Nick Millevoi to Debut New Pieces at Highwire Gallery Aug. 20

Posted on:

Incendiary guitarist Nick Millevoi has proven to be a man of many strings throughout the years. And from his explosive trio Many Arms debuting a set of new music at their August 3rd show at Johnny Brenda’s to the debut of his eerily disturbing new video for the track “Bruxer” (which you can check out below) from his highly-praised solo album, Black Figure of a Bird (you can read the review of our April Album of the Month HERE), August has already proven to be a productive month for the artist. To move things along in that trend, Millevoi will be debuting some new pieces when he performs an intimate show at Highwire Gallery tonight. And it will be an especially interesting show since he’ll be joined by Traits, the experimental noise duo of Ben Remsen (Little Ocean, Big Ocean) and Sebastian Petsu (Rain of Belle Isle). Highwire Gallery, 2040 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $6, 21+ – Bill McThrill

The National Rifle Kickstarter Preview Party at KFN Aug. 20

Posted on:

Interested in helping a local band in making a full-length album? Then learn how in style as The National Rifle have a preview party for their Kickstarter Campaign at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. The band will be stepping into the studio with Brian McTear of Miner Street Studios to record their first LP that is set to be released at the start of 2012. Like many independent artists these days, The National Rifle are turning to Kickstarter for the much-needed help and will surely have some pretty interesting reward incentives. They will also use this evening’s showcase to share some of their new material with their supportive friends and fans. The National Rifle will be joined by Brooklyn’s Backwords and The Powder Kegs, who will be performing what will most likely be their last show for awhile. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7:00pm, $8, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Slutever Homecoming at JB’s Aug. 19

Posted on:

Slutever are back from doing America, and they’ll be headlining at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. While some may have been following their adventures in 140 characters or less, you should really come hear for yourself what performing almost every night can do for their chops. Hopefully they’ll have a chance to rest up before belting out favorites like “So Prone” and “No Offense,” but I’m sure that once they see some friendly familiar faces in the crowd, it will give them that much-needed boost of energy. They’ll be joined by Bedroom Problems, the fleshed out basement (bedroom) project of WPRB DJ/Her Jazz blogger Maria Tessa Sciarrino which includes backing by members from A Sunny Day in Glasgow, This Radiant Boy, and April Disaster. She’ll have the opportunity to test out her pipes from her recent voice lessons with Michael Kiley (The Mural and The Mint, Cordalene). The Sniffles (Trey McCoy of TV Dinner, Scotty Leitch of Pirouette, and Mike V of Seminal Youth Madness) will also be opening the evening with their high-energy somewhat apathetic grunge-y indie rock. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Gemini Wolf & Oh! Pears Get Experimental at KFN Aug. 19

Posted on:

Gemini Wolf is quite an interesting and versatile group. Lead by the duo of improvisers/singers Pandar and Mikronesia, the outfit is made up of an ever-changing lineup of all-star Philadelphia musician who create a unique blend of afro-beat, krautrock, ambient, and folk music that can only be described as Gemini Wolf. The band’s latest LP, Infinite Sand Dunes, is their most experimental effort yet. Side one features a 4 song suite with vocals, while side two is an instrumental journey reminiscent of the band’s hiking trip/recording session in a desert. Also on the bill is Oh! Pears , a baroque pop outfit lead by Corey Duncan, former Pattern Is Movement guitarist. Duncan is back on the Philly stage after his trek through Europe earlier this summer with highlights like opening for and hanging with TV on the Radio (who are “officially the nicest band” that he ever met) and lowlights like his car breaking down in Italy (but there are truly worst places for that to happen, right?). Looking forward to seeing which versions of these fine acts show up to perform at Kung Fu Necktie this evening. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Frankford Ave,$8, 7:30 pm, 21+Dan Brightcliffe

The War on Drugs Record Release Party at JB’s Aug. 18

Posted on:

