Mad Decent Block Party 2011!

Diplo tweeted yesterday that the Mad Decent Block Party will be coming to Philly on Saturday, August 6 as well NYC (July 30), Chicago (Aug. 13), and LA (Aug. 20), and that full info would be announced on Monday. We had already heard earlier this spring from PhilaMOCA’s Gavin Hecker that it would not be returning to its usually spot in front of the former Mad Decent Mausoleum. Well, according to Phrequency, its new location will be in front of the Starlight Ballroom, and there will be performances this year by Diplo, Flying Lotus, Gang Gang Dance, Das Racist, and more. Where Is My Mind?: Hair Rocket’s Chris Blasucci

It’s been a bazaar journey watching Hair Rocket evolve from a song to a warped artistic movement to a band. But it has certainly been an enjoyable one. Multi-instrumentalist, pyrotechnician and mastermind Chris Blassucci surprised listeners and the local media with his impressive debut EP Novelty, and now he’s back with his new Kickstarter-funded LP Punishment Cookie which is full of tasty morsels of power pop goodness. You can watch Hair Rocket leave it all on stage tomorrow night at Bookspace, but hopefully they won’t burn the whole place down. We had a chance to catch up with the always unpredictable Blasucci to find out what the hell is a punishment cookie, why he dropped out of Berklee, what is like going to the bathroom in your pants, and much more HERE.

Pink Skull Releasing New Album Psychic Welfare on Sept. 13

Pink Skull just announced that they’ll be releasing their third studio album and second with RVNG Intl. titled Psychic Welfare. The full-length was produced by Pink Skull and Uniform Recording’s Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War On Drugs). The physical version of the album will be released on September 13 with a 48” x 96” heavy-stock pull out poster, and the digital version will be available on September 27. We just wanted to give you a heads up on a (life) FANTASTIC local lineup coming to The Troc! Grandchildren and West Philadelphia Orchestra were recently added to the Man Man show on Friday, August 5. You can purchase your tickets HERE, which we highly recommend doing so ahead of time because this is currently the only scheduled hometown show for Man Man and Grandchildren for the rest of the summer. FYI on DIYs in PHL: Flash Mob Productions

The words “flash mob” may bring uneasiness to those who walk the streets of Philly these days. Though some may spend their days pontificating about its inaccurate label, Flash Mob Productions’ David Kiss embraces the term and spends his days/nights working to spin it in a positive light in our local indie music scene by booking shows and helping expose young artists to new fans. His lofty goal to one day compete with monster corporations like Live Nation and not be "one of those promoters" is certainly ambitious, but his DIY mentality is something that you might want to support and commend. Well, you can buy him a drink and/or pack him a bowl tonight at KFN when he hosts the kick off to Penrose’s “Trifecta” tour. Gallo & Hull Join Forces at JB’s July 7

Truthfully, I love nothing more than unexpected collaborations. Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson. Jack White and Loretta Lynn. Kanye West and Justin Vernon. Whether or not you’re a fan of one or all parts, these musical oddities typically bear bad ass fruit. And now, the same goes for Gallo & Hull – at least, that’s what we can only expect from their special gig tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The pair – that is Toy Soldier’s Ron Gallo and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Jordan Hull – met years ago after a clash with some strange folks during an early dawn in Memphis, causing Gallo and his crew to seek refuge in Hull’s Nashville home. It was there they connected over a mutual admiration for blues, soul, and vintage rock ‘n’ roll (plus, of course, their respective sonic creations), fostering the framework for a beautiful friendship that spanned numerous tours through the years. And, last fall, they took that up a notch when they started work on their Midweek Mountain Getaway split in Philadelphia, where Hull set up camp on Gallo’s couch for a few weeks. Supported by Boston’s Boy Without God and local pop-rock outfit the Fleeting Ends, Gallo & Hull should prove to be one hell of a collaboration. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. New Music Video: “Baby’s Arms” – Kurt Vile & Behind-the-Scenes Footage

Kurt Vile has a new music video for the song “Baby’s Arms” from Smoke Ring for My Halo. It was made by acclaimed fashion photographer and music video/commercial director Todd Cole, who is known for his work with such diverse talents as Charlotte Gainsbourg and No Age to Rodarte and Commes Des Garcons. You can check out the new video below as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the making of it for the Windows Phone presents “The Me Series,” a collection of short film essays exploring a day in the life of creative Windows Phone users. It was completely shot using the Windows Phone camera in Cole’s hometown of Los Angeles, and explores the love story between a young couple living their everyday lives in East LA. Peasant Headlines w/a Full Band at WCL July 6

Peasant is the moniker of working class singer, songwriter and producer Damien DeRose. The young artist built his reputation and honed his songwriting skills performing on bills alongside the class of talented musicians that emerged from the Bucks County indie music scene like Drink Up Buttercup, Illinois, and Adebat. After recording and self-releasing his debut album, Fear Not, Distant Lover, Derose signed to Paper Garden Records releasing his first “official” label album 2008’s On the Ground to much critical acclaim which sent him and his genteel voice on national and international tours. His music has also been featured on CBS, ABC, Showtime, and MTV shows including Bones, The United States of Tara, Kyle XY and Private Practice as well as by Apple, Blackberry, and Starbucks. DeRose has been in the studio this year with other musicians for the first time, and he’s returned with a full backing band consisting of Alex Bortnichak on drums, Joe Montone on keys and shakers, and Mike Ruhl on bass.
