Review: 36 Hour Pehrathon at Pehrspace 7/30 – 7/31

Posted on:

It’s been ten years since Adam Hervey founded the DIY venue Pehrspace, and a demolition notice from the property owners signaled imminent shutdown. But on July 30th and 31st, we weren’t there to say goodbye.

In its last 36 hours, space was as busy as it was on busy days. People came in and people hung out—as small groups of friends and budding scenes, but importantly as supporters of the space that always supported them. A day and a half was divvied up among longtime curators like Michael Vidal and KCHUNG Radio, who staged their final sets at 325 Glendale. From outside the plaza looked stripped, was stripped—inside a small team of volunteers led by Pauline Lay kept a tight schedule, even so far as to offer free earplugs and food while supplies held out. Like the twilight improvisations of Slow Rose and ensemble collaborations conceived by Aaron M. Olson (L.A. Takedown), Pehrspace brought individuals together, empowered them to create and appreciate. In its last 36 hours, the performers, curators, volunteers and audience were as we always were. And in the back of all our minds, though uncertain of the future, we eagerly anticipate the chalkboard set times to the next show.

Pehrspace continues to seek donations to successfully relocate; as of writing their GoFundMe currently rests just under $9,000. Listen to select performances from the 36-Hour Pehrathon at Cohen’s So Cal Rock Shows Bandcamp. – Ryan Mo

Second three-part [redacted] showcase with The Unending Thread at Los Globos

Posted on:

There are certain songs that speak to you when you’re young, and those songs are perfectly executed by The Unending Thread‘s split tape with Forget It. Perhaps it’s because they’ve had a few years to find their sound, but now that they have it is a significant voice for the young and reckless. That sound consists of strong relevant lyrics like “You never know what life has in store…I know I don’t know anything/ And that’s the best part of this journey that hasn’t happened yet” (“La Casa De Mi Padre”) and catchy choruses like “You always bring out the best of me” (“Dearest Anna”). Bassist Kim Reyes’ singing, often accompanied by guitarist Cesar Alas, drives a clear melodic path in the midst of the instrumental background.

The expertly arranged electric guitar, electric bass, and drums are so nicely played that they often compete with the vocals in the foreground, receiving much deserved attention.

Catch the Unending Thread’s performance at [redacted] Collective’s three-part showcase next week in celebration of the label’s first official mixtape. The mixtape will be released August 12 at the first show at The Smell and Saturday the 13th at Los Globos, where The Unending Thread plays with Utena, Gypsum, and Ruby Throated. First fifty guests to these two shows will receive a free physical cassette, containing 11 new and previously unreleased tracks by artists from the [redacted] roster. – Kaitlyn Tang

Bummer punks Panoramic release new album “Not Exactly”, tour with Talk, Tired Thanatoid

Posted on:

Panoramic are sad boys who rock, as well as sad boys who also happen to be DIY4LYFErs. Respectively prolific and intimately tied to DIY scenes of Orange County and the Inland Empire, members Alex Vercnocke, Austin Jenkins, Jonathan Modell (The Human Machine, Tririlla Recordings), and Matt Sturgis (The Palisades, Hillary Chillton, Model Talk) are running out to the southwest from August 5th till August 11th with mathpop duo Talk, Tired Thanatoid, coinciding with the release of Panoramic’s debut album Not Exactly. Recorded at hideout/traphouse/lovenest The Palisades, the quartet’s first full-length sees an expansion beyond the pop punk roots of EP "Rule of Thirds". Polyrhythmic piano solos and tight harmonies combine with quintessential tropes of the post-teen years including walking away from love, addiction, lost friendships, and suburban malaise.

The album is being released on cassette (/25) and on CD via Pacific Nature Records: each cassette and CD will be scented with pine essential oil. See their tour kickoff/album release party at Beatnik Bandito tonight, and listen to the first track of the debut album, "Not Exactly", below.

Fuzzpop Trio Iris Jupiter Tours for EP “Zero Cool”

Posted on:

San Clemente’s fuzzpop trio Iris Jupiter brings sunburned riffs and infinite sadness up north, touring through California for the release of their newest EP "Zero Cool". With member roots in the OC DIY collective and grassroots label Sun Terrace (Pedestrian, Ridgeway, SEIZURES, Red Curtain), Nadya Diaz, Devan Fuentes and Cole Sattler break you down faster than prolonged periods of direct sunlight. Blistering fuzz pairs with the bleak, opaque lyrics that’ll have you wondering if this might have been Billy Corgan had he not adorned himself with paisley and psychedelics.

Iris Jupiter kicks off their tour with a show at Beatnik Bandito on August 4th with Shutterings, Silver Spring, and Casual Friday. Listen to "Dream Helium" off Iris Jupiter’s newest EP "Zero Cool", out on Pacific Nature Records.

Live Review: Gothic Tropic at The Satellite 7/29

Posted on:

Simply put, Gothic Tropic melted faces during the release party for their new single at the Satellite last Friday. Building momentum off openers Green Gerry, Hooops and Terri Terri, the Gothic crew were in unbelievably top-form—I have not been so utterly blown away by a bass player in a long time, thank you for that! I have to say the band packed a much bigger melodic punch than I first anticipated and Cecilia Della Peruti and friends shredded through the night like they shared one mind. Cecilia’s subtle guitar genius really shines when she’s executing frenetic solos that teeter between classic rock and psych.

