Wicked Man Releases Single – Soil Leaking Water

Posted on:

Oakland’s Wicked Man is an undeniably unique act with influences ranging from Fela Kuti and Ali Farka Touré to the songwriting prowess of John Prine and Andrew Bird. The group’s new single, Soil Leaking Water is an eclectic blend of bluesy fingerpicking, soaring synths, electronic drums, and darkly haunting vocal melodies.

The track is birthed in sounds of sweltering, trance-like guitar licks, comes of age in its jazzypopfunk groove, and builds strength with eclectic frontman Yonatan Tietz’s soulful vocals, keyboard master Andrew Kunz’s synth work and drummer/percussive coordinator Max Denny’s self-sampled electronic functions. As a band, their sound has evolved and expanded upon the bold 2014 debut Fingership EP, growing into a more intricate tapestry of fantastically enticing rhythms that leaves us all chomping for more.

Give this track a listen. Hell, give this track ten listens. Put it on at yer July 4th backyard BBQ. It’ll grow on you, that’s for sure. Wicked Man will be releasing their next EP in September and touring the West Coast in the fall. More info is available on their official website, wickedman.com. – Justin Kohlberg

Bryce Dessner of The National Plays San Francisco Symphony’s FREE Outdoor Concert – 7/12

Posted on:

We’ve learned that the Bay Area has the unique opportunity to hear composer, Bryce Dessner (of the Brookyln based indie rock band, The National) perform his orchestral composition, St. Carolyn by the Sea (for orchestra and two electric guitars) at Pier 27 on the Embarcadero from 12-2 pm.

The event is hosted by the San Francisco Symphony and it’s going to be cool to see the city get a little bit of postmodern classical music whiffing and whirling through the air! Not a lot of people know that Bryce Dessner is a classically-trained musician and he’s written a lot of orchestral/classical pieces.

You can take your friends and family to this event…and this is probably the best cheap date opportunity of the year!

Painted Palms Release New Single – Tracers

Posted on:

The popular San Francisco based electro pop artists, Painted Palms have released a new single entitled, Tracers after returning from a bit of a hiatus. We’re excited to hear some new music from them and are equally excited to hear that they’re set to release their full length album, Horizons on September 4th on Polyvinyl.

Check out this fresh new track that is more upbeat than their earlier work which was darker, more washed out and somber. We like what they were doing then and we dig what they’re doing now. Check out this track and we’ll keep you posted on when they line up local live performances.

Premiere: Owl Paws – Eyes Of The Prey

Posted on:

The San Francisco based avant indie-folk rock band, Owl Paws has given us the opportunity to share their new ballad, Eyes Of The Prey from their upcoming debut full length album, Reservoir. Our recent coverage of Rin Tin Tiger’s new single and upcoming album ties into the endeavors of Owl Paws, as the bands are celebrating together with a double album release show at The Independent on July 10th with Growwler.

Owl Paws’ sound and rhythms veer more towards indie rock and less towards folk and country, giving them a crisp and contemporary feel. Their new single, Eyes Of The Prey is a sentimental and honest ballad that sounds airy, but is also mixed with a tinge of loneliness that seems to reflect a bit of the isolating element of modern times. The lyrics are somewhat abstract, but they do reflect the band’s understanding of the depth of human emotion and experience.

The band’s full length album, Reservoir will be released digitally via Bandcamp on July 7th. We’re excited for their new album and hope you’ll support this local band’s art and efforts.

Lee Gallagher and the Hallelujah Support Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas at Slims 7/8

Posted on:

The San Francisco based psychedelic gospel band, Lee Gallagher and the Hallelujah will be performing live at Slim’s in San Francisco on July 8th. They haven’t played a Bay Area show since April so if you’ve missed them, this will be your opportunity to experience their entrancing live show again.

The band will be supporting the fresh, postmodern blues rock band, Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas. This is going to be an exciting show because the energy and poignancy of both band’s understanding of throwback American music shines through their music. We love their interpretations of blues and gospel and appreciate the authenticity of their musical execution. These bands are pros and they play like it.

Lee Gallagher and Jessica Hernandez’ voices will pretty much blow you away. Make your way out to Slim’s on July 8th! You won’t regret it.

