released on her 2012 album Into The Waves. The new version, which takes on a funk aesthetic of the original, brings together a very catchy bass riff, a disco-esque sound, while cutting off the first half of the original song. This technique creates an overall dance-centric feel. While a bit different from her usual acoustic dreamy sound, it’s refreshing to see an artist take on such a huge change in sound and do it well.
Be sure to listen below and provide your feedback in the comment section to let us know what you think!– Victor Casillas Valle
A Closer Look: Mt Hammer
Finding a steady middle ground between The Black Keys and QOTSA, Mt Hammer’s charmingly gritty vocals and reverberating guitar solos enrapture after the first listen. Formed in February 2011 in San Francisco, the duo brings a classic sound revamped to the table. Their track “John The Revelator” features an aggressive intro that grabs you by the shoulders and snaps you to attention, only to be sat back down once lead Alex McInturff contributes gospel-esque vocals (“Down to the river/ remind him of the day/that God came down in the cool of the day/he was naked and afraid”).
“Icarus” features a riveting guitar-led theme, accented by beautifully soulful lyrics reminiscent of Kurt Cobain (“Why would you want to be the one who lived behind the sun/why would you want to be the one who lived inside the sun”). Their premiere album also features a dark, revamped cover of “House of the Rising Sun” with an edge. Classically innovative and refreshingly grungy, Mt Hammer is hitting hard. – Kat Collins
