Zone out with WL’s “Disintegrate”

Posted on:

Beautifully tackling loss and acceptance in a nutshell, WL‘s newest tune and accompanying visuals have the power to bring on mental calm and necessary contemplation. It’s soothing reel of waves pairs perfectly with Misty Mary’s ethereal vocals, creating a layers of hazy, intrinsic texture.

"Disintegrate" comes off of WL’s sophomore album titled Light Years, due out on the 28th of this month on XRAY Records. The composition of the album is a point of interest, as it was originally intented to be performed live alongside ‘Gandahar,’ a French surrealist animation by Rene Laloux. WL decided to team up with various local artists in creating their own visual element to Light Years, using stop motion animation, stereoscopic photography and 3D point cloud scanning as some of the mediums and techniques.

A screening of Light Years the film will be at Laurelhurst Theater on October 26th, with their album release show taking place on November 11th at the Spare Room.

Guitarist and keyboardist Michael Yun spoke on "Disintegrate" to the Grey Estates, who premiered the track just last week:

‘Disintegrate’ is a song about loss. It’s a goodbye with no goodbye, it’s a possibility that becomes impossible. It’s when the weight of the ocean is over you and you give in to it. The video is a simple meditation on the movement of waves. It’s a single shot, from a single point with altered time. We filmed hours of footage in both slow motion and time lapse, but this continuous shot just fit the feeling perfectly.

A Sheerly Prime Debut

Posted on:

The debut EP from dark soul duo Sheers is a beautifully ideal soundtrack for lamenting creativity and moments of vivid self reflection.

We premiered the first track from Lily Breshears and Grant Pierce, the brains behind the project, back in early August. "Depth" presented orchestral r&b, jazz and hip hop elements as a tease into the EP’s other three tracks, reaffirming Breshears’ actual depth as an emotional intellect, classically trained musician and the project’s driving force.

Piano riffs and paced drumming start out the EP on "In Case," as Breshears’ deep croon swiftly establishes itself as a partaking instrument. At times her voice barrels with full-toned body and when accompanied by Pierce’s cymbal play and gradual beat buildup (also heard on closing track "Kristoffer"), create heavy texture with only few tools.

Sheers will be joining Skin Lies as supporting acts for Seattle musician Benoît Pioulard‘s album release show this Tuesday at Holocene. Until then, get acquainted with Sheers below.

Mood Music: Bryson Cone – “Color of Love (feat. Cat Hoch)”

Posted on:

In a match made in true music heaven, the joining of Portland’s psych pop queen Cat Hoch with art-tronic outfit Fog Father‘s leader Bryson H. has led to this new track titled "Color of Love."

Under a different moniker, the song premiered in late August and has held up through the summer season’s ending days as a love song leading us into the fall. "Color of Love" shows their playful and cooly executed exchange of masculine and feminine vocals. When combined with the pairing of clear synths and electric guitars a la Metronomy, it creats an urbane blanket of delight.

Listen to "Color of Love" below. It’ll bring a bit of doting light on this rainy afternoon.

Lubec’s Cosmic Debt Out Today, Release Show Tomorrow

Posted on:

It’s been two years since we were gifted Lubec‘s lauded The Thrall and finally today, we get their second full length with Cosmic Debt.

Thematically exploring karmic debenture in life, Cosmic Debt gifts us the Lubec we’ve grown to love over the years; dreamgaze personified by reverbed string riffs, eruptive drumming by Matt Dressen and vocals that call for attention.

Four fuzzy instrumental-like interludes break up a pleasant distortion of tracks, led by layers of Eddie Charlton’s ripe vocality. Piano playing by Caroline Jackson adds a slightly delicate but necessary element which, coupled with her sometimes rawly spurted vocals (like in the album’s title track), round out the sound that separates Lubec from other "gazey" acts in town.

Lubec’s release show for Cosmic Debt is tomorrow at Blackwater with supporting performances from Talkative, Dog Thieves, Two Moons and Radler

Stream Cosmic Debt below and be sure to stop by Blackwater tomorrow to celebrate.

PREMIERE: Ky Burt – “Deep Dark Woods”

Posted on:

Capturing the true tree-lined spirit of the Pacific Northwest, the newest single and video from multi-instrumentalist Ky Burt, "Deep Dark Woods," expands on the calming aura of the nature surrounding us, both visually and sonically.

Recorded in a tiny house along the Willamette River in St. Johns, "Deep Dark Woods" applies classic American roots style with an avant-indie-folk breath in expressing the contrasting vulnerability and self-actualization experienced in solitude and times of strife. The song’s video, which shows Burt performing live at Fluff & Gravy and exploring through the local woods of Macleay Park, was shot by Brianna Barrett and does a mighty fine job at conveying the curiousity of journeying through Oregon’s shrub.

"Deep Dark Woods" comes off of Burt’s debut EP The Moon & the Sea, due out October 4th. His release show for the EP will be held this tomorrow, October 1st at Alberta Street Pub.

Mood Music: Sinless – “Cool”

Posted on:

Being cool definitely isn’t a sin for local guitar pop group Sinless. Their new track, which debuted last week on the Wild Honey Pie, is a fuzzy bedroom pop song calling back to all the 60’s era sounding love songs, hazed by dreamy vocals and adoring lyrics.

It’s the kind of track that you’ll want to play over and over again, especially on this chilly morning. Enjoy "Cool" below and keep on the look out for Melodie, due out in October.

Expand Your Mind with Zozma’s Psychedelic Production

Posted on:

The Deli Portland has had an eye on Zozma for a while, and we’re glad to see that more listeners have been turned onto them as well. Psych gets used more as an added descriptor to other types of genres, or as an element of an album, but there exists a lack of local, modern acts that define the genre.

Enter Zozma, a collection of spiritually connected beings that create more than just music; they create a movement. Their music roots itself in traditonal Middle Eastern piety, powerfully united with ethereal vocals and a mastered understanding of instruments otherworldly. You’ll find yourself fully consumed by its aural dominance as if to be in a trance-like state, exactly like what is imagined when thinking of the psychedelic tunes dominated the 60’s.

Be sure to catch Zozma during one of their occasional performances around town. Their live performances sound exactly like their recordings, elevated by a hypnotizing and engaging stage presence. It’s a musical adventure every appreciator needs to experience.

Congrats on the Artist of the Month win, Zozma!

PREMIERE: bdRm – “She Comes in Waves II”

Posted on:

No Movement Records is ironically making tons of moves, especially by way of label founder Jeremy Wilkins. Not only is he a very active member in two of the label’s bands We Are Parasols and Hawks Do Not Share, but he’s since taken elements of both projects to create yet another, called bdRm.

The first bdRm release, Are You Friendly?, explored dark and moody ‘jazztronica’ with existential themes flooding throughout the album’s lyrical content. This time around, we’re bringing to your ears a new bdRm track from the recently dropped Identité.

Identité is a conceptual darkwave album based on personal identity. It’s considerably broken down into four parts – the first focusing on birth, awareness and early onset damage, the second and third focusing on realization and healing, and the fourth focusing on peace and acceptance. Today’s track, "She Comes in Waves II," falls into part one.

It’s heavily brooding with a video to match, like a trip through consciousness. Check out "She Comes in Waves II" below and head over to bdRm’s Soundcloud to hear all of Identité.
