Sun Airway Ready to Delight the Senses at FUC June 3

Posted on:

Tonight Sun Airway will elevate the audience in The Sanctuary at the First Unitarian Church with their transcendent electro-pop. Jon Barthmus and Patrick Marsceill released their debut full-length album Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier in 2010 and graced us all with misty experimental pop beats studded with introspectively poetic lyrics. The band’s warmly resonating vocals and electrified shoegaze rhythms inspire the notion of a hipped-out Bono joining an unfussy AnCo. This evening’s ethereal set will be sweet-talked by allied projections courtesy of award-winning visual technician Ricardo Rivera of Klip Collective. This innovative collaboration is certain to deliver a dazzling experience. Sun Airway will be joined by special guest, Baltimore folkster, Dustin Wong from Ponytail. Making Time 11th Year Anniversary w/Nothing at Voyeur June 3

Posted on:

It’s kind of crazy that another year has snuck up on me as well as our much-beloved freak out party Making Time, which will be turning it up to ELEVEN. Helping them celebrate another year of futuristic sounds in the Ruby Lounge will be long time buddies Nothing, who also have a new EP Suns and Lovers coming out on vinyl via Tokyo-based label Big Love Records (who have worked with such acts as Cold Cave, The XX, Young Prisms, and Ariel Pink). The EP will be released as a 12” and will be limited to 300 copies (100 white & 200 black). It will include two new tracks produced and engineered by Kyle “Slick” Johnson (Modest Mouse, Fischerspooner, Wavves, Creepoid, etc.) and a re-recording of the demo track “Last Day In Bouville”, which was produced by Cold Cave mastermind Wesley Eisold and Kris Lapke. You can pre-order the EP HERE. Nothing will also be donating half of their profits from the album back to a Japanese Relief Fund that Haruka from Big Love has set up. Below is their new video for the title track from the album that was directed by Ryan Schafer and Nothing’s frontman Domenic Palermo. You’ll also find Detroit’s The Dirtbombs and Austin’s Love Inks on the Main Floor entertaining the PBR and Sparks-filled (among other things) audience. So lose yourself into the night and let the radness begin! Voyeur, 1221 St. James St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Tapas – The Pre Picnic Jam at The Legendary Dobbs June 3

Posted on:

Tapas – The Pre Picnic Jam before the jam (the 4th Annual Roots Picnic) is being hosted tonight at The Legendary Dobbs and features performances from Dice Raw, Money Making Jam Boys, Rail Bird, Brass Heaven, and many more. Aside from the great lineup, the members of the Legendary Roots Crew will also be in attendance as well. Dice Raw, who made his first appearance with The Roots on 1994’s Do You Want More?!!!??! and has been collaborating with the group ever since, will be leading the pack this evening. He’s also teamed up with such heavy hitters like Jill Scott, Common, Mos Def, and Talib Kweli. Dice is currently working on his second solo album, which is scheduled to drop later this year, but in the meantime he continues to rock the mic with The Roots and Money Making Jam Boys. The Jam Boys features local natives Black Thought, Dice Raw, Truck North, P.O.R.N. and STS. The crew has worked together on past Roots albums, but officially formed Money Making Jam Boys in 2010, and recently released their debut The Prestige mixtape, which has true hip hop heads hollering for more. They will also be joined by NYC’s Rail Bird, the brainchild of bandleader Sarah K. Pedinotti, a.k.a. S.K.P., who mixes traditional pop elements with experimental ideas and her own unique voice to form the group’s distinctive sound, and Philly’s own Brass Heaven, who combine a variation of New Orleans Jazz (without its traditional syncopated drum beats) with a more laidback smooth and grooving style. So swing on by tonight and see what kind of surprises ?uestlove and company have in-store for us before their big all-day picnic tomorrow. The Legendary Dobbs, 304 South St., 6pm, $10, 21+ – Dan Brightcliffe

Help Slutever Do America (Kickstarter Campaign)!

