Album Review: Pretend to Be Nice – Slutever

Posted on:

Fond of Beavis and Butthead and the American flag, self-defined brat-punks Slutever maintain their status of rad with the release of Pretend to Be Nice. Whether heard via download or vinyl (black or the limited and very sold out option of red), Rachel Gagliradi and Nicole Snyder’s Pretend to Be Nice aptly highlights the duo’s strengths, snarky diction and fuzzed out riffs, while capturing the energized finesse of a basement show. The one-two click start of “I Can Dream the Rest Away” captures the misgivings of a disillusioned romantic or a dreamer in a faux relationship, unfolding like an anthem of longing mixed with frustration and a dash of indifference. Dreamy ahs premise lines like “You’re sleepless, you’re restless, this will never go away,” giving Pretend to Be Nice’s longest a moody surf pop vibe that makes ballads by bands like Best Coast seem lacking and overly sweet. A cleaner cut of “No Offense”, plays out louder than Sorry I’m Not Sorry’s rendition with thumping drums and the occasional jangle of tambourine. Between the two versions of the song, the newer of the two bridges the gap between demo-style lo-fi and femme fronted noise pop like Vivian Girls’ debut or Las Robertas’ Cry Out Loud. “RIP Maple” (which is about a beloved bong) rolls in with crashes of cymbals and Gagliradi’s trademark vocals alongside guitar shreds. Ending with “So Prone”, the 7" is an impressive snapshot of the band’s growing potential, leaving fans waiting for them to reach “buzz band” status and start selling out shows. Below is the premiere of "RIP Maple" for you to check out, and you can also order your copy of Pretend to Be Nice HERE. – Dianca Potts

Where Is My Mind?: Nick Millevoi

Posted on:

“Philly guy Nick Millevoi always seems to be in the middle of something interesting – saw him do a lovely solo show a couple weeks ago.” That was a quote from our interview with Notekillers’ David First when we picked his brain about whom he was currently into at the time. How true that statement turned out to be! I had already heard of Millevoi from his work with Make A Rising (who were actually The Deli Philly’s first Featured Artist(s) of the Month). He’s working on a new project with trombonist Dan Blacksberg as the duo Archer Spade and still pushing the boundaries of improvisation with his avant-garde punk-jazz trio Many Arms (Engine Records, Majmua Music). Well, he also has his new solo album of 12-string guitar compositions coming out in April titled Black Figure of a Bird. The 6-song EP will be released by DC’s New Atlantis Records and Sunmagi Records as the first of a series of three collaborative releases which also includes efforts from Peter Brotzmann and Han Bennink, and Jason Ajemian. Black Figure of a Bird really spotlights this shredder and master craftsman making a statement while finding his own sound. He’s having his CD release party this Thursday, March 31 at The Marvelous. We had a chance to catch up Millevoi to talk shop and the absurd (or is it?). Find out why he thinks there is a very good chance we’ll have more hard proof in the next few years that aliens have lived among us (if they aren’t still living with us now), what cover song guided him down the path to his obsession with the guitar, why he thinks The Edge is the most overrated guitarist in music history, and much, much more HERE.

New Releases from Slutever and Hezekiah Jones Drop Today!

Posted on:

Slutever’s Pretend to Be Nice and Hezekiah JonesHave You Seen Our New Fort? are two albums that officially drop today and that we highly recommend for you to grab. The latest effort from much-buzzed-about female duo Slutever delivers with brash, punchy tunes full of pop hooks and endearing yet in your face lyrics and vocals. The maturity in the production of Pretend to Be Nice is certainly a step up from the raw-bones recordings of their debut Sorry, I’m Not Sorry making them really another young, promising band to watch on our beloved local music scene. And you should already know Hezekiah Jones a.k.a. Raphael Cutrufello. He has been influencing Philly’s folk/singer-songwriter scene for years now, and with his new full-length, you find the local music community heavily influencing his work – particularly the album’s producer Andrew Lipke. Sonically, there is less “folk music for the end of the world”, and more songs for the joy of living on New Fort. We recently interviewed Cutrufello and Pepe Jones a.k.a. Phil D’Agostino before their early album release party last month at World Café Live and chatted a little bit about their latest release, which you can read HERE. You can purchase Slutever’s Pretend to Be Nice via Bantic Media and Hezekiah Jones’ Have You Seen Our New Fort? via Yer Bird Records. Below are tracks from both albums for you to check out. Enjoy! – The Deli Staff

Gold Crowns Live w/Tough Shits, The Great Vibration & ‘tine-‘tine at The Station March 26

Posted on:

Tonight’s show at The Station might be the debut performance of the virtually unknown Gold Crowns, but its members have rocked the foundation of Philadelphia before as a part of Dark Horse & the Carousels, Invisible Friends, and Sweatheart for years. And they’re destined to be as rockin’, alcohol-charged, and naughty as the other bands (hopefully). Plus, with a big show that will see them play alongside The Extraordinaires and Juston Stens & The Get Real Gang already on the horizon, it looks like they’re making the rounds with good company. They’ll be joined by long-time friends the Tough Shits, who will be returning to a Philly stage for the first time since November. Rounding out the lineup will be lo-fi South Philly art rockers The Great Vibration and STDiva ‘tine-‘tine. The Station, 1550 McKean St., 9pm, $3 – $5, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Opening Night of “Animal Show” w/Eat Your Birthday Cake and Cow Pals at Pterodactyl March 26

Posted on:

“Animal Show” is Pterodactyl’s fitting yearly art show where a menagerie of beasts become the muses that are used to depict the artists’ projection of myths, fantasies, and ideas. For opening night, the DIY art space has lined-up a 3 ring circus of musicians to heighten the evening’s party. Eat Your Birthday Cake have been working on an album that is set to be unveiled in the spring. They’ve even debuted a lo-fi shoegaze-y sound that can be heard on new material such as “Kathy + Ken”. The Pterodactyl event will be the bands 2nd performance of the day since they’ll also be part of a Jazz Benefit for Japan at Rittenhouse Square’s Church of the Holy Trinity. So today will be a great chance to catch them before they unleash some April Fools at Danger Danger Gallery next week. Also on the “Animal Show” bill will be indie popsters Cow Pals, who recently released a new EP at the beginning of this year called Look Who’s Comin’, and Jersey’s Peanut Butter Lovesicle. Pterodactyl, 3237 Amber St. Box 3 Fifth Floor North, 8pm, Donations, All Ages – Bill McThrill
