Break It Up Show at KFN Cancelled

Posted on:

We were totally looking forward to seeing Break It Up’s debut performance tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, where they would’ve opened for London’s noise-pop trio Male Bonding. After all, the new trio features Wigwams guitarist Dan Morse and former Conversations with Enemies keyboardist Jen Sperling on dual guitars & vocals, so we know Break It Up would have been killer on stage today. But, alas, because of Hurricane Irene’s bucketing tour through the city, the show was cancelled, and it’s not the only one, either. Other cancelled Sunday gigs include World Café Live’s The HYPE’s (Almost) End of Summer Bash, the Rivers of Nihil/Snake Road/With Life In Mind show at the Barbary, and Making Time Forever (under) 21 with Far-Out Fangtooth. We know it’s bummer, so we leave you with Break It Up’s first single, “Excavate” – an infectious stripped down tune with post-riot-grrrl appeal.

And while we’re on the subject of Irene, it was no joke, even if it seemed like a letdown around some parts. Apartments above a Chinese food joint in North Philly collapsed, a large tree in the Northeast fell and crushed a car while in motion (the driver is thankfully OK), the Schuylkill River crested at record levels, flooding Lincoln Drive, and thousands of local residents lost power. As for the rest of the East Coast, in addition to flooding, road closures, and tornado touchdowns, Irene claimed 14 lives in six states. So we hope everyone is safe and hasn’t experience too much of Irene’s damage and devastation.

More Shows Cancelled/Postponed Due to Hurricane Irene

Posted on:

So it seems that messing up our weekend with torrential rains and ferocious winds isn’t enough for Hurricane Irene. No, the little-hurricane-that-could has also decided to screw with our sense of fun. Due to this crappy, I’m-over-it-already weather, more bands & venues have decided to cancel or reschedule gigs slated to go on tonight. Among the cancelled lot are The Dude Hates Cancer benefit show at Johnny Brenda’s (refunds available at point of purchase), the Buffalo Stance//Tia & Tamara show at PhilaMOCA, and Sugar Town with Lust2Love and Gina from The Gang Age at Tritone (good news though: West Philadelphia Orchestra moved tonight’s gig from Triumph to Tritone, so go forth and brave the nasty weather for some jamming). For a longer list of cancelled/postponed shows, check out The Swollen Fox HERE. And, again, we leave with some music to soothe your Irene-shattered heart.

Vice Magazine/Vitamin Water Uncapped Live Showcase To Be Rescheduled

Posted on:

Oh, Hurricane Irene, you’re just ruining everything this weekend. Sure, weekend workers get a break from the grind tomorrow if their only means of transportation is the always (un)reliable SEPTA (’cause, you know, it’s shutting down at 12:30 am Sunday). But the rest of us who wanted to party in the face of the impending storm now have one less place to get totally wasted. Due to the chaotic weather sure to head our way because of Hurricane Irene, VICE and vitaminwater have chosen to cancel today’s FREE Vice Magazine/vitaminwater Uncapped Live showcase at Sigman Sound Studios. From the VICE/vitaminwater camp:

"Due to concerns surrounding the weather this weekend with Hurricane Irene, VICE + vitaminwater have decided that its best and safest for all if we postpone Saturday’s Uncapped Philadelphia show. Don’t worry, we’re going to reschedule and we will let you know when we’ve locked in a new date. Stay safe this weekend and we will see you guys soon."

In the meantime, we’ll leave you with some tunes from show performers Reading Rainbowthe Homophones, and Cat Vet to jam to while you figure out how to make your weekend a little less boring. Enjoy!

The Dude is a man who abides upon simple pleasures – bowling, White Russians, and a carpet that really ties the rug together. But if there’s one thing he doesn’t abide by (other than nihilists and Walter’s shomer Shabbos rants) it’s CANCER. And that’s why The Dude Hates Cancer has produced its annual charity campaign of the Eastern Pennsylvania branch of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society since 2000. Its main focus may be bowling, but it also enjoys throwing concert parties for the good cause. The group will be setting the tone this year with a benefit concert at the M Room tonight, followed by the big blowout tomorrow night at Johnny Brenda’s. Tonight’s party kicks off with the smash mouth rock of the Gerunds (fronted by Dag Nasty’s Peter Cortner), the psychedelic post-punk of the Silence Kit, and the emotive lo-fi vibes of the Phoenix Veil. Our buddy Jenny Du “Gooder” will also raffle off a basket of goodies to raise some more cash for The Dude that includes a pair of tix to our Anniversary Bash on Friday, October 7 at Kung Fu Necktie (we’ll release more details about the rad bands performing soon). And tomorrow night’s show kicks into high gear with the experimental pop quartet Orbit to Leslie, led by Grimace Federation’s Chris Wood. Thrown in Raph Cutrufello’s Yer Bird Records-signed folk collective, Hezekiah Jones; TDHC mainstay, the Doublewides; and the soulful folk of Chris Kaspar, and cancer doesn’t stand a chance. M Room, 15 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+; Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+

