Doomgazers SHEER plays Club Violaine with Mercury Antennae, Carisa Bianca Mellado

Posted on:

With their first music video just a week away, Simi Valley’s SHEER comes out to perform with San Francisco’s ethereal wave duo Mercury’s Antennae and dark experimental singer Carisa Bianca Mellado at Club Violaine. Resident DJs will also be spinning songs in tribute to Lush along with other classic ’90s shoegaze hits till 2 AM.

Since 2001, Club Violaine has kept its hand on the beat of Los Angeles’ shoegaze-dreampop scene, hosting local and visiting acts including The Meeting Places, Light FM, Chapterhouse, and more. For seven years, Club Violaine was hosted at Roberto’s Club near Chinatown until the establishment closed late 2013. Now it seems Club Violaine has found a new home at the M-BAR Music Lounge in Boyle Heights, easily accessible via Metro. Cover is $5 all night and doors open at 9:30 PM. – Ryan Mo

Media Jeweler release new single Autopilot from upcoming album

Posted on:

OC’s four-piece rock band (full-stop) Media Jeweler recently released their new single "Autopilot" from the upcoming album $99 R/T Hawaii, and it’s an epilepsy of sounds. Moving against the current of synths and drum machines, Media Jeweler’s tonal experimentation in this track includes brass melody, bass and guitar harmonics, and well-time dissonance that could be attributed as much to the late ’90s ska-punk movement as to Sonic Youth. Fight against the temptation to prefix their genre; this is rock music — perhaps not so simple, but definitely pure.

Media Jeweler have also announced that the album will be self-released August 14th. Sadly, no shows till the second half of July, where you’ll find at the Pomona dA Center for the Arts on the 24th, and Los Angeles’ The Smell on the 30th. – Ryan Mo

Synthgaze trio Light FM playing The Satellite 6.25 with Young Light, The Past Haunts

Posted on:

Josiah Mazzaschi’s band Light FM has gone through a lot of lineup changes since its inception in 1999. Nicole Fiorentino (Veruca Salt) played with him once. So did Jimmy Lucido (Nightmare Air). In spite of this, the artistic vision has been constant, and Mazzaschi’s current outfit is a pretty formidable power trio: drummer/synth virtuoso Alexa Brinkschulte (ex-Swimming in Trees) and bassist Nicki Nevlin, who also played with Fiorentino and was featured in Wristcutters: A Love Story.

That’s not to say that the past incarnations were less-than-stellar: Light FM’s performances have brought them on shows with the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain, The National, Ra Ra Riots, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Hell, even Billy Corgan threw down under moniker Backwards Clock Society during a benefit concert for Light FM’s past member Laura Ann Masura.

Historically, Light FM have always had a penchant for saturating their compositions with synths and all-around dance-y vibes, diverging from the guitar-heavy work of their Los Angeles peers and balancing ’80s textures with Mazzaschi’s airy vocals. But the newest EP "Pointless" (released 3.13.15) might be their best work to date. Dark titles like "S.S. Euthanize" and "God Fearing Man" and "Your Loss" bathes listeners with neon frequencies and sardonic lyrics, a fitting combination for the disenchanted, digital urbanites.

Listen to the EP’s title track below and catch Light FM as they perform a free show at The Satellite this Thursday, with Young Light (feat. members of Amusement Parks on Fire) and The Past Haunts. – Ryan Mo

Los Angeles post-punk transplants Sextile release single “Can’t Take It”, SD and LA shows

Posted on:

Guitarist/vocalist Brady Keehn and drummer Melissa Scaduto moved out from New York to Los Angeles in search of higher temperatures and lower rent. They found a bit of both, and then some. Keehn and bassist Kenny Elkin had done a Part Time Punks stint earlier last year as The Choke, which played out well, as Ohio transplant guitarist Eddie Wuebben moved down from SF. Four bodies were drawn together by the cosmos, and as the stars aligned, Sextile was born in 2015.

