Posted on:

What started out as a solo multi-instrumentalist mixtape project back in 2008 has since emerged into an ambitious explosion of dancehall, dub, hip-hop, and more. After extended recording sessions, Blayer Pointdujour and his Rockers Galore have been able to manifest the original demos into their debut EP Port Au Prince. They’ll be celebrate the release at PhilaMOCA tonight (originally scheduled at Bookspace) and are even hospitable enough to offer free drink & food before 11pm. Opening up the show will be The National Rifle who are still raising funds on Kickstarter before they step into Miner Street Studios for the recording of their first full-length album. Rounding out the lineup for the evening will be Adam & Dave’s Bloodline and Brooklyn’s Contramano. PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $10, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Fall Equinox Festival at Clark Park Sept. 17

Posted on:

Crossing over to fall can often be a somber moment. But fortunately the 41 year tradition of The Clark Park Fall Equinox Festival can deliver a suitable last hurrah. And this year’s event will be on the same day as the Uhruru Flea Market. There will also be plenty of vendors, food offerings, and even pirates. Conversations with Enemies will be on hand to preview music from their upcoming full length that is set to weave tales of pirates, werewolves, Satan, and more. Be prepared with some earplugs because it might get loud when grindcore dervish machines Total Fucking Destruction bombard the stage with jams from their latest album Hater. Recently back from tour, Algernon Cadwallader are poised to headline and perform tunes from their latest Parrot Files. The Tressels will be bringing their alcohol-infused rock, and might just preview songs from their upcoming EP American Sunset. Fine tuning their live performance with a recent summer tour, Catnaps will impress with their cuddlecore melodies. Pet Milk will be taking over the stage with their endearing indie noise pop. And Science Fair plan to kick it old school punk style. Toss in performances from Rock to the Future students, Big Wizard, Fuck Face, and Mike Bell and the Movies, and it looks like we’ll have plenty of entertainment for this beautiful fall day. Clark Park, 43rd & Chester Ave., 12pm, Free, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, September 16 – 18

We are quite interested to hear what Purples has been up to lately. If you didn’t know already, the band is made up of ex-Teeth members Peter MoDavis, Brian Ashby and Jonas Oesterle. They formed Purples and posted a handful of songs after The Teeth surprisingly disbanded due to Aaron MoDavis’ desire to pursue other non-music related opportunities. But there has been a long silence from Purples after the original tracks surfaced. The three remaining ex-Teeth members also supported Alec Ounsworth live on stage as part of his band Flashy Python. They’ll be joined this evening by three out of the four remaining members of Drink Up Buttercup who are now performing as White Birds, and also have their debut release on cassette coming out on September 23 via Grizzly Records. Also on the bill is Mike Quinn from And The Moneynotes. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+

“Everyone is born to fulfill some purpose or to contribute something to the universe.” Well, that’s the idea behind the band Bornto comprised of Patrick and Alyssa Regan. The brother/sister duo is still more of a bedroom/studio project, but they plan to release a new album Demons in November coinciding with a string of live performances ideally with visual artists/dancers. Bornto were recent winners of our Featured Artist(s) Poll so you can check out our interview with them HERE.

Dragon King Headlining an Early Show at KFN Sept. 16

Posted on:

What began as a studio project and exercise in collaboration between songwriter Dominic Angelella and producer Ritz Reynolds has blossomed into a live performing four-piece band. Dragon King will be headlining an early show tonight at Kung Fu Necktie performing their genre-hopping tunes driven by Angelella’s learned, dynamic guitar work and assisted by the bombastic bass lines of Ms. Julie Slick. They’ll be joined by good pals (and sibling) Eric Slick (a.k.a. Dr. Awkward) and Brendan Mulvihill (a.k.a. Keith Birthday) who have combined forces to make up freak folk outfit Norwegian Arms. Also on the bill are Saratoga/Brooklyn’s experimental popsters Railbird led by the lovely vocals and songwriting of Sarah K. Pedinotti. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7:30pm, $5, 21+ – Alexis V.

Below is the official music video for Sun Airway’s “White Palms,” the A-side to their latest single. Looks like it was shot in the First Unitarian Church, and you’ll have plenty of Jon Barthmus to go around for those ladies and gents who can’t get enough of him. The video was directed by Klip Collective’s Ricardo Rivera (who you might as well consider part of the band), and premiered earlier today via MTV Hive. (Photo by David Turcotte)

New Track: “undulate” – True Gold

Posted on:

Below is the track “undulate” from South Philly shoegaze-y psych rockers True Gold. It’s been out for about a couple of months now, but we’re going to label it a “new” track because it’s new to us, and we’ve been really enjoying it. True Gold will be releasing a split soon with another favorite of ours, Acid Kicks, via Phonographic Arts. We hope that this one will be on it. They’ll also be performing tonight at Kung Fu Necktie if you’d like to experience this track live. Enjoy!

Little Black Rainclouds Forecasted at Emoda Gallery Sept. 15

Tonight locals Little Black Rainclouds will be performing at Emoda Gallery. The band features members of Dangerous Ponies and Bonjour. Now, with influences from Dangerous Ponies in the mix, you can expect some adorably infectious jangly upbeat indie pop, and Little Black Rainclouds certainly delivers with song likes “Florida” and “Don’t Sleep in Brooklyn” providing a most enjoyable balance between their shade of grey lyrics and hints of hope instrumentation. They’ll be hosting Baltimore acts noise-psych two-piece Weekends (Friends Records) and Neutron Bomb as well as former Philly natives now Brooklynites Snakes Say Hisss (Famous Class Records).