OK, now Saturday is going to be a night of party-hopping because we really can’t resist the FREE Vice Magazine/Vitamin Water Uncapped Live showcase featuring psychedelic garage-pop trio Reading Rainbow with their badass riffs and gorgeous harmonies, the intoxicating baritone vocals and ingenious wordplay of the Homophones, and the grunge-y sonic blasts of Cat Vet. To top it off, it will be in the legendary Sigma Sound Studios where, as the Homophones pointed out, “Bowie did mountains of cocaine there and wrote songs with Luther Vandross!” Just RSVP HERE to reserve your spot. Sigma Sound Studios, 212 N. 12th St., 8pm, FREE w/RSVP, 21+

Brown Recluse Pleasantly Toxic at KFN Aug. 26

Posted on:

The Loxosceles reclusa species is one spider you may want to be bitten by after swaying and swooning to Brown Recluse’s headlining set at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Fueled by hypnotizing keys and soothing vox, with a merriment-pop vibe, the local natives and one of Philly’s unsung heroes in the indie music scene will infest your auditory perception with the most pleasant toxins. Joining Brown Recluse will be four-piece Arc In Round, led by producer extraordinaire Jeff Zeigler (Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, Pink Skull), reflecting a dark pop harvested with crisp vocals while painstakingly assembling a uniquely layered sound, and opening the evening will be the lyrical, new wave surf rockers Royal Shoals, featuring former members of the Ropers, Saturday People, Public Record, and Motor. Beanie Sigel Reps the Classics at The Blockley Aug. 26

Posted on:

Notorious Philly hip hop veteran, Beanie Sigel will be taking the stage tonight at The Blockley, alongside local up-and-comer Lynn Charles. Back in May, Sigel announced that he cancelled the production of his fifth studio album, originally titled The Closure, and would be retiring from the game. However, it was only a brief two weeks before he resigned with G-Unit Records and started working on his latest project, now boldly named The Classic. On July 13, Sigel released the album’s first single, “B-Boy Stance,” a tribute to classic hip hop over an old school drum machine beat with snippets of the various golden era songs he mentions throughout the track. So be sure to come out and celebrate the return of a local legend to hip hop and find out for yourself if the bold album title, The Classic, is warranted. The Blockley, 3801 Chestnut, $13-$15, 8:30 pm, 21+Dan Brightcliffe

Where Is My Mind?: Faux Slang

Posted on:

The members of Faux Slang have been kicking it around the Philly music scene for years now going in and out of numerous bands/projects with their lives intertwining at crossroads and separating on their individual journeys. But it seems longtime pals Adam Herndon, Rick Hass, Ian Nauroth, and Dan Verechia have found some common ground once again, which has evolved into their latest self-titled EP (that will be available on vinyl via RIPE Records, and you can read our review of it HERE). They’ll be celebrating the release of their new album this Saturday at Kung Fu Necktie with Nothing, Open Ocean, and deardarkhead so you should definitely swing by and grab a copy with its limited edition artwork. But first, check out our recent interview HERE to find out what it means to be Faux Slang.

New Track: “Without You (Sun Airway Remix)” – Junip

Posted on:

Below is a new remix that Sun Airway made for the song “Without You” by Junip (which is out via Mute Records). The track appears on the Swedish outfit’s EP alongside other remixes by Portugal. The Man and Warm Ghost. Also looks like you’ll be able to catch Sun Airway perform next in Philly for FREE with Work Drugs on Saturday, September 3 at Sigma Sound Studios for the 215 Magazine/Vitamin Water Uncapped Live showcase. Nice!

Here is what Sun Airway’s Jon Barthmus had to say about it:
I hadn’t heard the song until they approached me about a remix but I fell in love with the original. I tried to make the remix more of a collaboration and added some vocals of my own. Always nice to do a duet with someone without them knowing!
