Tonight 8static will be hosting their second show at PhilaMOCA, with another impressive bill of 8-bit and electronic artists. For those of you who don’t know, 8static is a chip music event that takes place on the second Saturday of each month and features performances by artists from around the world. This month’s lineup features the bass heavy dance grooves and Nanoloops of Disassembler (Honduras), the metal-influenced chip music of Shawnphase (Baltimore) and the ambient soundscapes of Trash80. Visual artist, Visualicious, will be providing the backdrop for this evening’s soundtrack with her unique take on digital art. In addition to the killer lineup, Dino Lionetti of Philly’s own Cheap Dinosaurs is holding a workshop class before the show teaching concert-goers how to compose their own 8-bit tunes in odd time signatures. You can showoff what you’ve learned throughout the evening at the open mic session immediately following tonight’s show. PhilaMOCA, 531 North 12th St., 7pm, $7-10, All Ages – Dan Brightcliffe
Early All Ages Rock to the Future Benefit at KFN April 14
Rock to the Future has an exciting fundraising event lined up today as it hosts its 1st Annual Race and Rock Scavenger Hunt today. The event kicks off at their home base in the afternoon, and gives teams the opportunity to race across Fishtown for the chance to win concert and sports tickets, bike gear, gift cards to several local businesses and other prizes. There will also be a raffle. Murph’s Bar will be donating 10% of the sales that they make after 6pm to the organization, and Cloud Entertainment will be hosting a music-filled after-party at Kung Fu Necktie. Cheers Elephant will be on hand to showcase tunes from their latest LP Like Wind Blows Fire, which features the song "Doin’ It Right" that the band recently cut a new music video for. Conversations with Enemies will be there to showcase ditties from their upcoming pirate and devil concept album that you still have a chance to help name. Vintage Kicks also might just preview some surf-dance-punk-fueled tunes from their new EP that they’ve been recording, and Plumes will offer up a refreshing blast of their spacegaze melodies. FYI on DIYs in PHL: Data Garden
Data Garden is an online journal and record label encouraging the discovery of electronic music through the windows of history, science and community. When we intially heard about the collaborative being invited by Megawords (who are running a library and exhibition in conjunction with the photography exhibit of Zoe Strauss: Ten Years) to present a project that would have tropical plants hooked up to specialized electronic sensors to make music, our interest was piqued. Their Data Garden: Quartet installation will be open to the public this weekend (April 13 – 15) at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It will be “the first bio-reactive and plant controlled work of art at The PMA.” Now, you are probably wondering: What does this mean? Well, rather than cutting and pasting their nicely chosen words from the post on the Data Garden website to try to superficially explain, we decided to hit up masterminds Joe Patitucci (a.k.a. Tadoma), Sam Cusumano and Alex Tyson to find out what the Data Garden: Quartet is all about. And we were right! It is pretty damn interesting so now we are really looking forward to seeing it in action this weekend, and we think that you should definitely join us. But first, we suggest that you get a little more enlightened about the installation as well, and check out our interview with the Data Garden crew HERE.

The video features their new track “Tell the Teller,” and is a promo for their show on Saturday, June 16th at World Café Live, which will have “a bunch of special guest performers, an exclusive single to be released at the show, and they will be using the show proceeds to kickstart funding into a new touring vehicle and finishing their new full-length record they started working on earlier this year with Philly record-making mastermind, Bill Moriarty.” It was filmed and edited by Seth Klinger.

Dangerous Ponies Homecoming at PhilaMOCA April 12
The colorful crew of Dangerous Ponies has been on the road for their spring tour spreading some serious good vibes – I’m sure. Well, tonight will be their homecoming at what seems to be one of their favorite venues in Philly these days, PhilaMOCA. I’m expecting a tight, high-energy set with plenty of friends and fans ready to get loose and party down. DRGN King will certainly lend a helpful hand in getting the crowd pumped up. They will also be playing hosts to NYC’s Lara Stevenson & the Cans and Piscataway’s Green Paper. The old Mad Decent mausoleum is about to get pretty lively this evening!