German post-punk influences and an affinity for the occult led to some heavy studio work trapping musique concrète atmospheres with the magnetism of motorik-inspired rhythms. In their first single "Can’t Take It", Scaduto’s ritualistic drumming evokes the scrape of surf guitar — it froths and hisses as synth notes dance like flames to Keehn’s mesmeric chanting, which quickly rises and explodes. Bodies break down. Emotions are purged and spirits are cleansed. It’s a sweet release that will rip the soul out of you, again and again and again.

Sextile will be playing this week at The Hideout in San Diego (6.24), and Friday at the Non Plus Ultra (6.26) in support of Australian shoegaze/dreampop band Au.Ra, and will ride along the West coast with them in the coming weeks. Listen to Sextile’s newest single "Can’t Take It" below, and look for their debut album A Thousand Hands on August 21st through Los Angeles-based label Felte Records. – Ryan Mo

Bring your dad to Dirty Laundry TV Summer Fest

Posted on:

Dirty Laundry TV’s Summer Fest is less than two hours away, and earlier last week they added the gaze-y Sunshine Mind to open at 2 PM, as well as San Diego’s ’60s garage/surf inspired The Frights! Kim of Kim & The Created will also be guest-DJing along with McAllister of KXLU, Mariana Timony of Lo-Pie, and Crystal King’s Andrew King.

Come out in the afternoon to The Satellite for a swap meet happening between 2-6 PM and get a last-minute Father’s Day gift for your dad from over a dozen vendors. Bring dad too — he’s secretly not cool to go golfing with his kids. Not down to wait in the long lines for a Father’s Day meal? HACHÉ LA will be serving up their gourmet burgers on-location, and we’re fairly certain PBRs will be plentiful. – Ryan Mo

Members of Dum Dum Girls, Blouse, Terry Malts performing jangle-pop covers at Sarah Records Nite 6.21.15

Posted on:

Members of Dum Dum Girls, SISU, and Blouse go halfsies on a new band, Boys Will Be Girls, for Part Time Punks’ Sarah Records Nite at The Echo this Sunday night.

Watch Boys Will Be Girls performing covers of the twee outfits Heavenly and Field Mice to commemorate Sarah Records, one of the seminal labels that carried DIY spirit and anti-capitalist politics through the wake of the ’90s with the power of guitar jangle.

There will be no creative liberties taken with these covers, as Sandra Vu (Dum Dum Girls/SISU) mentions: "We are staying faithful to the originals, so you can expect lots of harmonies and jangly guitars."

Corey, composed of Terry Malts members, will also perform select songs from the Sarah Records catalogue. Hungry Beat! DJs and Michael Stock of KXLU 88.9 FM/Part Time Punks will be spinning choice picks from the label, too.

Sarah Records was notable for its main contributors Clare Wadd and Matt Haynes and short-lived span from 1987 to 1995, effectively shutting down after its 100th release, the compilation album and booklet There And back Again Lane. The Bristol-based label survived a period of transition in music formats (vinyl to CD) and criticized the then-sexist attitudes of the music press. A history of Sarah Records can be found on their updated official site. Sarah Records Nite begins 10 PM with $8/$10 Advance/Door cover. – Ryan Mo

Michael Vidal performs at Amoeba Hollywood free tonight

DIY singer/looping-guitarist Michael Vidal, formerly of Abe Vigoda, will perform at the famous Amoeba Records in Hollywood tonight for free. The occasion: his Dream Center EP, originally released as a cassette in 2013 via Big Joy Records, got a refresher after joining Couple Skate Records earlier this month.

In his recent Amoeba interview with Crystales’ guitarist Billy Gil, Vidal talked about the re-release of Dream Center EP on Couple Skate Records, his growth in songwriting, guitarplaying influences, and his upcoming record which will be produced by fellow drummer Michael Tabor, and touted to be his "best material yet."

