Pitchfork Interviews Eric Carbonara

Posted on:

Pitchfork recently spoke with local guitar hero Eric Carbonara for their column “The Out Door”. The piece gives some interesting insight into the thought process behind how he makes his artistic vision come to fruition as well as background info about his music education and development. You can read Carbonara’s interview in its entirety HERE. Enjoy! (Photo by David Garland) – The Deli Staff

Capillary Action CD Release Party at JB’s April 10

Posted on:

Avant-prog outfit Capillary Action will be celebrating their new self-released album (via the band’s own label Natural Selection) Capsized at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. Johnathan Pfeffer along with his current lineup of conspirators that consists of Julian Chin (accordion), John DeHaven (trumpet), Colin Hacklander (drums) and Mike Harrist (bass) push the boundaries of what you’d expect from an “indie band” these days, and on their latest effort, the band delves into the world of free jazz coupled with fleeting moments of pop melodies. This combination certainly sets listeners up for plenty of surprises. The travelling circus of noisemakers will be taking the madness on the road throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada before heading to Europe for festival season and other club dates so this will be your last chance to see them for awhile. Scott Churchman will also be opening with his brand of disturbingly spooky folk to help set the mood for the strange as well as DC’s experimental folk act Hume. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Kuf Knotz & The Spinning Leaves at Kimmel Center April 9

Posted on:

Randomly ran into Kuf Knotz last night at a jam session put together by his guitarist Tom Copson, Jr. at Lickety Split. It was a fun evening with different people grabbing the mic to lay down a verse or two. Kuf told me about a FREE performance that he will be doing tonight at the Kimmel Center with The Spinning Leaves. If you’ve had a chance to walk by the Kimmel Center lately, you probably noticed that they recreated the base of the Eiffel Tower with lights in their front lobby. It looks pretty dope. Well, Kuf Knotz and The Spinning Leaves will have that beautiful setting as a background for their performance this evening. I suggest any fans of either acts bring their cameras because it should make for some sweet pics. I couldn’t find any details about the event anywhere on the Kimmel Center’s website, but it’s apparently going down. I love seeing shows in different rooms and unique settings. I thought that you might really enjoy this one. Kimmel Center (Front Lobby), 260 S. Broad St., 10pm, FREE, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

A Night of Record Releases at JB’s April 9

Posted on:

Tonight’s show is a rare occasion at Johnny Brenda’s because it will be a record release party for all four acts on the bill. That’s a boatload full of new releases in one night. But anchoring the evening will be Josh Britton’s Psalmships. The former front man of Sweetheart Parade has been mapping out his own journey in the solace of his own home. However, he has enlisted the help of Liz Fullerton on his latest adventure to add even more layers of haunting and longing to his “ghost folk” project whose songs already seem perfect for drinking whisky alone in a dark room full of heartbreak. Britton will be celebrating his split release “Anchored to Oak” with buddy Michael Batchelor who fronts Kettle Pot Black as well as singer-songwriters David Janes and Brian Flanagan (former drummer of Headsoup). Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Birthday Bash at The Bookspace April 9

Posted on:

When most people turn 21 they have a gathering among friends at several bars, dance at some clubs, and have a night of plentiful libations. But when you’re friends with bands in the local music community like Stella Sima is, it just makes sense to pack in some of your favorites in a DIY space to celebrate the night away. The Homophones will be taking time from the studio where they’ve been working on their first album as a solidified band. They’ll be filling the evening with plenty of balloon fun, slick dance moves, and their unique brand of happy melancholy. TJ Kong and The Atomic Bomb will also be bringing their recently unveiled dirty mixes from their upcoming album to life on this bill full of local buddies. And since El Fuego just hit the studio to finish up work on a new EP, they should have some scorching new material as well. El Fuego’s jokester Joe Reno will be pulling double duty tonight when he joins Julia Rainer in jamming out as part of their shredding blues rock outfit Flamingo. The band Headshop will be a merging of Illipsis and The Great Vibration while Mountjoy will bring it home with songs from their debut release You Keep Me. So the entertainment is covered for the evening. Now it’s up to you to bring some alcoholic beverages, a little donation, and plenty of good vibes for the birthday girl (and a gift wouldn’t hurt either). Where Is My Mind?: Moon Women’s Justin Pittney