By now, you should already know that The War on Drugs is having their Record Release Party tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. But just in case for some reason that you’ve been disconnected from the internet and the outside world, I didn’t want you to miss out on what is going to be a fantastic evening of musicianship. I cannot express enough how much I’ve been enjoying the classic feeling yet forward thinking Slave Ambient. The album might have been a long excruciating wait, but you had to know that mastermind Adam Granduciel would never release anything until he felt it was ready. Well, he was finally ready. Now let’s see if the rest of the world is. (You can read about his meticulous recording process and more in our recent interview with Granduciel HERE.) The War on Drugs will be joined by pal Kiel Everett (bassist for Purling Hiss) whose side project Tin Horses should be a perfect compliment to the evening. Their debut album American Radiance is definitely one worth listening to over and over again (our review of it is available HERE). The local acts will also be hosting Caveman whose iridescent self-released full-length CoCo Beware helped earn them the cover of our latest edition of The Deli Magazine’s NYC print (which you can take a gander at online HERE) as well as accolades from major media outlets like Pitchfork, Fader and The New York Times. BTW: Yes, that’s a lot of Deli links that you need to check out, but at least, you’ll learn why this evening is not to be missed! Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

Daytrotter Session w/Des Ark

Posted on:

Check out the achingly beautiful Daytrotter Session from Des Ark. You may have recently seen their name on The Deli site and taken a listen to their music when they were nominated in our Featured Artist(s) Poll about over a month back. Led by Durham, NC transplant Aimee Argote, you’ll find how the power of music can truly save lives. Just read the inspirational story from the intro of an article about what helped end Argote’s dispute with her father regarding choosing making music as her career HERE or swing by Daytrotter and feel it for yourself. She’ll also be performing solo at Daytrotter’s Barnstormer 5 on Saturday, August 27 when the tour stops in Brooklyn. But until then, go download her session HERE. Enjoy! The 50th Annual Philadelphia Folk Festival Kicks Off Tonight

Posted on:

People should already be making their way to the 40-acre location at Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township (near Schwenksville, PA) for the Philadelphia Folk Festival’s 50th Anniversary presented by the non-profit Philadelphia Folksong Society in conjunction with Point Entertainment. The four-day music and art festival will be kicking things off with an exclusive concert tonight for attendees with camping tickets featuring Terrance Simien and The Zydeco Experience, Amanda Shires, and Joel Plaskett Emergency. For the rest of the folks who aren’t planning to build a home this weekend as part of the makeshift town, the music will begin tomorrow morning. You’ll be treated to local favorites like Hoots & Hellmouth and Birdie Busch intertwined among legends like Arlo Guthrie and Levon Helm as well as up-and-comers like Justin Townes Earle and Trombone Shorty. It’s simply a chill weekend to get away from the grittiness of city life. Hopefully the predicted thunderstorms will hold off avoiding putting a damper on things, but I’m sure that it won’t keep the alcohol from flowing. Old Pool Farm, Upper Salford Township, Thurs. – Sun., $10 – $188, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Creepoid and Arches Journey Along a Psychedelic Spectrum at KFN Aug. 18

Posted on:

Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie features two premier local acts Creepoid and Arches, as well as Grand Rapids, MI’s Shores and Richmond, VA’s the Diamond Center. Creepoid’s mix of dreamy psychedelic folk and aggressive grudge sounds have made them one of the most buzz-worthy bands in the city, and their live show does not disappoint. I have personally witnessed the aftermath of destruction left on stage by their intense live performance. On the other side of the dream pop psychedelic spectrum is Arches. The group’s sound has been compared to the vocal harmonies of the Beach Boys, and the lush orchestral arrangements of Grizzly Bear, but still remains rooted in guitar-based indie rock. The evening is hosted by Phonographic Arts (whose booking is currently run by Creepoid’s drummer Pat Troxell so get in touch if you are interested in performing at one of their showcases). Be sure to head on over to KFN for an intense musical journey. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N.
