New Track: “The Great Sleep” (Live) – Acid Kicks
Local dream punks Acid Kicks (who actually weave more nightmarish soundscapes) just released a new album Live from Silk City on January 11th, 2012. It contains a couple tracks from their Life Dreams 7” as well as a few new ones that you might find on their upcoming split 12” with True Gold due out later this year via Phonographic Arts. Acid Kicks have been looking for permanent drummer to replace Alex Zilinski since he moved last year to New Orleans to join touring with Dead People. Conversation with Enemies Opening for Allison Weiss at PhilaMOCA Jan. 15
This winter has certainly been having a bit of an identity crisis. One day it’s an oddly beautiful spring day, and the next you are bundled up like the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man. Well, with a band like Conversations with Enemies laying down their groovy, bouncy rhythms, surf rock riffs, and joyous horn section, you might be transported to those lost summer days with your best pals and not a care in the world. Pissed Jeans & Blues Control at JB’s Jan. 14
Philadelphia by way of Allentown noise assassins Pissed Jeans are bringing their brand of heavy/hardcore punk in the vein of SST record’s 80’s roster to Johnny Brenda’s tonight, alongside local badass avant-garde duo Blues Control, who recently collaborated with zitherist/composer Laraaji for a mind-bending installment of RVNG Intl.’s FRKWYS series. Pissed Jeans latest release 2009’s King of Jeans, a diss to the wave of similarly named and sounding bands that has sprung up from the underground in the wake of the group’s breakthrough album, Hope for Men (cough White Denim cough). The group’s discography for Sub Pop is full of volatile, head-banging worthy noise-punk and Black Sabbath-inspired riffs that would fit perfectly in any record collection next to Black Flag’s My War. Negative Department Bringing Positive Vibes at The Level Room Jan. 14
Untz untz untz. A DJ named Sam Kennerly asked a kid with an asymmetrical haircut (Mitch Routman) to play bass, and Philly’s Negative Department was born. The duo’s intoxicating electro sequences are upbeat and fun, and with tracks like “Jersey Girls,” surely restoring any Jersey girl’s reputation after the run of MTV’s fist-pumping Jersey Shore. According to the band, a new song is in store for tonight’s show, and was described as “a big ridiculous dance anthem, sort of like Calvin Harris or the new Erasure album.” You’ve been warned. The duo’s bleep-bloopy-untzy electrical sound will be bedeck The Level Room tonight as they open for the mixed surf rock/grunge/pop tones of Philly’s Sure Juror. Joining the bill will also be Massachusetts’s indie-billy rockers Pray for Polanski and New Jersey’s alternative shoegazers The Only Ghost In Town. Archer Spade Kickstarting the New Year at The Rotunda Jan. 14
As Archer Spade, Daniel Blacksberg and Nick Millevoi twist their contemporary classical repertoire into avant-garde doctrines of minimalists rhythms and ethereal space noise. It’s rough in the best way – an always-unwinding tape of eccentric textural experiments and idiosyncratic art-house overtures that seem to manifest right in the moment. But it seems apposite of these visionary local composer/performers who, while only a year old as Archer Spade, have more than a decade of experience as both collaborators and individual artists. Weekend Warrior, January 13 – 15
Phonographic Arts are hosting a local’s only show full of gothic/post-punk influenced psychedelic noise this Sunday night at their new home and a new favorite hangout of ours, The Level Room. Starting the night off will be dark/bluesy punks Latern, followed by the noisy psych rock of Harsh Vibes. Headlining the night’s bill will be the psychedelic post-punk of Far-Out Fangtooth, who had a break out year in 2011 on the heels of their well-received debut LP, Pure & Disinterested via Siltbreeze. The record found the group expanding their sound from their early days of Cramps-esque garage punk, to the aforementioned gothic/psychedelic post punk. Far-Out Fangtooth also have a new 7” coming out in the near future via HoZac Records. I know that it is on Sunday, but don’t sleep on this show! Free Energy have been pretty quiet lately while they work on their sophomore album with producer John Agnello. However, lead vocalist Paul Sprangers recently collaborated with long-time pal Ian Anderson from One for the Team, who has a new 7” coming out under the moniker Dream Brother via his own label Afternoon Records. Check out their most enjoyable new track “Haunted Heart” below. Permanent Wave Philly Presenting a Girls Rock Philly Benefit Show at Cha-Cha’Razzi Jan. 13
Permanent Wave Philly is having a benefit show for Girls Rock Philly, a much-beloved local volunteer-based non-profit music and mentoring organization dedicated to empowering girls and young women, tonight at South Philly’s Cha-Cha’Razzi with Trophy Wife, Very Happy, Nona, Carmen, and The Adults. Permanent Wave Philly is a branch of the original New York City-based Permanent Wave (which was started by former Titus Andronicus member Amy Klein). It is a network and community of feminist artists and activists who seek to challenge gender inequality not only in all forms of the arts, but also in politics, personal lives, and anywhere else it seems necessary. The organization believes that women should see each other as collaborators and inspirations, not rivals. It aspires to disprove the belief that “feminism is dead” and continue what was started generations ago by creating and strengthening a revolutionary arts movement and community that’s relevant to women, queer, and trans people. Mountjoy EP Release Show at PhilaMOCA Jan. 13
Mountjoy are kicking off 2012 right with an EP release show at PhilaMOCA tonight. The alt rock quartet will be sharing their new EP Squam Lake Tapes. And to celebrate, the band is giving out free copies to all who attend and will be debuting some new tunes as well.