The Dodos Perform at Academy of Sciences – 7/9

Posted on:

The San Francisco based avant indie band, The Dodos are set to put on a special performance at California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco on July 9th. The band is continuing to support their sixth studio album, Individ which was released in January.

Individ is an intensely jaunty, tight sonic ride.” Long & Kroeber showed off a new set of skills in the video for the single, “Competition”, and completed a video trilogy with “Goodbyes & Endings”. Individ is the opening of a new chapter for the Dodos, recorded right on the heels of 2013’s Carrier, writing the material as they went, quickly, without questioning, drawing on instinct and the knowledge one gains from performing with the same person for nearly a decade.

One thing you can count on is that this show is going to be interesting and will set you in an environment that is very different from the average music venue! Don’t miss this special opportunity to see The Dodos in a unique artistic setting!

Premiere: Rin Tin Tiger – Dandelion Dream + News on Their New Album

Posted on:

The San Francisco based avant country rock band, Rin Tin Tiger is gearing up to release their third full length album entitled, Burial Grounds. There’s something very charming about the music Rin Tin Tiger makes. You don’t see and hear a lot of country music coming out of the Bay Area as of late, but RTT has a way of using light reverb, and alternative rock compositional styles that probably draws you in a bit more than a traditional country band’s music would.  With that said, country is at the very forefront of their sound and it’s great that they’re not afraid of that. You can hear elements of Sonic Youth and meanderings of shoegaze and folk music in their songs as well.

We’re lucky to be able to premiere a fresh track from Rin Tin Tiger’s upcoming album called Dandelion Dream. Not all music has to be thrashy or pop oriented. Dandelion Dream is a simple love song that shows no false pretenses of trying to be something it’s not. If you’re looking for a RTT track that is faster paced, check out their first single, Small Cuts that Bleed A Lot. Their music is confident, fun and a bit different. Make sure you pre-order Burial Grounds in CD or digital format via their bandcamp or Itunes.

Rin Tin Tiger will be performing live at their double album release show with Owl Paws plus Growwler at The Independent on July 10th.

Kymberli’s Music Box Celebrates Ten Year Anniversary at Brick and Mortar – 6/20

Posted on:

Local promoter and founder of Kymberli’s Music Box Presents, Kymberli Jensen has been one of the biggest reasons why San Francisco has been inundated with neo psych rock and roll shows for the past decade. She has booked countless bands including, Dead Meadow, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Spindrift, Cosmonauts and The Warlocks, and has brought influential bands like Rain Parade and Mudhoney to local venues. She has also been a booking support to out- of-town bands who relocated to the Bay Area like The Asteroid #4, and has a true talent for event coordination. She has also been known to be a big support of the early careers of local bands like Cellar Doors and The Dilettantes.

In 2005, Jensen felt the local music scene needed a female voice and her first show was with The Dilettantes (which included member Joel Gion of the Brian Jonestown Massacre) at Lipo Lounge in China Town. Other shows at Cafe Du Nord, 12 Galaxies and Bottom of the Hill followed.

Kymberli is one of the first female independent bookers in the modern Bay Area rock scene and has opened doors for current female bookers like Ash Reiter of Hickey Fest, Jessie Woletz of Seaweed Sway Presents and the young women of Our House Presents. Tomorrow night Dead Meadow, White Manna, Skeletal Sykadeliks and DJ Jodie Artichoke will be performing at Kymberli’s Music Box Ten Year Anniversary at Brick and Mortar Music Hall. White Light Prism will be creating the psychedelic visuals for the show.

Make your way to this auspicious event to give thanks to a promoter who has contributed to the Bay Area live music scene for 10 years! The scene wouldn’t be what it is without her.

Editor’s note: Kymberli was one of the first people to embrace me when I arrived to the Bay Area as a music editor and promoter. She and I have a lot of mutual friends and history in the local and national music scene, and she has been nothing but supportive. She is inspiring and has great knowledge of the history of Bay Area and southern California rock music. It’s my honor to be another woman in the music scene who shares the same passion for music, art and live performance. Congrats from the Deli Magazine San Francisco! -je
