SOLD OUT Dr. Dog Show at KFN Nov. 22
If you were lucky enough to get a ticket for Dr. Dog’s performance tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, then congrats! The band will be dropping a new two-song 7” this week for Record Store Day’s celebration of Black Friday, and the canine crew also has a new full-length album entitled Be the Void coming out on February 7 so I’m guessing that we’ll be getting a sneak preview of the upcoming releases. Expect KFN to be bursting at the seams this evening! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
New Track: “Downbound Train” (Springsteen Cover) – Kurt Vile
Below is a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Downbound Train” by Kurt Vile. It’s from Springsteen’s album Born in the U.S.A., and appears on Vile’s recent EP So Outta Reach. Now, this one is perfect for those who have nothing to do but get blazed and drink beers on a Monday so crank it up! You are truly the lucky few.
New Music Video: “100” – Dice Raw
Artillery – check. Drugs – check. Booty-shaking dancers – check. Someone making it rain – check. Boastful rhymes – check. Haha…yup, it’s official. We have a new rap video from Dice Raw for “100” from the first EP of his trilogy The Greatest Rapper Never: Preservation. It’s a hot jam (lovin’ the keys/synths in it). This one is for the suits/9-to-5ers trapped at work on this gloomy Monday. It was directed by Spike Jordan, and produced by Drew Kramer. Enjoy!
Rock to the Future Benefit w/Everyone Everywhere & More at Crystal Palace Nov. 19
When they are not hosting radio shows on WKDU or biking across the country, the lads in Everyone Everywhere play emo tinged indie rock that often highlight their sarcastic wit and addictive melodies. The band is not all loud/soft, but they do use the dynamic well, and pull both off with ease. When singer/guitarist Brendan McHugh sings, “I can’t wake up without a shower/I’m hardly awake for the entire day/ Mostly asleep, barely awake still dry, still dirty,” there is something that seems deeper and bigger than the pretty mundane image of showering, and there may or may not be, but it doesn’t matter, because it works. Their latest release – last years eponymously titled album has yet to get old, but fans are probably itching for some new tracks. The bill is filled out with Rob, Lately, Glocca Morra, Polar Ice Caps, and Coastal. The whole thing is a Rock to the Future benefit and will support the rad after school program and will help to allow them to continue breeding Philadelphia’s next generation of rock stars. Crystal Palace, (Please check out HERE for deets.), 7pm, $5 – $7, All Ages – Adam G.
Purling Hiss Ready to Lay It Down at JB’s Nov. 19
Weekend Warrior, November 18 – 20
Coruscate at the Meadow Gate, The Sisters3‘s newest album on Modern Vintage, is a kaleidoscope of fantastical folk. From the sweet blasts and whimsical struts of "Chinatown" to the piano intricacies and layered harmonies of "Waiting," the album invokes images of sprawling meadows set against a bright, technicolor sky fading gently into a fiery sunset. But this local trio of sisters is more than Coruscate suggests. Live, they’re absolutely electrifying, and their talent shines beyond what a mere recording can pick up. You can witness this elevation of sound on Sunday at Kung Fu Necktie for our Deli-presented show, which also features local alt-folk act Wendish, Ally Leedy‘s (of Lion Versus) solo project with songwriter/author Luke Bartolomeo (look out for their upcoming EP, which they are currently working on). For extra flavor, the bill is rounded out by New York’s quixotic chanteuse Cat Martino and Brooklyn’s the Loom, whose debut full-length Teeth, released earlier this month on Crossbill Records, is a ten-track epic of chasing, brazen folk that could possibly be the soundtrack to America’s brutal western expansion–in other words, a haunting sweep of lingering melodies. If nothing else, this is a show you don’t want to miss! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ (Phot by Lisa Schaffer) – Annamarya Scaccia
