New Cold Fronts LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Fantasy Du Jour, the sophomore LP from Cold Fronts, is out now via Sire. The band still revs it up, and joyously rips riffs; however, they also take the time to step back, slow down for a second, and get introspective. Those lyrical peeks behind the curtain are tranquil opportunities to refresh and reflect, but the album still remains a very fun ride, with the mellower moments really setting off the full-bore rockers and vice versa. Cold Fronts is getting set to hit the road next month with Hockey Dad, and the tour will be making a stop in Philly on Thursday, June 14 at Everybody Hits.

Weekend Warrior, April 20 – 22

Posted on:

Last week, I Did My Taxes For Free Online, the new album from Spring Onion, a.k.a. Catherine Dwyer (of Remember Sports), was released via Sleeper Records. Tomorrow evening, All Night Diner host will be hosting its release celebration. One inherently gravitates toward the open-book, observational songwriting. There’s a delicate yet unfiltered honesty as these journal entry/stream of consciousness songs capture personality that can be applied universally. That knack to create concise, impactful imagery, accentuated by illuminating laidback touches of melodic instrumentation, gives these brief episodes a big impression. Snake Boy Gang, a.k.a. Madeline Rafter (formerly of The Original Crooks and Nannies), whose album Spit was also released via Sleeper Records, endears with a candid quirkiness. 2nd Grade, a new project from Pete Gill of Friendship, and the fuzzy-pop of Mortal Combat (featuring Remember Sports’ Jack Washburn) round out a billing you won’t want to write off. – Michael Colavita

New smth savant Compilation Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Music collective smth savant was formed last year by Philly producers Kilamanzego and Madam Data. Their monthly performance series Backyard Bxss has offered a common space for local beatmakers, showcasing experimental electronic producers and singers. The events are often live streamed on their Facebook page. As smth savant approach their first anniversary, they’ve released a compilation, featuring associated artists like Orion Sun and Mental Jewelry (both Mental Jewelry and Madam Data have collaborated with acclaimed Philly sound sculptor/emcee Moor Mother). The collective have facilitated some really exciting music in their first year, and this compilation is a solid retrospective on what they’ve already achieved. – Josh Kelly

New Track: “Ain’t Life Grand” – A.M. Mills

Posted on:

Flurries of delicate guitar marry a matriculating, warm bass and sandy percussion in A.M. Mills latest single, "Ain’t Life Grand". There’s a worn aesthetic and a sly sense of humor on display. It feels nostalgic – a comfortable melancholy that we’re all invited to join in on. You can find the former Blood Feathers co-frontman crooning his heart out this evening at Johnny Brenda’s, with The Cactus Blossoms and Frankie Lee. (Photo by Serge Levin)

New Track: “Mind Eraser” – CRUISR

Posted on:

The day has been dreary, but the music doesn’t need to coincide. “Mind Eraser,” the new single from CRUISR, exuberantly addresses the necessity of moving forward and leaving an individual/situation in the rearview. The pleasant, energetic approach jumps over the emotional/mental hurdles, and dares you to get down rather than wallowing in the downs. Hit that reset button, and enjoy. (Photo by Natalie Piserchio)

New Michul Kuun Album/Video Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Stayed Inside Today, the new album and video from Michul Kuun (a.k.a. NAH), is now available for your listening/viewing pleasure. Sit back, sip a beverage, and watch the world go by your window as the glitchy, electronic grooves take hold. Enter a weirdly wonderful, warped world where sonics come at you from a variety of unexpected angles. There’s a strange, futuristic spin as one assimilates to the unknown surroundings now being inhabited. Melding scenes of serenity and chaos, a unique atmosphere is encountered. Is the outside world being thrown off its axis, or are we?

New Track: “The Beach” – Tulpa

Posted on:

The trio of Tulpa recently shared its debut EP Cupiter. “The Beach” coasts into its closing position, with a head-in-the-clouds, self-examining point of view. It’s easy to throw on the shades, and leave it all behind with this one. But before setting yourself adrift, join them this evening at The Pharmacy, where they’ll be sharing a billing with Swim Camp, Tiger Castle, and Blinds. (Photo by Sexton Photography)

Debut Exmaid LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Exmaid, which unites Miranda Taylor (Hunchback, Full Of Fancy, Black Wine, Noun) with the power trio of Psychic Teens, recently dropped their debut LP, Fair Sex, via SRA/Don Giovanni Records. Taylor leads the way, navigating through narration with a deadpan sincerity. Meanwhile, the passageway is muddied with a menacing, primal grunginess, which looms like an ominous cloud or lingering shadow figure. There’s a brooding, ripping backdrop clearing a course for the clairvoyant vocals. A window of accessibility is opened, and brutal honesty is the result. You can catch Exmaid’s record release show this Saturday, April 21 at Long In The Tooth, where they’ll be supported by Dialer.

New Track: “Going To My Brother’s House” – Maxwell Stern

Posted on:

Perusing unfamiliar territory, “Going To My Brother’s House,” the latest single from Maxwell Stern (of Signals Midwest), glides in a roundabout, acoustic-folk stroll. Along the song’s evolution, it traveled the globe from Philly to Pittsburgh, to Australia, to Chicago, where it was augmented by Mother Evergreen to become what we hear now. There’s an unassuming nature as the tune guides you down a path. Picking up additional instrumental pieces along the way fully fleshes out its details, as the catchy, lyrical string tongue-ties. There’s a familiarity in realizing when you’re out of your comfort zone and the aspects that you notice in those circumstances. You can find Stern opening things up at Kung Fu Necktie on Friday, April 27, as part of a billing that also includes Shannen Moser, Port Arthur, and Friends of the Bog.