The band unveiled their new single "How Life Works" in all its refined glory towards the end of their set—a ferociously catchy jam that at first floats sublimely in an aquatic guitar melody, carries the listener through a little doom-and-gloom, and then ultimately allows the sun to rise again with some uplifting catchy chorus work. And the whole thing grooves. In a sort of dark, vaguely mysterious way. Particularly the lumbering, downward walking bass line during the verses. It adds a new shade to the already diverse musical palette that makes up Gothic Tropic’s output thus far. Cecilia and co.’s dark psych-pop continues to mature as their audiences grow and I for one will be on the look out for their next drop: Fast or Feast on October 28th via Old Flame Records. – Andrew Mendoza

Listen to “Room”, the newest single from shoegazers SHEER

Posted on:

Simi Valley shoegazers SHEER are back with their latest single "Room", their first since their debut album Uneasy last November. The captivating guitar line that runs throughout the song is enough on its own to make this a stand-out track in the band’s discography. Gina Almaguer’s vocals are as ethereal and lethargic as ever, a beautiful contrast with the relentless assault of guitars. "Room" is an excellent reminder that SHEER are one of the best modern shoegaze bands in the game.

"Room" will be pressed on a made-to-order lathe 7", available to purchase until August 4th. – Justin Ashby

Pehrspace hosts Pehrathon: 36 hours of music before venue’s closure

Posted on:

Southland’s music communities say farewell to the much-loved and respected venue Pehrspace at 325 Glendale, which will be demolished on August 4th. The venue is hosting a 36-hour Pehrathon to go on all through Saturday and Sunday as a final effort to raise funds for relocation. The farewell celebration features many long-time musicians connected with the venue, with concert blocks curated by Michael Vidal, KChung Radio, L.A. Takedown, Slow Rose, The International Adventure Club, Fourth Fridays with Mary & Eli, and Young Lovers—over 20 artists are slated to perform.

In a panel discussion last week with organizers of DIY venues The Smell, Pacific Nature, and Bridgetown, Pehrspace manager Pauline Lay lightly mentioned the prospect of attaining non-profit status as Pehrspace searches for its next brick-and-mortar location to call home. In the month leading up to its imminent closure, the music and arts space has hosted benefit concerts and an auction and moving sale to help with costs for relocation. Artpunk tenants TrapsPs even opened up their last practice to friends and fans earlier in the week at Pehrspace. In its ten years of existence, Pehrspace has fully supported creative expression and become a powerful hub for DIY music, art, film and more. Sliding scale donations will be in place for this last event ($10-$20); consider further donating to Pehrspace’s GoFundMe for its relocation and continued existence.

Steady Holiday performs at Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Concerts

Posted on:

After many years of collaboration, Dre Babinski shines steadily in her own light as Steady Holiday, starting her dream pop foray with debut album Under the Influence. Poignant, personal and touching, Babinski’s lyrics are buried under infectious melodies, but become uncovered after a few listens. Words like, “it’s a lonely world, I don’t want to be hurt” ("Under the Influence") and “We’re not alone/ You and I have our demons we can’t control” ("Overcast Waltz") resonate with a solo artist’s apprehension. Having performed at the prominent Coachella Festival, Steady Holiday performs again for all, free on September 1 at Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Concert Series with Unknown Mortal Orchestra. – Kaitlyn Tang

Stream the Debut Album “Fog of War” by Trillwave Transmigrant China White

Posted on:

Two months have passed since bedroom mystic Jamie Leroux quietly dropped the phantasmagoric three-year successor Visual Underground as Future Holograms. That trillwave release recalled a cathartic time for Detroit-native Leroux, who admits,"The constant change actually influenced the Future Holograms project, due to the longing of all the people I’ve kept close and how the distance effected me." Moving to San Diego nearly five years ago, the producer spends his first summer back in the Motor City, and has released another album’s worth of material, Fog of War, under a new name and a new aura.

White China’s first output is as much a virtuous revision to the past incarnations Yokan PopIcosagon, Sun Metal, and more as it is a retrospective nod to hypnagogic auteurs like Gold Panda, XXYYXX, and Clams Casino—caught at a time when dad aesthetics, Drake lyrics, and pastel colors equally conjure sardonic chuckles and nostalgic sighs. 2011 didn’t seem that long ago.

Listen to "Let’s Fuck Ourselves Over" from White China’s debut album Fog of War below and download it for free on Leroux’s netlabel/collective Silver Throne Records.

Looking Back to Lawrence Lindell’s “Raw Imperfections”

Posted on:

"I don’t like to be limited," says Lawrence Lindell in the interview snippet opening up his latest album. Composed of film score-inspired piano pieces, Raw Imperfections is a break away from the experimental artist’s comfort zone in electronic music. Lindell knows his way around a keyboard, from the gently-rising beauty in "Eighty Eight" to the urgency of "Unpolished Frequencies"—the album is also dotted with electronic pieces like "Creator", the hip-hop percussion of "Fist, Roots, and Rhythm", and the Baths-inspired glitch beats of "Young King".

The scores on this album range from calming ballads to thumping bouts of anxiety-ridden electronics. It’s a wide array of styles which show just how talented Lawrence Lindell is, and serves as a fantastic introduction to his foray into film scores. Listen to Emo Quartet Love Nothing’s Newest Single “Have A Great Summer (Calgary)”

Posted on:

Beyond vape memes and that seemingly facetious name, Los Angeles’ guilty pleasure Love Nothing boasts guitar crunch and drum blasts heavy enough to break your jaw. The mall goth foursome, fronted by guitarist/vocalist Nicholas Waits, stands at the forefront of revived sincerity in emocore, blending Circa Survive’s melodic embrace and Dinosaur Jr.’s neck-hanging, pulverizing tone.

Today, The Deli is proud to premiere their newest single “Have A Great Summer (Calgary)”. Love Nothing throws a release show on July 23 in the Valley (have I ever told you about that valley hospitality?) followed by a tag-team summer tour with Berkeley-ites Forget It. in August, with a homecoming show at The Smell on August 12th.