Posted on:

Moon Women seemed to mysteriously pop up in Philly’s music scene with some quality shows and an eye-catching music video for a wickedly kick-ass track in “Listen Closely”. It was followed by a self-released cassingle (a word that we get a kick out of saying and hearing every time), but no digital format posted on the usual sites to be streamed or shared. While this may sound all gimmicky at first, we soon learned from our recent interview with lead man Justin Pittney that things simply just happen with Moon Women, and it’s probably best not to over-think anything that they do. Well, this “formula” of having no formula is working quite nicely for the shadowy post-punk trio who will be joining Black Lips and Vivian Girls tonight in DC at The Black Cat and tomorrow night in Philly for a hometown throwdown at The Troc. But before all this fun goes down, Pittney was nice enough to answer our interview questions and share some little known facts about Moon Women HERE.

Univox Headline Early Show at KFN April 8

Posted on:

Call me a school girl but Univox makes me giddy. Their contorted, spastic noise always excites me so, and whenever there’s a chance to catch the Philly act in action, like tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, I jump on it like a starving cheetah (OK, maybe more like a hungry rat). Outside of their live grinds, Whether I’m spinning their latest EP, Conan, which features the smashing "Conan" from their self-titled debut on ROIR, a sweet Golden Ages remix of the song, and the non-album, home-recorded track "Philadelphia Red Clay, 1945", playing their in-studio acoustic performance last Wednesday at YNot Radio, or checking out UNIVOX TV on their Tumblr page (they just posted Episode 6), it goes without saying you should follow my lead. And while you’re at it, snag the new album, Black Shark from the North Carolina indie three-piece Hammer No More the Fingers, and educate yourself on the DC/Brooklyn quintet Deleted Scenes, both billed for tonight’s show. Power Animal Cancel Tomorrow Night’s Appearance at First Unitarian Chapel & Share New Fan Music Video!

Posted on:

Unfortunately, Power Animal had to cancel their appearance at tomorrow night’s sold out show with David Liebe Harte (Tim & Eric Awesome Show) in the First Unitarian Chapel. Power Animal mastermind Keith Hampson was hospitalized last night with a rare form of strep throat. We’re sending him good vibes for a speedy recovery. We’d also like to share with you a new fan music video (below) for the track “Empty Parking Lot, Scary Dog, Snowing” from 2010’s People Songs that was made by Media Art Production from Australia. Andrew Keller’s Snow Caps will be taking Power Animal’s place on the bill. – The Deli Staff

The Armchairs Are Breaking Up!

Posted on:

This was a bummer when we heard about it, and we were hoping that it was a joke, but guitarist, singer and sometimes keyboardist Andy Molholt confirmed that it was true. Genial psych-pop outfit The Armchairs are breaking up citing “differing goals, differing musical and creative directions, increasing interpersonal tension, the law of increasing atrophy (the 2nd law of thermodynamics)”. You can read the rest of the message that they posted HERE. They’ll still be performing at Pilam’s Human BBQ this Saturday, and their final show will be May 13 at Johnny Brenda’s with pals Orbit to Leslie, Circadian Rhythms, and Dinosaur Feathers. Hopefully you can make it out and wish them your best. We are sure that we’ll find them involved in the local music community one way or another. Much love to The Armchairs! – The Deli Staff

Bardo Pond Still Going Strong at DDG April 8

Posted on:

It’s reassuring to know that a band like Bardo Pond, a beautiful Philly success story who formed way back around ’91, is still going strong. If their latest self-titled release is any different than the way things sounded back in the day, it’s only that they sound more muscular and refined. Not dreamy enough to be shoegaze and slightly too lazy for grunge, their guitars revel in a kind of supreme stoner-rock overdrive. Some may try and relate their music to trippy experiences (not that I can blame them), but it’s hard to determine how much of their sound is drug-induced and how much of it is just the results of searching high and low for a particularly gnarly fuzz-tone. They’ll be complimented well by New Zealand’s blissed-out Surf City and Toronto crooners Snowblink.
