New Music, Emerging from your Local Scene

Take a listen to the ambient and eerily tranquil remix of Philly transplant Strand of Oaks’ “Sterling” by Nihiti. It’s a hauntingly beautiful interpretation of the track from Pope Killdragon. You can stream it HERE via Tiny Mix Tapes. Enjoy!

With so many tours and shows bundled in exclusive package deals by big agency booking agents (definitely one of the many problems with the music industry), it’s always nice to see local acts getting their opportunity to support and shine in front of larger audiences when big name artists comes through town. Tonight WrittenHouse will be opening for the legendary Nas and Damian Marley. The Germantown outfit of old buddies consisting of producers Chris Conway, Kush Shalimar and emcee Charlie K (with hypeman Somerville Sleeves during live performances) will get their chance to win over some new fans with their jams which are heavily influenced by hip hop’s golden era. It’s just a shame that you can’t find the group’s name (as well as Solomonic Sound System) anywhere on the Electric Factory’s or Ticketbastard’s websites. Well, get there early and show a little hometown love by making plenty of noise for the locals. Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St., 8pm, $39.50 (plus fees), All Ages – H.M. Kauffman
Purling Hiss just announced a hefty fall tour which includes a jaunt through Europe and U.S. dates with local pals The War on Drugs and Carter Tanton from the band Tulsa (Park the Van). You can check out the dates that have been announced so far below. Purling Hiss’ next Philly show will be on August 20 at Johnny Brenda’s with Pearls & Brass and Serpent Throne. If you really can’t wait for the Mad Decent Block Party tomorrow, then head over to UBIQ tonight for its official pre-party with DJ sets by Dirty South Joe and Uncle Ron. There will also be FREE Heineken Light, well, until supplies last. (BTW: I actually prefer Heineken Light over regular Heineken. Does anyone else feel that way?) The pre-party is also FREE. Just a reminder to RSVP HERE for tomorrow’s main event to avoid any chance of getting shut out. Cheers! UBIQ, 1509 Walnut St., 6 – 10pm, FREE, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

The Dark Wave revival is upon us. Revamped by pioneers like Give Up the Ghost’s former front man Wesley Eisold, the synth drenched hums of Eisold’s latest act, Cold Cave, renders summer nights decadently retro with a hint a gloom. With the recent release of Cold Cave’s second LP Cherish the Light Years via Matador, Eisold’s moody lyricism brings to mind Ian Curtis’ diction, Depeche Mode’s New Wave genius, and Bauhaus’ ultra-goth element of cool. From the cheerful buzz of “Life Magazine” to the pulsating glitz of “Confetti,” Cold Cave’s appeal lies partially on Eisold’s knack for crafting seductively dark backbeats you can feel and won’t forget. Premised by flawless octaves and provocative chants by Austra, tonight’s final installment of Making Time for the summer is slated to be epically rad.
