Nothing Venture Into the Void at The Barbary Nov. 6
Nothing will be coming to the Barbary tonight for an early show, which is brought to you by the DIY folks of The Dream Oven. Nothing’s latest EP, Suns and Lovers, is a mixture of gloomy post-punk and dreamy shoegaze soundscapes and features production from Kyle “Slick” Johnson (Wavves, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Creepoid) and Cold Cave’s Wesley Eisold. The band is also working on another new EP with Johnson at Fancy Time Studio. They’ll be joined by the dark synth sounds of local native Void Vision that should fit perfectly alongside Nothing’s moodiness creating a nice complement to a cold, bleak autumn Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Blockley’s Response to the LCB’s Raid and Fox News’ Coverage
Below is a response from The Blockley regarding the Liquor Control Board’s raid and Fox News’ coverage of it the other night. I really hope things work out for them because honestly, underage drinking is not that big of a deal to me (which is probably why I should never own a bar). It’s Philly. Don’t we have a lot more things to worry about? I’m a former underage drinker. I’m sure most of you did it too. (Ha…all the practice hopefully makes for a less annoying legal drinker.) I personally think that it’d be better to lower the drinking age and increase the driving age. I just hope that we don’t lose another music venue that supports local and touring original acts. The Blockley, as many may have heard by now, was raided by the Liquor Control Board last evening. This incident has made it to several news sources, blogs, etc., and the details that have been released are limited in scope and fail to even make mention of the bigger problem, fake IDs.
The Blockley sits between two college campuses. We host concerts five nights each week, often with nationally touring artists. Thursday night is the only night of the week that is geared towards a younger college crowd. We are keenly aware of the risk that underage students pose to bars, clubs and venues. Our policy is to scrupulously check identification for every person that walks through the door. The only acceptable forms of ID are a driver’s license or a passport, with no exceptions. This is our policy every single night, regardless of the show or the event. Our security guards who check IDs at the door are trained professionals and they are consistent in their performance. No one is allowed into the Blockley without a valid form of identification. Period.
A quick search of the internet will reveal major issues, nationwide, with regards to the sophistication and ease of acquiring fake identification cards, primarily from China. These IDs are sophisticated to the point where they even include a perfect hologram representation and scan properly. They are affordable, easy to obtain and nearly impossible to detect, even to a trained eye. In a recent study, it is estimated that 50% of underage college students have fake IDs. Every single person in the building last night had presented an acceptable ID at the door. We had over 500 patrons at the time of the raid and approximately 32 were found to have fake IDs. Prior to this, our security turned away more than 100 students attempting to enter with no ID or a detected fake ID.
Other bars within blocks were raided at the same time as The Blockley. However, Fox News and other outlets failed to report these incidents, instead focusing on only the Blockley. We invite Fox to attend tonight’s Tommy Conwell concert, or Tim Reynolds, Beth Hart, or any other nationally renowned artist that comes through on a weekly basis. We will let them decide whether or not we are doing our job properly instead of simply providing footage of bartenders being led away in handcuffs.
We do an excellent job checking identification at the door and will learn from this experience and hopefully get even better at detecting fake IDs. We are proud of the cooperation that we have shown, and will continue to show, at all times to the local police, University of Pennsylvania Police, and all other relevant authorities. It is unfortunate that in spite of our rigorous efforts to combat the rampant use of fake identification, we are still treated as the villain and face severe fines, temporary closing or even a revocation of our liquor license.

New Look and Material for Grimace Federation at Triumph Nov. 5
Grimace Federation will have a new look and new material this evening when they take their experiment in progress into Olde City at Triumph Brewing Company. No longer hauling the massive vibraphone around anymore, you’ll find the instrumental act moving forward as a trio with drums, bass, and Wes Schwartz putting down the electric guitar to play with his electronic toys. They currently don’t have any recordings of the new sound yet, but Schwartz describes it as “Flying Lotus meets Mogwai.” Sound interesting? I think so. All Ages Show w/Joe Jack Talcum & Dry Feet at Little Bar Nov. 5
Philly’s own Phonographic Arts is hosting a locals only, all ages matinee this afternoon featuring Joe Jack Talcum (Dead Milkmen), Dry Feet and 1994!. Joe Jack will be performing a solo acoustic set, which will definitely be a more intimate setting than when you might have last saw him on stage at Riot Fest. He’ll be joining forces with Dry Feet, who are made up of Perry Cola on guitar and vocals, Jay K. Shin on drums and Frizz B. on bass. The surf punk trio has a lot more in common with the Dead Milkmen beside their Philadelphia roots. Their beach-y sound and sarcastic lyrics are reminiscent of Milkmen classics like “Beach Party Vietnam,” “Beach Song,” and “Swordfish”. Weekend Warrior, November 4 – 6
Tonight is Mister Heavenly’s debut Philly performance, and I’ve been looking forward to it for a long time now. If you didn’t know already (then you probably really need to check out our site more often), the band is made up of madcap hometown son Honus Honus a.k.a. Ryan Kattner (Man Man), Nick Diamonds a.k.a. Nick Thorburn (Islands/Unicorns), and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse/The Shins). Yes, that’s quite a nice indie rock pedigree, but the band members didn’t just ride the wave of hype that comes attached with their other projects. Instead, the trio sculpted a fantastic album Out of Love (which was The Deli Philly’s August Album of the Month) as well as new genre that they have labeled “doom wop” (which is definitely fitting). They will be taking over the basement of the First Unitarian Church tonight, and Honus Honus has brought along Man Man bandmate Jamey Robinson and his project Buffalo Stance to help bring more wackiness to the momentous occasion as well as Brooklyn rockers Mr. Dream. FREE Shows in Support of Occupy Philly at City Hall This Weekend!
We just wanted to give everyone a heads up on a couple of FREE showcases that will be happening at City Hall in support of Occupy Philly. There will be a hip hop showcase happening around 5:30pm today with performances by Schoolly D, Kuf Knotz, LP Stiles, and Curly Castro. There will also be a showcase this Sunday with Circa Survive (also heard that it might just be Anthony Green), Fast Car, Crills Wilson, and The Externals scheduled to go from 12pm – 7pm. Come out and show your support for Occupy Philly and be treated to some FREE music (as it should be in our perfect world)!