We’ll eagerly await more news of that. In the mean time, you can stream Dream Center on Spotify and find it in select record stores or online at Couple Skate Records. Catch Michael at Amoeba Hollywood at 6 PM! – Ryan Mo

Wade into Deep Fields’ new EP and watch them perform at Dirty Laundry TV Summer Fest

Posted on:

Orange-based psych-jangle sextet Deep Fields released their debut EP yesterday, and it’s a sonic nebula of wonders. Six songs of tantric proportions swirl like an acid trip in vernal bloom, mixing lyrics languid and reflective, even venturing out to space-rock frontiers with the epic closer "Other Half". Guitarist and vocalist Christian Peters goes all-out in the band’s first singles "Salazar" and "Leonidas", bassist Emily Monnig’s voice takes point in the hair-swaying "Oh Well", and both trade off in "Flat Business"  with instrumentation as bright as a field of calliopsis, courtesy of the brothers Higa, Brian Jackson, and Dana Maier-Zucchino. Descriptors aside, this EP is tight, and it’s free to download!

And if you like what you hear, you can also catch Deep Fields this Sunday at the Dirty Laundry TV Summer Fest, where they’ll be performing songs from the EP and new ones in the works.

"Any opportunity we get to share our music is always exciting for us. It’s what brings this labor of love full circle. In our live shows, the highlights for us are the new tracks that we’re just starting to phase in. It’s been refreshing to devote time to internal development and exploring new directions. Plus, playing fresh stuff has really got us energized, it’s going to be a fun time on Sunday for sure."

Listen to the "Flat Business" below, and come out to see Deep Fields perform in the early afternoon at Dirty Laundry TV Summer Fest — did we mention it’s dad-friendly too? – Ryan Mo

2015’s Desert Stars festival shines bright with ticket sales and Kickstarter

Posted on:

The nine-year-strong independent Desert Stars Festival opens its first wave of tickets with a ridiculously awesome lineup featuring Swervedriver, The Lemonheads, Lou Barlow, The Cosmonauts, and more. Founded in 2006 by Tommy Dietrick (Sky Parade/David J & The Gentleman Thieves), the first iteration of Desert Stars (then Clean Air Clean Stars) brought a strong sense of community and DIY spirit. Working with minimal finances and a conviction to showcase Los Angeles’ rising talents and alternative currents, Dietrick and friends threw the first festival in 2007 with less than 500 attendees who found out just through word of mouth.

In recent years, that number has nearly doubled, and for good reason. With past artists including Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ringo Deathstarr, Mark Gardener (RIDE), David J (Bauhaus), and The Black Angels, Desert Stars is the psych-rock campout experience more accessible than Burning Man and way cheaper than Coachella. This year’s lineup also includes bands from LA and Bay Area that run the gamut of alt rock including Drinking Flowers, Gateway Drugs, Feels, The Spiral Electric, Pearl Charles, and more to be announced.

The Desert Stars Festival will be held on the weekend of September 25th at Pappy & Harriet’s of Joshua Tree, with a Wild West vibe that favors natural landscapes over corporate sponsored tents and gaudy installations. Interested parties, bands, and vendors are encouraged to visit the Desert Stars Festival Kickstarter page where they’ll find a plethora of pledge awards, including a recording session at Dave Grohl’s 606 Studio. What more do you have to consider? – Ryan Mo

Bloody Candy’s new album “Dead Moon”, plays Echo 6.15.15

Posted on:

If you were taken by the earlier renditions of femme-fronted Blood Candy‘s "Dead Moon" and "Heart Attack" you’ll love what they did in their newest album. Released digitally on June 5th via Buddyhead Records, the album Dead Moon was recorded and mixed by Joe Cardamone (The Icarus Line) at Valley Record Company and includes studio reworks of songs only previously heard live such as "Starcrush" and "Honey". The album showcases Blood Candy’s blend of fuzz and reverb that mingles like lovers’ sweat and cigarette smoke — cinematic enough to be featured in a Lost In Translation montage, a Geek and Sundry show, or even your next mixtape/playlist.

Bloody Candy is supporting Tennis System’s Echo residency with Seaweed Salad and ASS LIFE tomorrow; come through and see them live if you missed them this past weekend with the Warlocks! – Ryan Mo