Posted on:

The “ladies” of Slutever are heading out on tour this summer to “Do America”, but first they need your money. And in return, they promise to give you lots and lots of sex (just kidding – you pervs who were psyched about that statement). But they have come up with more interesting ways to barter for your generosity like prank calling your enemies, taking you on a dream date of bowling, making you slutty outfits, being your slaves (nothing kinky), and much, much more as well as the usual merch stuff. Check out their video below and head over HERE to contribute to making America a less safer place. – The Deli Staff

Banned Books & The Devil’s Horns Kill the Matador at JB’s June 2

Posted on:

Prone to catchy riffs and clever beats, Philly/South Jerz outfit Banned Books is easily memorable. A new breed of noise rock – Banned Books’ latest cuts revive chords reminiscent of the Blood Brothers nix the heavy-handed dissonance. Add in math-y backbeats that keep listener’s ears alert and you’ve got the basic formula to Banned Books at their best. The thwarting start of “Mission Creep” eases into a buzzing psych anthem that drips with lyrical charm. In a similar fashion, “Intergalactic Singalong”, off Man Maker showcases Queen-esque vocals, dramatic and quipped. Banned Books will be opening for recent tour mates and the high energy quirkiness of The Devil’s Horns Kill the Matador, who have made the hallowed trek to record a Daytrotter Session (that has yet to be released). If you are fans of earlier Man Man, then you’ll probably get what they have up their sleeves. They’ll also be joined by the considerably quieter chants of Mike Bruno’s Black Magic Family and Brooklyn’s Spanish Prisoners. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Dianca Potts

The Deli’s June Album of the Month: Black Girls – Blackhawks/Radiator Girls

Posted on:

Local lo-fi outfit Blackhawks go East meets Midwest for their latest split cassette Black Girls. Released on the LA-based label Two Michael Jordans (MJMJ Records), Blackhawks’ latest couples the "garageland" antics of Minneapolis outfit Radiator Girls. Cohesive and quirky, Black Girls’ fuzzed out vocals and buzzing riffs are genuine and earnest, mixing the perfect dose of awkward dissonance with each track. Opener “Sunday Morning” blends countrified, twangy guitar riffs with airy vocals and instrumentation to lure listeners into the joint effort. Discernibly more polished than Side B, Blackhawks shaking intro to “Indigo” shimmers melancholic and longing with undertones of hope implied by the chilled out croon of “I know I could be someday…/well I do hope I do.” Bending riffs and atmospheric sounds reminiscent of AnCo feel familiar yet essential to the album’s second, leading into the semi-acoustic swell of fittingly psyched out Spaceman 3 cover “More Rainbows”. The weight of “More Rainbows” distributes itself in the tide-like shuffle of its progression, bringing to mind Brooklyn’s Beach Fossils with its room-noise production and surf pop subtleties. Synonymous with the emotives of HoZac’s Garcia and Everton, Blackhawks’ melodic romantics unfold with a similar wanting, lush yet understated. Needless to say, Side A of the cassette plays out crisp and forthright, making the most of precise lyrics, sincerity, and heartfelt beats. With the A-side fading out with the humming vibes of “HIGHHH”, the cassette’s flipside begins with an endearing frustration by way of delectably nervous tempos and jangly riffs. With the start of “Eerie Body”, the vocal delivery of Radiator Girl’s mastermind Nick Henderson sounds out in howls and near shouts. Amplified by garage-y licks on guitar (think of Oakland’s Shannon and the Clams), “Eerie Body” is a sweet chant with rough edges that beg not to be smoothed out. “Go Pills” slow and raspy start expands to layered repetition, casting Henderson’s repeats of “I want her anyway” into vividly wrenching yelps. Like Vermont’s Happy Birthday or No Bunny slightly sedated, Radiator Girls’ antics are hot quirk at its best. In short, MJMJ’s Black Girls’ is a cassette rarity. You can purchase the cassette or download the tracks HERE. – Dianca Potts

Lewis & Clarke Go Exploring at KFN June 1

Posted on:

If you missed Delaware Water Gap, PA’s Lewis & Clarke when they last came to Philly for the Folkadelphia series, then you probably shouldn’t sleep on tonight’s performance at Kung Fu Necktie. Lou Rogai and crew will be taking a break from recording their new album, which will be released via La Société Expéditionnaire, to do a run of shows with labelmate Chicago’s Daniel Knox, who is fresh off a UK tour with The Handsome Family. Joining them will also be Judson Claiborne, who will also be visiting from the Windy City. Expect one of my favorite local watering holes to be filled with plenty of moody, introspective folk to lament about this already long, hot summer. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
